Does anybody out there who has a DV think it's a little porky? After weighing everything in the box mine is at 11 lbs. I think I'm going to have a finnished weight of around 18 lbs. Is the DA 50 up to hovering an 18 lb plane or should I be looking at getting a ZDZ 60 or even a 3W 70?
I'm just wondering what you other DV owners are thinking.
Cheers,
Wiz

Kitman, are you saying that Chip's plane on the video was 17 lb? The one he advertised as being 13.5-15?
Guess I'm lucky. the stuff in my box "only" weighed 10.25 lb so I should come out at 16.8.

Oh well, it's too heavy for me to convert to electric power like I had hoped to do. I guess I can always follow the crowd and stick a DA 50 in it. Or maybe there is sombody who lives in SE Michigan that wants it and we could get together.

I do not know what Chips plane weighed, I was referencing your "out of box" weight. The DA has all the power need to pull it.
Wiz, What were you going to use to make it electric??

Well, I had hoped to keep it in the 2000 watt range and use a single Hacker C50 Acro 14XL with a 10S4P Thunder Power LiPoly battery pack. This is basically the same power system that Jason Shulman uses in his pattern planes.
However, with the additional weight it looks more like a 3000 watt system would be needed. That would be a pair of Hacker C50 14XLs in an InnerDemon drive with 4x4S4P Thunder Power packs. That's 8 lbs of batteries and 4 pounds of motor.....and pretty pricy too. I'd go the extra money for the 3Kw system if I thought the plane itself would fly well at 22-23 lbs, but I really don't think it will.
Now if my DV was 2-3 lbs lighter as advertised I could justify the expense of the electric power system since the plane would preform well at that weight. But at 23lbs it's hard to justify an expensive power system when the performance will be marginal.
I dunno...... I could probably spend a bunch of money on CF parts and look to using lighter servos and such to get the weight down. Also, for comparison purposes I could look at what the take off weight of the gasser would be with a full tank and maybe get some numbers that make me feel comfortable.
Right now, I'm feeling a little betrayed by the MFG and their weight range numbers.

Greg, I just realized that I will not be able to mount the fuel tank under the canopy hatch -- the fuel tank is too big. I need a new idea with some pics. I wish the plane had a real floor then I could bolt it to the floor. That' s what I do with all my pattern planes.

Your plane is finished and only weighs 14.6 lbs? I wonder why yours is so much lighter than mine? Lucky you..........

OK,
Just for you rgreen24, I crawled into my Hanger G (G for Garage), an' snapped a picture the tank.
You can't see much but the ply plate is positioned almost on top of the wing tube to a cross-bar on the former that is more forward. Foam is 3M-77 glued to bottom of tank. The tank is held in place with Velcro cable-straps.
Uses the same plate for the throttle servo.
With a DA50, a Slimline muffler and a 4000 mAh li-ion and JR digitals all round the final weight was 17lb 1 oz.
All I need now is some spring weather....

Gee Eric.....ya got one or two models there.
17 Lbs isn't the end of the world, but isn't that pressing the ability of the DA 50 to hover it? Having never owned a DA 50 I don't really know. I've been tossing around the idea of getting a ZDZ 60 to handle the couple extra lbs, but if I don't need it??? What do you think?
Thanks,
Wiz

i have had my brison 3.2 on 17 lbs plane and it will hover with ease so i can tell you that DA 50 is stronger than any of the 50CC i know off Brison site claims unlimted verticle on a Brison 3.2 up to 18 lbs. So the DA 50 should still be cool it just wow that the plane looks to be very heavy like the DP extra started off saying....

DV weight
Chips planes are no different than the ones we just shipped, the differences are the weights will very a little and there is NO WAY to accuratly predict the weight of the plane by weighing pieces. Chips hovers his plane with plenty extra power on a DA50 at 5500 feet alt. on a 90 degree day. I know as I saw it and videod
it last Saturday in Sierra Vista. I have been in this business for 14 years and have never understood peoples obsession with weighing parts, yes or course weight is a very important factor but it does little to predict an accurate all up weight. And then weigh a plane all up on 3 different scale with 3 different people holding it and I will show you 3 different weights.
Bottom line the planes weight is fine! Us light equipment where you can. Batteries, servos ect. Put the equipment where we say to. And you will have a great flying plane!
My opinion( for what it is worth is- time spent practicing is will make your plane fly better than time spent weighing and speculating.)
Build it, fly it, you will love it!

Don,
I tend to agree with what you have said. In this case, I was hoping to make an electric conversion of it and that is why I was dissapointed with the weight of the bare kit. After weighing all the pieces (a necessary task for choosing the proper electric power system) I knew the conversion would be a marginal performer.
Anyway, I went ahead and ordered a DA 50 for mine. I just got off the phone with the nice people there at Desert Aircraft.
After pulling it out of the box again and looking at how pretty it is I couldn't help but get excited about it. I'm looking forward to finnishing it off and flying it.
I'll be sure to post my impressions of it here on RCU.
Thanks,
Mike Wizynajtys
