Mixmaster...Yeah, this is the best forum. We discuss almost anything here. And, usually there's no fighting. I like that. And it's nice to see the planes others are flying and I like to post some of my "other" thoughts among friends. Great forum.
I've also done tail touches...not that big of a deal really. The only difference...Mine you don't recover from. Or maybe you have to recover?!?!? I don't know.
Rclement...
Now a Giant. That looks just like mine. Except I don't have pants...or a straw hat.
Thanks
Barry

Found it! Here's a great deal CJPOSADA,
http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Detail.asp?ID=200303297
If you buy before Sept. 30th you get an extra $10 in stuff or a $5 cash rebate from Futaba. Such a bargain!
Will that be VISA, Amex or Discover??

gjeffers...Congratulations on that new grand baby. That is joyful. Also, welcome back to the short week. Hope you get a lot of flying in. You deserve it.

Haven't posted in a while, hope everyone is enjoying their summer and getting a lot of flight time. I have been pretty busy but have been able to get in some time most saturdays.
I have a little problem with my Magnum 91 that I hope you can give me some advice on.
I have had the Engine running now for about a year on my UCD. It hasnt seen a lot of air time since I can only fly on weekends and our season isnt very long here. I follow the manual for just about everything, break-in, setting my high and low idle. The motor has run great for me until last weekend when it decided not to turn off anymore. I rechecked my throws, throttle arm and carburator to make sure everything checked out. My carb closes all the way. This week same problem. It actually speeds up when I close the throttle all the way. I cant even get it to idle low.
Even with the carb closed all the way I am getting air in there somehow. I plan on taking the engine off for a better inspection. I figured I would collect as many thoughts as possible about what to check and try while I am troubleshooting the problem. This is my first 4S so any help would be appreciated.

i think your right on crash about the air, probably a o-ring getting a little stale sitting around alot, but you are getting air leaking by somewhere.
im having the same prob as you till this weekend as far as extra time to fly, but i have a few days off to play around now
good to hear from ya

Hello all, I have been gone for three days on a canoe trip with my son and our Boy Scout Troop 84. (I am the Assistant Scoutmaster) We had a real blast and everyone came home in one piece! The faces were a bit redder than before but the smiles said it all. They all know that I am a RC'er and I am getting some pretty healthy evidence that a few of our boys are wanting to experience the world of RC flight! I may have to build my vintage Windrifter or the Sig Riser and let them ease into flying. I would do it with my electric stuff but it is a bit more touchy to fly than these lovely gliders. I'd love to see even one of these kids enter into this hobby.
I have some updates for the UCD forum.
First off, my hat's off to you Gary! I'm sure you're thrilled with the Grandson! I would about pop if I was in your shoes. My son is almost 12, (I'm almost 47) and the thought of him bringing me a grandchild is almost too far away to comprehend, so I really can't imagine what it must feel like! Great news though, I know you've been looking forward to this for some time.
OK, here's the "deal" on the Saito FA-82A, as I said Chief wants $239 and $7.95 S/H. Hobby Warehouse in Richmond Minn. has it for $229 and $7 S/H. That's a win/win in my book! Thanks Barry for the scoop on Chief as they look like a great outfit, but they are still just over $10 more all together. If the seller handled the warranty work then I would most likely go with Chief, however since it is handled by Saito, I will go for the savings. (that plus I always try to give my money to the smaller "mom and pop" businesses before the bigger boys) Thanks Rob, (rtn9105), for telling me about your LHS, Hobby Warehouse, they didn't answer my e-mail but when I called, they were as helpful as they could be. Either way, it beats the heck out of the $254.99 Horizon wants!
Also, to THE_KNACK, (is this in honor of the band?) glad you got the word on the U-Can-Do deal at Wholesaletrains.com. I tried to look back to see who it was that turned me on to them and was unable to find it. Someone here on this forum told me, so, I am glad that my passing that along has helped to create two new UCD owners (and hopefully, two new RCUniverse, UCD.46 forum residents! The more the merrier! Welcome to the world of U-Can-Do!
That should do for now, I am back to the scouting thing as we have a patrol meeting in 1/2 an hour and my boy is lined up for his Court of Honor to recieve his first rank completion since starting with the Boy Scouts (he got his Arrow of Light from completing every level in Cub Scouts in March)!! I'm off to do my duty.
Bye for now,

It's actually a Dilbert thing from one of the TV episodes. I've been working on computers for 18 years now. Thanks again and I'll be checking back here from time to time. Fly safe guys.

sctcrash... My Carb. rotor/barrel stop screw came lose once on my Mag 91, Not
sure what if any problem it caused, except for the barrel falling out[
].. Luckily
it did it as I put the plane on the table, So nothing got lost..., You may also want
to check both your needle/seat.. It could be worn, depending......
Well, just made some checks and small repairs to the "Do"... I had to C.A. the
stringer<??> turtleback... I broke the top one in a couple places picking the plane
up[:@]... Well, a fellow member did it as he asked too carry the plane to the runway
as I was ready to fly...( He still asks to carry the plane out, But I say no now stating
I have to stick to my routine, As the rag in my back pocket to prevent problems)
Also found my belly pan coming lose at the wing bolt end hoping that was my added
harmonics, will find out in the AM... Ohh, yeah I also had to repair the Lt. elevator
leading edge end... Last time out I did a touch and go, and I pulled into a hover at
lift-off.... But I still had it on high rates.... She stood up fast, surprizing it did not tear
it off
It's been a bit since I took her out, but I have to give the other a rest....
Hope the Grandkids will let me fly

Welcome back sctcrash. It's been a while. Gee whiz.
Well, I have some cool news too. Well not as exciting as a grandson but it's at least on the top ten list.... I went to a new flying field (new to me anyway) and one of the guys I know let me fly as a guest. It was a great evening of flying and chat and I've decided to join their club and fly there. It's a nice place, nicer than I thought it would be and the guys seem nice. I got to re-maiden the Mayhem and it flew very, very good. What an awesome plane. That's the biggest plane I've ever flown and that was a thrill.
I found out this morning that the state park where I was flying (that was shut down due to flying violations) is now shut down due to vandilism. Apparently some kids cut some trails into the park to set up a band and left all kinds of garbage and mess so the park is going to be shut down for a while, while they figure out what to do. Yikes! Heathens and idiots are everywhere. [X(]

Anyone tried a OS65LA on one of these? I have one, that purrs like a kitten, laying around and need to use it on something. No 3D for me, just loops, rolls and some mild stuff. Also, will standard servo's work or do I need something stronger?
One other thing. I have a new GMS 76 still in the box and wonder if that might be a possibility?

Good to see you all havent forgotten me.
The gasket between my Intake and my Head was bad. I am going to try some Gasket sillicone I got from the Auto store. I will order a gasket if this doesnt work, but no point spending $5 on shipping for a $1.50 part. I will get it next time I order something.
Recently inspired by the description of the Blender in this months MAN, i have been Blender crazy the last couple of times I have gotten out. Its probably the easiest trick I have on the UCD right now.

So, what building tips do you recommend for the UCD? So far I have read up to page 100 of this thread and thougt that I would just cut to the chase...
I plan on doing the metal-rod-through-the-landing-block trick but I was wondering if I needed to do anythign else. I plan to use the OS .46AX to get started and then install a Saito 82 after I save some money.
I appreciate any help that you guys could provide.
Thanks,
Mark

Danny,
Congrats on the baby's arrival! I'm excited for you. Isn't it even bigger than you thought? Especially in the chord and airfoil thickness! And it's so long. Make sure you ask about all the improvements that can be made, some that should be made and a couple that almost have to be made! I had mine for over two years before I started working on it. I was new and realised that I had to ease into the sport and so did other things to get stick time. I've been flying electric for some time lately. (UCD EP, the "baby brother" of the U-Can-Do line) I am almost spoiled! 20 minutes per charge and no fuel/mess or starting issues. I do however look forward to smell of the fuel and oil in the morning again! In the last couple of months however I found this forum and wass blown away with the tone. Very helpful and an actual pleasure to pop in and see what's on the post now and then!. I owe it to the guys that have been sharing it with me, to pass along some hints about the build and the plane itself. And I would hope and expect that they would pop in and fill in where it's needed here. All you need do is ask ask more than one person is likely to help you out with-in 24 hours!
As for your motor choices, and I am only echoing the masters here as I wait to finish my baby, anything at or above a .46 AX with a 2 stroke, and at or above a .70 for the four strokes is sufficient for easy"fun" flying. And yes, your standard servos will work but at a cost in several factors, speed, torque and centering among them. The rudder needs your best servo. The control surfaces are just so darned big that a lot of force will be spent on moving them and holding them in one place. Fly with what you've got and you'll likely have a great time lazily flying around, but don't go speeding it around or you may find some controls not responding on a permanent basis! And I also have heard that it is almost a must to reinforce the landing gear section of the fuse. Also be careful of the turtledeck as it is only soft balsa stringers and not sheeted so a thumb can easily break it in. Build it straight and balance her out good and it should serve you well.
Hey guys! My Saito FA-82A is officially on it's way!! I went with Hobby Warehouse in Richmond, Minn. for $229 and $7 S/H. I should see it early next week! I can't wait. I am not sure what FS fuel we have around here though and really don't know what to go with since this is my first 4 stroke. What are you guys burning in these motors? And what glow plug do you like? I have a wonderful test stand and will be lovingly breaking it in for a while with a big grin on my face!
That should cover it, except that I have a cartoon for you guys that haven't already seen it. I got a kick out of.
Bye now,
Bliss

Blisster...Great cartoon. And true.
I use 30% Cool Power. I like the extra power but the best difference is transition and idle. Most don't recommend four stroke fuel....Odd. But 20/20 is popular. Main thing is to get to 20% oil content. That's the most important thing. The Cool Power is 22% oil and 30% nitro. Oh yeah...Heli Blend. Almost all of your heli blends have over 20% oil.
Sctcrash...
Blenders are my most fun maneuver also. I especially like the blender into a flat spin landing. Cool.
If you "Do" it just right you can do a rising flat spin. That is the Ultimate. Only a very few planes will even do that. The old standard UCD that everybody complains about is one of them. Cool.
Thanks
Barry

Bliss, i use omega 15%, a little castor dont hurt, just not all castor, they will pretty much run on most fuel like Barry said, just need at least 17% oil and as far as the plug i have found no difference between the saito super plug(stock plug) or the os type "F" , both are great

Rob,
Yep, it is quite large for a 40 size plane but I'm impressed with the quality, especially the covering. Only a small wrinkle on the horizontal stab. I'll beef up the gear mount like you recommended and if you, or anyone else, think of any other mods please let me know. I probably won't start on it for a couple of weeks. What about these recessed wing bolts? Anything I can do with them? I hear they are a real pain.
BTW, congrats on ordering the Saito. A friend has a UCD with a Saito 91 and I get to fly it sometimes. You will be impressed. They have such a sweet sound. Wish I could afford one! Just keep a close watch on the fuel. Until it's broken in it will suck up some juice. An 8 minute flight leaves this one bone dry!
Thanks for all your help on this.

Barry, I have gotten it to rise once, i can get it to stay still for a few revs, but it usually falls out. I think its just a matter of me training my thumbs and finding the right mix.
And I even had a Flat spin landing this past saturday. I tried to pull out of it and it didnt respond very well. Luckily i managed to keep it flat when it went into soft weeds. When i got to the plane one of the aileron control rods had popped out. Its the only place i use the connection that came with the plane, but it has lasted a year without incident. I had a spare clip so i put it back together, topped off the tank and went back up. At the end of the day i did notice i crunched a few ribs of the turtle deck and split my LG block.
Which brings me to those of you starting with new UCDs. Definetely reinforce the Landing Gear block, upgrade your control rods or they will bend. Be sure to have a good setup for your control connections (servo and control surface). I have now had a bad conneciton cause a meeting with a tree and one with the ground.
I started with a 46 AX and it was good enough to have a lot of fun with the plane. I could hover at about 3/4 if i remember correctly. I used a 12.25 x 3.75 with that motor to my satisfaction. But I just had to put in more power and went with a Magnum 91 and I love it. I use an OS F glow plug and am limited in fuel to whatever 15% i can find at the local shops. I had to visit 3 last week to find some. Although i did almost try the 30% Heli fuel.
Been in a tree, split in half, flat spin landing, a bunch of hard landings and assorted misshaps and I am still on my first UCD, and it is still an awesome plane.
Is there any length limit on these posts or should i keep going.

I probably won't start on it for a couple of weeks. What about these recessed wing bolts? Anything I can do with them? I hear they are a real pain.

Great cartoon Bliss!!.... I use Power Master 20/20.. But, thinking of switching to
15%, and using 20/20 in the YS's only. I ran 15% yesterday in the "Do" S-82
notice a little difference in idle/trans, But it worked great... I have tried most
4c plugs.... I only use OS "F" now....
ForeverHero... Seems like the build info is covered good.. I would add, be extra careful
when removing the Hori. Stab covering that'll be epoxied to the fuse so as to "not" score
the bulsa beneath, but that's really for all planes, maybe a bit more so for the "Do"...
Rob... Congrads on the new club!!
The "Do" flew Great!!!... It's back to it's normal harmonics:-)))).... It's "HOT" here
