BradSD... As said above, if not get more air in there... Looks Great!!
Man... Sure would like to get that Great Deal... But barry has also got me thinkng about
Cap and gas......... Wish that was on sale
)
38 it should be fun... I try other peeps planes, but a lot of the fun is restricted [&o]
Had a Great day yesterday, The "Do" Fun-task-tic... Loads of fun, and everyone knows I'm
up since it's so noisy. Had so much fun, that I had another dead stick[:@]... No more fuel,
But luckily I was on my approach and just going over the fence

Did have a few mishaps by members[:@]... My flying buddy with the X-100, did a perfect 1'
high HA KE down the runway (3 flt) on the third one not so good, he he went in, not bad
damage, but it did break the C.F. gear and a few holes in the covering here and there[:@]

I took the UCD up for the first time this week. It was awesome. It is so much easier to fly than the trainer I learned on. The landings were very slow and smooth. I tried to keep it pretty low keyed for those first few flights. Unfortunately I stayed in the throttle too much at one point resulting in flutter. It broke the horizontal stabilizer on both sides. I was luckky that it held together long enough for me to get it down. A little thin CA later and it was up in the air again. I may just have to build another stab.
One question. My .46 AX is not strong enough to pull out of a hover. It will hold it pretty well, but if it gets out of wack I don't have enough to bring it back. It will stall and fall out. What is a budget engine/ prop combo that will pull it out? I am at 1100 feet here. I was looking at the new .55 AX, but at 2.0hp I am not sure if it will pull it out of a hover.
Thanks,

Great job on the pics Hero. Very nice! [8D] Where did you get the muffler for it? What brand is the remote glow?
It all looks like a pretty good set up. I'm jealous.........[&o]

foreverHero...Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. From the pictrues it almost looks like the engine is upside down. Must be the camera angle...
Thanks

Thanks guys... Rob, the muffler is new from Slimeline, it's the new Inverted 4-Stroke Muffler and the glow remote is from Revolution. it's actually design for helicopters but was perfect in that it has a rubber boot that locks onto the plug and the metal bracket comes with it. I just had to run a ground wire from the metal bracket to the motor bolts and it works great . I like it over the regular ones from Du-Bro and Sullivan as it was short, simple to install and doesn't 'pop' off like the others.
Barry, the engine is indeed installed inverted ... I almost installed it right-side up but noticed that in the instructions they show it right-side up but when I looked at the mounting pic closer the landing gear is actually at the top of the picture. So I just installed it upside-down and put the Pitts muffler on it and it flies great but I'm still dialing it in with the help of the fellas at the field.
BTW, I love flying this thing and I am so far able to perform a Hover, Knife-Edges and the Begginner IMAC pattern (still needs practice); got my 20th flight on it this weekend so I'm happy.
Cheers,
Mark

Good job Mark. That's very cool indeed......[8D] I may have to look into the Revolution remote. I had two different types before and they kept breaking or coming off...[:@]

Hey guys,
Does anyone have any comments (guesstimates) on the .55 AX ability to pull out of a hover. I don't want to drop $250 bucks on a 4 stroke. Just looking for a relatively inexpensive power plant that will pull the plane in a vertical. I am at 1100 feet here if that factors in to your ciphering.
Thanks

Looks Great Hero........ Man, On the engine... I thought the plane was upside down...
jtairney... Is that the OS 50 sx?? .. I'm not really sure... .55 AX?? , But I would say
the 50sx would be marginal at best..... But that's just my "I don't have one.. opinion"
Ahh.. I see... as you said, "New".... @ 2 hp.... it maybe enough???

kostas1...Futaba 9CAP Super. That's the radio that will allow the two elevator programing. Anything less has to be tricked to make it work.
thanks

I setup my OS 91 FX upright, but maybe the carb is a bit higher than the center of the tank.
What about your setup?
Barry,
the 9CAP is way too expensive for me right now.
What about a Futaba servo reverser or a dual servo reverser?
I want to maiden this monster
but without elev.......

jtairney,
2 stroke engines produce, in general, about 1.2 lbs thrust per cubic inch displacement. 4 strokes about 1.1. Your UCD 46 weighs about 6 lbs. The OS55 will produce about 1.2 x .55 = .66 lbs thrust. Not enough. You need at least a .7 cu inch 2 stroke or .8 cu inch 4 stroke. This is all very approximate but OK for picking components. There is very little difference in static thrust brand to brand for 2 strokes in the low cost types. I have flown my UCD 46 with a YS 63 which is about enough engine (supercharged). I now have an OS 91 4 stroke on it and that is more than just enough.
Something like a Tower 75 would be a budget engine that will put out the thrust. I don't know how good transition is. I run an OS 50 and OS 46 on 3d planes . They are fine for 4 lb planes and transition smoothly.
Why do they call it a UCD 46 when a .46 engine is too small? I guess they would say a .46 will fly it, just not 3d.

OK, I have been reading this thread for days and man is there a lot of good info in here! I now have a UCD3D.46 in the box in the shop awaiting a build this fall sometime along with a Saito 82 to power it. I do have a couple of questions though for those that are in the know like you fellas. The first one is is probably for Gary since I know he flies JR stuff. How did you reverse your other Elevator servo? Did you buy a reversed one, reverse it yourself, mix it with the radio, or use a reversing Y? Also, I see that many of you are using clear Monocote to seal the control surfaces to help reduce flutter. My question is how are you all getting the covering to be tight and clean but still let the surface flex? Are you ironing it down into the joint while the surface is flexed or??? Anyone have any pictures of their clear monocote job? Thanks everyone and I look forward to getting her built!

AKFireMedic...Can't help with the JR question, I'll leave that to others.
On the hinge seal...I like to do that. Many do not and I don't think it makes any difference on flying performance. But here's how I do it. I cut an inch wide monokote (I use clear or sometime white) I bend the monokote length wise and fit it into the slot. I then iron (use 280 degrees for me) the monokote on the sides using the side of the iron on the angle of the deflected aileron/elevator/rudder surface. I iron firmly and quickly. Don't let the surface get too hot or it shrinks the monokote too much and tries to close the hinged surface. Make sure you get the sides ironed good but don't touch it in the middle of it will shrink and not be flexible. I almost always have a wrinkle or two. But it generally doesn't look too bad.
Really helps with clean up as well.
thanks
Barry
