I just posted a video on RCU of my Gee Bee running for the first time with the Saito 170R. Should be up shortly. Probably no flying for a while here as there is a foot of snow outside. With Saito 170, Robostruts and on board glow driver system with battery she came in at 14lbs 12 oz. Blueprint for disaster I know. Regardless, I had to put this plane and engine together.

Sounds just like my set-up as well except I am using a OS120 III with pump.. Very Nice
video, great job! I am in the mist of doing the Craig Mod for the struts today!

I Hope that you don't mind me posting a direct link to your video. That is an awesome sounding engine! I love the idle and full throttle sounds and everything in between! Throttle response is great too. I can't wait to see and hear your GB in the air. With a heavy bird like yours, I'd probably fly without the pants at first. When the Robart struts bottom out, the pants will contact the ground and most likely shred the pants and cause a hard nose-over.

Here is a link to my telescoping pants thread for the GB and Robart struts that you might want to consider for flying with the pants on.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_56...tm.htm#6583985

I've been working with Cougar trying to develop an easier method for making the sheath for the pants. Cougar tried my fiberglass suggestion and a variation on my metal sheath method that may benefit you if you decide to make telescoping struts.

Thanks for posting the link to my video.

I have checked out your mod for telescoping pants before. I do like the idea. We are in the middle of winter up here and I won't be flying the Gee Bee for a few months at best. Plenty of time to do such a modification.

That OS120III is going to really pull that plane around. Please let me know how the Craig mod goes for you. What is thw weight of your Gee Bee?

I am not sure yet Mr. Casey, How in the heck are you guys weighing these monsters anyways? *lol*
But I will let you know when I figure out how to weigh it.

I use this scale to weigh airplanes. I think it is a fish scale. I borrowed it from work. We use it there to set the control resistance on our flight simulator. This one is digital so it is easy to read. I am not sure what it cost.

Yeah wal mart has one in the fishing section that I purchased about 4 months ago. It is not a digital scale. My gee bee comes out to 10lbs with everything installed.

Hi folks I'm a newbie on this site ,just getting back into the hobbie after about 6 years .I just bought a 170 radial and was hoping to do the GeeBee thing with it. After seeing that Mrcasey 69 's GeeBee is coming out to almost 15 lbs ,I was wondering if this engine might work better in the Nitrohobbies 71 inch span GeeBee ( better wing loading etc ? Any thoughts? Someone should come out with a GeeBee Z in a 70 inch span is what I relly wish....

You might find the 82" Pacific Aeromodels Gee Bee Y a better fit for the Saito 1.70.

[color=#FF0099]Gentlemen,

I told Nick I would post pictures of his "ornament" contribution to my airfield Christmas tree yesterday in his favorite forum. He even autographed the wheel pant for me. She was a beautiful GP GeeBee for all of a flight and a half!!!! [:@]

Happy New Year everyone!

Bev

[color=#FF0099]Equipment failure you could say. Actually Nick would be better at explaining it, but he tried a new connection and thought it was the metal to metal that failed him. She freaked out and went in (with decent altitude)...nothing he could do. It was a pretty plane while it lasted. The first flight was uneventful.

Not to Knock Nitroplanes, but there Gee Bee is nowhere near as nice as the GP. I think you will be disappointed with installing such a nice engine. Just my opinion though.

RevGo, I wish I understood what you meant by your post. "Not as nice as their GP' ????? It is hard to find a suitable plane for a 170R. There are a few out there. But, not a lot. I have tried many options. They all have their merits and disadvantages. 170R is a great sounding/running motor. Not so good power to weight ratio though. No airplane lasts for ever. I can say that I am excited to fly the 170R in the Gee Bee regardless of the results. The motor will survive.

Well Mrcasey I'll be watching your results and see what happens although living in Calgary I don't imagine you'll be flying until april or so ..How much does that Keleo exhaust ring weigh ?

The only reason I'm thinking Nitroplanes GeeBee is because of the increased wing span and lighter wing loading .I realize that their Planes are inferior especially the glue they use seems bogus. I bought one of thier Macchi 200 kits and the wing doesn't even have washout built in so I'd have to build another whole wing .I've also contemplated doing a non-scale wing for it , increase the wingspan about 6 inches and fly the 170 in that .

I agree with you on that. It took me a while to find a good airframe for mine. I started with it in the TopFlite Staggerwing and it flew but power was marginal for a plane that heavy (21.5 lbs). I now have it in the Pacific Aeromodels Clipped Wing Monocoupe and it's a great match. Good power to weight ratio and a superb flyer. Here's a short vid of the engine running (I don't have any video of it flying yet). http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/Monocoupe-Radial-wmv

Sorry to all for the somewhat off topic post.
