Has anybody tried a gyro on the GB elevator?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyros

No, but I did mount a hot dog with extra relish on my elevator once to no avail. Made a terrible mess. I fear that meat products wrapped in bread won't help out. Seriously though, a gyro might help on both the elevator and rudder to prevent a catastrophy. My experience with gyros is to get ones with radio controlled, adjustable sensitivity, otherwise you'll experience "hunting" for center at high speeds.

Maybe I've given the wrong impression here. For me, the problem with the GP GB has not been at higher speeds but near the stall speed and stock landing gear issues. I'm not fond of the noseheavy flight characterisics, but that hasn't caused any major problems for me and any good pilot can compensate for that and get the GP GB to perform any aerobatic trick in the book. I don't think that gyros are necessary to fly or land the GP GB, but they might help out if you've been less than exacting about setting up the CG or elevator throw, because if you've set up the GP GB wrong, it will drop a wing very suddenly at stall.

Seems the only way to go is buy some Adrian page plans and scale them up to a 72" or so wingspan and start glueing wood....

I apologize as the photo is rather old. I think what you are looking for is the balsa wedge shown in the pic below. I think that it adds stability to the landing gear so that the wheels do not find their way into the wheel pants which causes a lot of mishaps on landings. I have always incorporated Haffke's design into all my Gee Bees and the landings are picture perfect I think because of it.

I picked up a used GP Gee Bee with no instructions. It seems to me I read somewhere that 4 degrees downthrust?? and 2 degrees right thrust are required?? Are these built into the firewall or do I have to use washers or something to try to achieve this? What are the correct amounts of downthrust and right thrust? Thanks a lot, Steve47

Yes those are built into the firewall. They shouldn't need to be adjusted. The instructions are on the Tower web site

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXESH9&P=ML

Pay particularly close attention to the balance point and the elevator throw instructions.

My Gee Bee is just finished.
I use a FTL 26cc Gas Engine.
Weight is 5430g
Wing load is 113g/dm2
Radio Futaba 7C 2,4GHz
1x lipoly 2S 2100mAh + TURNIGY 8-15A UBEC
I use one battery for ignition and Rx at the same time (I have red several forums about this setup and my conclusion is it should be ok with 2,4GHz. I am going to test it on ground first.)

I wait for a better weather now to run in the engine, then I'll try to fly the fat girl and land again.
Does anybody fly this beauty with a gas engine?

I saw a gentleman fly his with a gasser and it flew like a dream, but it all ended with a not so good landing. He messed up both landing gears, other than that it flew great.

Great looking setup. I really like you turn-buckle idea with the flying wires. I suppose you simple pull and release? I am just starting a new Gee Bee as the other went in due to throttle connection coming loose. The new one has a MVVS bolted to the front with a pitts muffler. I had to do a bit of hacking to fit the engine. It runs off the Vlach ignition and 6v Nimh.

Hi Rev,
Yes, you just pull the flying wires and release. The wires are joined with an elastic, it is hidden in the fuselage, so it is not a problem to pull and release.
Sorry for your first GeeBee. It is a really pitty when you loose your plane because of such a problem.
Did you use with your previous GeeBee a glow engine or a gaser?
I am curious what would be your weight with a MVVS.
I would say 5430g is an average weight or slightly more then average. Still it is 239g lighter then the geebee in the RCuniverse review using a 120FS. So I believe I have a good chance to handle mine.

I am thinking about getting this plane, but I only have an old good running ST SK-90 for power. I see it is rated for a 90 2 stroke. has anybody here type a 90 2 stroke in this plane?

I have only flown mine with 4 strokes. saito 100 and a OS 120. It crashed with the saito and the 120 os flys it like a dream. If I were to put a 2 stroke in it I would go with os 91, 120 or a supertigre 2300. The ST 2300 will be overkill but it will keep you from adding dead weight.

My last Gee Bee was equipped with the Super Tigre G2300. It was actually well suited for this race plane. I was originally intending to put this motor in the new plane, but the price of nitro convinced me to go to petrol. I am in love with the electronic ignitions, longer flights, and monetary saving of course. Once I get her together I'll put her fat behind on a scale.

I'd like to know the total weight of the plane witht he small gas engine. The wing area on this plane is a little small for a gas engine and I'd be worried about the high wing loading If weight is needed up front to balance this plane then a small gas engine my just be the trick. How much do you think your plane will weigh with you gas engine and what gas engine are you planning on using.

You do not need a lot of weight up front. I have had two Gee Bee and they balanced out perfect with the OS 120surpass. The first one I put the radial engine cover and it made it very noise heavy so I had to move electronics back, and add about 3/4 of a oz to the tail. I will say go with anything around 33- 34 oz (2.08 lbs) and you will be good( this is without the radial engine cover).

Thanks for the info on the balance of the plane with the OS 120. Since I already have the ST 90SK I'll us it wiht the radial engine cover. That shole make it just about right.
