GP GEE BEE

I plan on installing a G23, but will make a final decision after I hang the motor and try to balance the airframe.
This is the nicest ARF that I've run across. The workmanship is very good. Glue seems to be everywhere that it should be. I'm very impressed so far.

Ya, Colin, I'll get more pics when I get something done.
My "shop" is in my computer room. I didn't figure that I needed much of a building board to assemble this ARF. If need be, I'll go out to my regular work shop and use it's board, but I think I can get by with this one.

Well, I finally got time to start building. I started wtih the wing, which was pretty basic. I do however glass all center sections using fairly stout fiber-glass and Bondo fiber-glass resin. I like the way this combination sands.

The landing gear wire is reinforced with a balsa triangle piece wedged between the leading and trailing wire of gear. The balsa is secured with fiber-glass which is saturated with medium CA. The pants fit over the assembly without a hitch and if needed in future the wheel pant can be secured to balsa for more stability.

I test fitted the belly pan after cutting notch at center and initial trimming of sides. I guess I am one of the lucky ones as the belly pan appears to be a very good fit. The rear of the pan is only an 1/8 of an inch high at the rear saddle area, just a bit higher than the dime seen in the accompanying photo.

Did a test run on Super Tigre G23 using Perry Carb, ran like a tiger using 18x8 prop. I am uncertain as to how to mount engine. The instructions suggest 6 inches from firewall to front of rear prop washer. I think I read somewhere here that this may cause Super Tigre carb to interfere with dummy radial engine.
If anyone has any advise on how far back to move engine on mount to clear dummy radial, I would be appreciative. Also, what was the weight penalty for doing so, that is did you have to compensate by adding ounces to the nose for balance?

I thought that I would be able to use the Super Tigre G2300 stock muffler, but it was a bit to large as it touched the sides of the fuse cut out. I have ordered a Bisson 70 deg. pipes # 2231 muffler. From looking at the catelog picture, I think it might be the right muffler for the application. I welcome any thoughts on choice of muffler. Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
Sure hope this thread is not dead!

I got my Gee Bee in yesterday. One of the servo bays is not cut out in the wing. Its not a problem to fix but its just a hassel to have to do it. Did anyone else run into any problems like that?

Wow, I just finshed mine, no problem like that.
I did read the review on RCU for the GP Gee Bee, after that I did change the assembly order. Gluing the wing together last is a big help.
I alson ended up cutting the rear of the belly pan off so it would fit properly. It did not seem to weaken it, still stiff enough.
I also found some larger control horns for the ailirons, the bevel and gap is so big the stock horns did not lean over enough to get the hole over the centerline of the hinge
I installed a slightly bigger tank to go with my 120 surpass too, good luck

How would the Magnum 120 four stroke pull this thing around the sky? And does tower hobbies sell them onboard glow drivers, I have never had a 4 stroke inverted, I guess they are a pain though?
Thanks

I like to run all my four strokes inverted. They seem to run better that way. When I mount them sideways they run rich when flying knife edge one way and lean the other. That is basiclly tank placement though. When mounted upright its harder to start them by hand. I have a Saito 180 mounted on my GEE BEE now. Everything fit great. I hope to be able to fly it this week end.

Hi guys
I'm the friend Tom is talking about and the GeeBee in the pics is mine.
Where do I start... what a great plane it is I have been flying it about 18+ months now with no real problems. It is powered by a tuned by west magnum 120. All I can say is rocket propelled trashcan
The only problem in the build was the belly pan was not a very good fit. I am using Hitec HB325 servos all round. For the throttle I have installed a servo inside the cowel on the firewall, which even though is soaked in oil works fine.
It flys like a dream and I didn't have to add any ballast at all. the CG is as per instructions, it does anything you ask of it and knife edges forever. The only problems I have had is when landing on long grass I have had 2 problems, the first is the screws that hold the wheel pants on started to come loose so I put longer ones in which sorted it. The other is the wheel pants have started to crack on the front join at the bottom so I would advise putting some glass cloth to strengthen the area.
On a final note you CANNOT land this plane slowly. The best way to describe how to land is to bring it in as though your going to carry out a touch and go but don't go just let it run out.

Decisions decisions, the Gee Bee looks like a pretty cool plane, if I get one I would strip the electronics out of my Shoestring. I just dont want to buy it and the first landing attempt I total it out. Is this plane a really fun plane to fly? I know it definitely looks like a one of a kind plane. What to do what to do

Are 4strokes a pain to keep running when they are mounted inverted, somewhere in this long thread I thought I read about putting a on board glow driver when the throttle is below 1/4 to prevent dead sticks, would anyone recomend one of these, and if so, does tower have them.

I run most of my 4st engines inverted and a couple on their side. ALL without glowdrivers and i have never had any problems with them. personally I think it is setup and fuel that are important, if your bottom end isn't to rich and your fuel is good you won't douse the plug.

Hopefully the thread is not Dead...I was awaiting a muffler from Bisson, which took some time to arrive. The 70 deg. pipes are at the right angle for the fuselage slot, but the pipes were a bit too wide apart. So, I used a vise to bring them together, see photos.

RevGQ,
Not dead...just dorment! I see my GeeBee sitting in the shop, and I do want to fly it again, but I've gotta wait until our flying field is worked over. I will have enough room to set this thing up for a proper landing then!
Engine looks good. Ever notice that just about everything looks small mounted on that firewall?
Steve
