The Iron Bay regulator is pretty much same as the Cline, only machined from aluminum. They offer a lifetime warranty on the check valve and diaphram. I will be using fuel dots as you are but this will be my first experience using them. Are you going to remount your engine and are you concerned about the stock tank splitting from the pressure?? Sent my .91 back to Quantum, they got it Monday morning but are not shipping the 100 out until today. I'm wondering why they sat on it for two days, I sent a money order with the .91 for the price difference and return shipping. It looks like Dave used a Sullivan tailwheel on his. I have one of those on my Super Decathlon and like it alot. Thanks, Brian....

Brian,
Glad tho hear things are coming along. FWIW, I also used the stock tail wheel and didn't do any mods to the LG. Unless you really hammer this thing to the ground you shouldn't have any problems with either. As Joe said and I can attest, the UCD 60 is very gentle when landing. Simply put, it floats in on a puff of air. It's hard to imagine busting the gear out unless you get caught low with a dead stick and catch the gear in a clump of grass.

Roger, it didn't take long to figure out that damaged gear, as some have experienced, is not the fault of the UCD. Like two feathers taped together.
Brian, yes, I am in the process now of setting up an extra engine mount on an old firewall. With the prep work done this way, then the process will be just a swap out when ready. I have to elongate the mounting holes to shift it way over to compensate for the now 4 degrees of right thrust. The larger prop needs this angle. As far as the tank bursting, I think all manufactures make the claim that their products won't burst. The way I see it , you would probably blow a line off before that happens. Who knows? Joe

Joe,
While UR at it, can I send you my mount and plates?? I would appreciate a photograph of the new set up if you can when done. Are you going to put the 3 degree and 1 degree plates together to get your 4?? If so, I'll tack Ca mine together before I send em to ya!! Using your expertise, hopefully, I'll only have to do this once!! My friend has one he just put together bone stock with A Saito .91 (by the way it floods like hell). Maiden will be Friday if the winds will cooperate. He thinks I'm nuts with what I'm doing, so he is really going to be interested in the outcome.

Brian, yes, I'll be useing the 3+1 degree plates. You may only need 3 degrees with a 15" prop. This 16/4 is a different ball game. As far as others not wanting to put any effort into the mods that matter, what can I say. They are also the ones that will stand back and marvell over our results or just not admit to the benefits and go out of their way to convince others that it is not necessary, to justify their lax approach. Again, its all about how anal you want to get. For some it just dosn't matter. "What do you mean, balance the prop".

Thank Joe,
Marvelous words of wisdom!! Lucan, Wish there was a way we could help you out with the prices. Must be the damn shipping you know. Joe, did you go three lines with the fuel system or just T into both lines?? Curious about how you mounted the fuel dots, or did you just leave em hanging?? I'm thinking about mounting mine under the tunnel with an Adel clip or something. Won't be able to talk with you guys over the weekend. My retirement party is Saturday and I have to drive to Gainesville Florida on Sunday to help deliver the Four Star 120 I sold. If you guys can help me with how to post photographs, I will try to do so. I do not profess to be a computer expert, but my flying buddy will lend me his digital camera. Later Friends.....

Dave, as in the last mount, I am elongating the engine mount, mounting holes. Basicaly altering the horizontal slots provided. I am trying to squeeze in that little bit more needed, without busting through the remaining stock to get it over as far as can be. The one before this, with a little filing from a round file, the mount came out flush with the side of the fuse. I'm looking for a tad more, or go back to a 15" prop, which centered perfectly at three degrees. I may have to order the 15/4 APC. With only a few, brief, shakedown flights, I cannot say if the 16/4 is for me, at this point in time. Further evaluation is needed. The UCD is just sitting on the floor in my office, calling me, shhhhhh, can you hear it? The way work is going, I'm just sitting, thinking, trying to come up with a creative way to end it all. Can you hear the voices?

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the Sullivan tailwheel part number I will pick one up today. I also ordered the OS remote glow parts, but also picked up a Tettra glow plug cap. Some of the pattern guys swear by these and say they won't come off.
Joe,
Thanks for the info on the engine and fuel dots. Got the fuel regulator yesterday and just read the instruction manual. Iron Bay prefers crankcase pressue over muffler pressure. I have to find out if I can "T" off the rear crankcase vent on the Saito with the check valve, sounds like it might work.
Roger,
How are you?? Thanks for your encouragement also.
Generally, I'm only going to swap the tailwheel bracket out and use one like Dave's. I really like the Sullivan parts. No mods to the main gear, mostly following Joe's example with the Dubro pinned hinges, fuel tank to CG, fuel regulator to deal with that, Saito 100 should be plenty of power with a 3 degree Ernst thrust plate. Think I'll start out with a 15X6 APC. Carbon fiber pushrods etc. Anyone have any opinions either pro or con about using Dubro HD 4/40 swivel ball links on the servo ends?? I have some extra ones and this seemed like a good place to use them. Most of my parts should be here by the end of this week, then have the dreaded jury duty next week, so looks like the first week of May. Like I said I'm not in a hurry just want it right. Brian...

Ohh yeahhh, 4/40 ball links on servo arms and them there HD composit clevises with the brass pin and the brass sliding/locking keeper. Dubro I believe, but I don't have the number. Joe

Oh Joe,
Got the 4/40 Dubro locking clevises already, always keep those in stock in 2/56 also for my smaller stuff. Used them on the Decathlon and like 'em!! Most everyone here is starting to use them. We've seen too many crashes caused by cheap plastic hardware going south. I lost an airplane once due to the threads stripping out of a steel clevis. AHHHH retirement!! 21 years in law enforcement don't ya know!! Leaving as a detective lieutenant. Paid my dues, got my t-shirt, sick of it, can fly more, be a house ***** and it's time to go!! I am hoping that as time goes on, my horse trading in the hobby will allow my spending habit to pay for itself. I already have guys offering me money to put their ARF'S together. Thought I had better get this one together first and then go from there.

Stoney, I'm not sure if I will ever experience that. No tee shirt for me, self employed. It does leave some flexability when somebody calls to go flying though. Detective lieutenant, impressive, bet that didn't come easy. I put a UCD together for a friend and that helped pay for what I'm flying now. If I could get that kinda work, I would close up shop tomorrow. Joe

Read about your being self employed in an earlier thread. That's why I asked you if I could send my motor mount and Ernst plate to you. I'm not the engineering type and figured you might have the time. I loved the work and actually pretty good at putting crooks in jail. I supervised a squad of detectives and oh, the hours we put in!! The job gets to you after awhile as you can probably imagine. When the job effects your family and your own health like it was doing to me it's time to go. I have only been back in the hobby a little over two years after a 20 year hiatus. I had one three channel R/C airplane back then, but used to fly C/L combat and rat race when my reflexes were better. I'm looking for a good combat motor now so I can play a little with the C/L guys. Congratulations to you, there's alot to be said for being self employed. Generally shows character and dedication in a person.

Great respect to you sir...21 years..got some stories to tell there i'm sure !
Looked at those ball links some time ago,in fact , used 'em on that CAP 232...the one like Autoguns has got... must admit to finding them a tad fiddly..if you didnt get 'em spot on they seemed to bind...i probabally didnt install 'em correctly
...i feel an order from Tower coming on...
Joe...Now then..been going round the side thrust thing on the Cyclone ..virtually no room for any up front with a 1.20 welded on...but looking at the vert stab slot ,it seems some offset has been built in here Joe ,whats the Pro's and Con's of eng sidethrust Vs vert stab offset..look at foto for amount..
Finished off the trim on the Extra last night..i'm pleased with the way this has turned out..not easy, but worth it in the end...Dare'nt put it on the scales..
...looks like the GP balance m/c will be coming out again this w.end...
Running out of time now ...the nights are getting lighter ...She's filling the greenhouse up with plants.
...she has a list of chores for me going into four pages...[:-]..TTFN

David, the UCD seems to be proof that the offset vertical stab does not work, or is simply not enough. With the offset incorporated into the UCD by GP engineers, and still requireing minimum of 3 degrees on the mount, (for larger engines) it makes you wonder. Perhaps the manufacturers of the cyclone have figured it out. So much testing on things that have been tested. Can't tell from the pic too well with your big mitts in the way. I would mark the center of the fuse and guide the straight edge against the angled sides and mark that. Within the length of that distance, as opposed to the seperation of the two marks, you could come up with the degree of angle. Unfortunatly, I am not the one to calculate that. We need a math wizz or a programmer to enter the data into a Hal 9000 at the very least. This may be a first, I didn't think that one could bollox up ball links. Nice job on old glory. Joe

I'm back, it took some cypherin' but here goes. On the offset of the vertical stab, again I find that the dimensions appear to be inversely proportioned to the square of the distance. Hypothetically, for a lack of parametrical dimensions of the cyclone in question, lets say the length of the vertical stab and the recieving slot, at its base is 4.5" long. If it were offset by 1/16" in that distance, then 0.0625/4.5 = sin (offset angle). so, (offset angle) = arcsin (0.0625/4.5) = 0.8 degree. It dosn't seem like much and I havn't figured out if the length of the fuse adds any leverage to that small angle. Also by offsetting the thrust angle of the engine by 3 degrees, is that now a combined 3.8 degree? Hal

the only trouble i'll get with the Extra when they get a squint at it at the field will be...."Where didja get the kit from?"( Tower )...." Wow! Monokote..where didja get that.." ( Tower )...." How didja do the trim ...i'll have a go at that.."

Hey....I'm a whiz at bolloxin up the most straightforward tasks....C of G's ...Drapes...You name it..
I'll get some real data on that stab offset tonite...we'll drift off into deep space with that later.. [8D]i thought the effect of stab offset became more pronounced with increased forward speed... not that the UCD,or cyclone, was going to be bothered much by this..
Those are HER big mitts..[:-]....?...! hence i do as i'm told...?...!..i made her shave her arms though.. TTFN

Dave, it really does look nice. With all the negative press these days it seem like something that wouldn't go over well. Glad to know that maybe it's not as bad as the media portrays.
Brian, funny you mentioned plastic clevises. I saw a guy lose a Slow-Poke a while back because the plastic clevis on the elevator pulled out. It was ugly. I always use either ball joints or metal clevises myself.
Joe, you are getting way too technical for me. LOL .....Go man go.

Dave, my apologies to wifey. The story of my life, mouth in high gear, brain in low.
Roger, it did sound pretty technical, didn't it. Now if I only knew what I was talking about, it would come off as being a little more convincing.
I've placed an order for the 15/4 APC and will stick with 3 degres for now. Upon re-reading some past posts it turns out that Dave picked up on the differences in the pics of something amiss in comparing engine to engine. It is now clear, as I believe Brian pointed out as well, that my engine mount is upside down. Something even the digital spectrometer did not pick up. Joe

Joe, Roger, Raj, and anyone who is good at math...stab offset convesion to degree's...
Pull up a chair... At a distance of 1000mm from the rear edge of the stab, the centre line of the stab is 11.5mm off the centre line of the fuse .....o.k. so far
The rear edge of the stab is 1560mm from the prop driving face ...whats the angle of stab offset for the quoted 11.5mm, and if there was any error reading the rule, for 11mm & 12mm also...Joe..
THIS is wifey demonstrating ..
...Green marks in photos to aid your calculus...show all working out on a seperate piece of paper...
Went off in a frenzy of ( probabally ) unbalanced props and spinners etc today and got a "Top Flight" magnetic, " Precision balancer "..Ace ! ..the mandrel "Floats in air " at one end....amazing..! most of my props where 'off' ( even though i'd balanced 'em previously )...but all the ( new ) TruTurn spinners where spot on...
Weather is SUPPOSED to be exelent all weekend
...all things on charge should be quite a tribe up at "Flight Dispersall"......14:00 Hrs tomorrow... TTFN

David, If your centerline is the mark on the left and the angle that you are trying to determine is the mark on the right, and taking into consideration that the image has not been reversed as it traveled thru a black hole or some other anomally in transit to the states, then.............. it appears that the stab is angled in the wrong direction. It appears that it will guide your model to the left, if..... I'm viewing your marks correctly. Joe
