I used the 400TV, the DuBro treaded wheels. A perfect fit and they look nice. I'm not sure if the width of the untreaded tire is the same, but if it is, then I guess it would be a personal preference thing. I think Robart sells a diamond treaded tire, I meant to look into buying it since it has more of a stearman look to it, but I forgot and bought the Dubro instead. If I didn't use the wheel pants though, I would definately check out the Robart diamond wheels.

The cowl measures 8 3/4 inches in diameter. The G26 works well but then so does a Magnum 120. This plane flies totally scale and no engine is going to make it fly any differently. I used the Magnum with an on-board glo-driver and housed both batteries in the weight box above the engine. The plane balanced great. Like the idea of the 4 inch dubros as this thing is a real bouncer on anything but grass and I even managed it there once. As to the four servos on the elevators, I used different holes in the servo arms to get the differential in the throws. I y'd each set and ran the top extension out at the top of the left cabane. I just wrap it around the cabane and plug it into a Ernst connector I put in the fuse at the cabane base. Works great. Getting both wings on at the field is a little time consuming (5 min) but the plane is a dream and well worth it. At one point I even mounted a color video camera (tiny one from Raidentech) between the cabanes. Video is on Members video. Check out the full review I did on this last year in Users Reviews. I'm taking mine out for the first time this year today. Nice clear skies!!

I am thinking about installing a G-26 on the stearman, but I really wanted to know about the vertical power of the plane. I will be installing a B&B smoke system as well. I know this will not provide unlimited power, but at the same time I want solid scale power during the vertical.

I can't wait to get one in the air!!!

SMOKE RULES!!!

Can anyone tell me if this thing will fit fully assembled in a mini van ? In this case a 1996 Ford Aerostar. I was able to carry a 63" Midwest Stearman with room to spare but I don't know how much to spare. I don't do bipe field assembly I had a Goldberg Ultimate for 10 years that was disassembled maybe 10 times.

Yes, i read it all.. took me 2 days to read the entire topic lol... BUT:

I really cant recall anyone using the OS91FX on this plane. The manual says its for 91(2strokes) or 120(4strokes) so i think both engines provides quite same power?

Well, i want a scale flight with classic aerobatics plus smoke system. Do you think an OS91FX will do the job?

If anyone here uses this engine, witch prop do u use?

Thanks in advance!

Ran a Saito 220 in the plane with stock tank and location on a field test bench yesterday for initial break-in and got lots of flooding with the engine shut off. and difficult starting.

Had to clamp the muffler pressure line to stop flooding when off.

Read the Perry pump suggestion. Has anyone else tried this on this plane?

Any other suggestions on this problem.

Thanks.

ORIGINAL: rexracer

I'm a little nervous about the stock tank location and my inverted Saito 1.80. I ran the engine on a test stand yesterday with the small test tank centered on the crank and the engine inverted, just like it will be in the plane, and it was siphoning fuel and flooding the carb. I disconnected the pressure hose from the muffler and managed to get it started, ( one flip after it spit all the fuel out of the carb) so I'm worried. I did notice afterwards that, due to the smaller tank on the test stand, the clunk was quite a bit higher than the carb. I checked out the stock tank, and it looks like the clunk will end up almost level with or slightly above the carb. I'm going to re-mount the test tank to put the clunk at this level and see if it helps.
Anyone who has put an inverted 4 stroke in this plane with the stock tank location, please chime in and let me know how it all worked out. Did you need to lean it alot? Did anyone need to use a regulator? Has anyone tried to lower the tank?(I don't know if I trust myself to try this...I can't even see in there) Randy

os 91fx is way too small, this is a 15lbs plane, mine has a small gas engine 26cc and the aerobatics are very limited.

would think a 1.50 fourstroke would be ok. but if you want smoke then the extra weight of the smoke tank has to be taken into consideration.

A great flying airplane. Have an old ST-2500 on mine and it's perfect. Take it easy with the rudder on take-off and landing. It will snap if rudder use is too aggresive. Mine snapped out on takeoff and went straight in from 6'. Only broke prop, spinner and dinged the cowl alittle. tough airplane!!!!

Guys ive been thinking about using the OS160 (2-strokes) and add smoke system. Im plan to fly classic aerobatics but i would like to have very good vertical climb too. And its not that bad to have extra power even if i need to fly half throttle for scale flight.

At first time i thought it could be to much engine but its a biplane (1,80m / 1,75m wingspans) wich has lots of drag, plus smoke system and wires on the wings for eyecandy.

What do you say?

Whats the best starter cone setup for the blunt spinner included in the kit?
I did a quick search of theis thread and found no info on the starter cone needed. Has anyone a suggestion? I have a hi torque sullivan starter ...mine has a bad habit of wandering off the hub and its not safe at all..
Thanks for any help...

I say I think you will be suprised at how good of an aerobatic plane this Stearman is. OS 160 should work real nice.

Sierradelta,
The 1.60 is a great motor for this plane. My self and another member of the field I flew at had it in them. It balanced perfect without any added weight. It was put together exactly by the book. The stock tank has more than enough capacity for a 10 min+ flight.

foodstick,I just got a large starter cone from sullivan,I was having the same problem with my starter now the cone fits good and spins the g-26 right up.I am using the dynatron.Had to make a flat spot in the starter shaft for the set screw witch does not come with it you will need a 3/8,s set scerw. If you make the flat spot good you can still fit the bolt to hold the small cone on if you like to switch back.I also switched my field batt.to a 12amp motor cycle batt.my 7amp field would not spin the g-26.so my set up is,12amp batt, sullivan dynatron starter, large cone. There are 2 large cones from sullivan I have the small one.Works great.

Thanks alot guys!!!

Thats great, i hoped this engine could make it without having to add dead weight.

1)Please, what prop are you using?

2)How your engine was instaled? Upside down or to the right?

SierraD.,
The motor is mounted at 90 degrees. I use a bisson pitts style muffler. The only prop I have ever had on it is a master airscrew classic 18x6. It pulls it with plenty of umph!!. The only thing I changed from the stock set-up was the tires. The stock ones are like hard doughnuts. Plus they wear out rather quickly on pavement and look like crap as the white foam they are made of statrs to show. I put a set of inflatable dubros on it. They look great and even help out a great deal with bunny hop down the runway that "some" people have once in awhile. Hope this helps.

Thanks for info, Stange!

Im writing it all down. The tires thing, some complains about the tail wheel too.
The pitts style muffler will allow me to add smoke i guess. I will have to look closer at this since will be my first model with smoke system and im not sure about how to plan its instalation yet.

One more question i forgot to add, im just curious. Does the 160 fits completely inside the engine's cowl?

Thx again.

Sierra,
Yes the 160 will fit completely in the cowl. The pipes on the muffler hang out about 2" and you dont even really notice them. You will have to drill a hole in the side of the cowl for the glow driver (mine is about the size of a nickel) and once again the plane is so big you dont even really notice it. Of course you could have on board glow if you want. My 160 has never(ever) flamed out doesnt, matter how long it idles.

Last weekend we had a great spring day and a fellow club member show up with his Great Planes Stearman. What a beautiful airplane both on the ground and in the air. Here are a few photos I shot enjoy.

Great shots, Sam! Thanks.

Does anyone know or have any sugestion about a dummy engine that could fit well for this plane in case i want to take the engine cowl off? I think it looks great but i also like the Stearman without engine cowl + wheel pants.

You mean dummy engine like the PT-17 version of this plane has?

You can buy the PT-17 dummy engine as a replacement part from Tower Hobbies. You'd also need the PT-17 cowl for mounting the dummy onto, which they also have.

I think the dummy engine that comes with the PT-17 looks hideous, so I did up a Williams Bros. 7 cylinder dummy for my GP PT-17. Since I'm doing mine as an electric, it doesn't have to get hacked up to make a glow engine fit inside it.
