Hey rcav8r4
I just bought a 120 size Edge 540 from hobbywholesale in Alberta. Waiting for it to arrive. I'm going to put a Laser 150 in it but figure I can't fly until the snow goes and it warms up - 2 1/2 months!!

Mark-
Please tell us more, reading your posts about flying your edge is better than nothing when your freezing half to death up here (i know tfacr, its only Wisconsin not canada but its too cold to fly!).Mark, What engine do you have in yours?, I have a saito 100 in mine but it just sits here waiting for mother nature to show me some mercy Randy.

Hi guys,
well after last weekends disappointment I got the Edge patched up yesterday and also got around to installing the cowl so she was looking very sweet. (see pic, repairs pic to come).
Had a bit of trouble with tuning the motor, the angle key I was using flew straight out of my hand the prop wash was so strong.... go 1.20! :-) So we nose tested it and it seemed ok but must have been too lean as the engine stalled after about 5 mins as I was going in to a stall turn (no pun intended). So anyway had to come in for a deadstick, it seemed to glide quite well (high wind making it come down like a kite) but then she just dropped at the last minute and bingo, broke the spats and popped half of the undercarriage mounting block (again, same as last time). So anyway after a bit of toing and froing I managed to do a temporary field repair and went up for a second run. This time she flew sweet as a nut (a mate had a more appropriate tuning rod for the high speed needle) until, the left wheel fell off... damn!
So anyway, faced with the challenge of landing on one wheel, I brought it in in a hover (lucky for high wind) and it polished off the undercarriage, no other damage to the plane... lucky for the first incident otherwise it would have been a lot worse.
Anyway, I've got some low quality footage of starting up and takeoff (fliying too but from too far away) so I'll try and get my site up and running so the guys who are stuck in the snow with their kits can at least see what they have to look forward too.
cheers!

Hi guys, further to my earlier posts.... be cautious with the undercarriage of your Edge. I have been recommended to use plastic bolts as our flying field is quite rough and it puts a lot of stress on the internal mounting structure. The undercarriage member is very big and strong but isn't held in by a lot so it's always the weekest link to go....
Here's a pic of my repair incorporating 2 extra stringers, resheeting with balsa and covering with some white... I couldn't find the right colour red at the model shop and the plane has white anyway so it matched relatively well.
Not a bad job for someone who likes the flying more than the building side of the hobby ( I even used sandpaper :-0 )

The CG is good.
I'm using 3 full size servos mounted in the back end so I think that offsets it.
I've got my battery mounted at the front of the wing so not as far back as I'd originally thought, but still a good bit further forward than the manual.
The CG is less of a problem than the flying weight. It must have quite a high wing loading, when you'd expect the ground affect to kick in it just tends to drop unless slightly above idle.
broke my 15*8 prop so back to the 16*6, some of the guys were saying to go for 16*8 or maybe 18*6, your thoughts?

I'm using a os91fx with a 14x6 master airscrew prop. I have metal gear servo's all around except throttle. The plane weighted out at 7lbs. 3oz. I mounted my 2 - 6.0v batteries where the instructions said to mount the one. I had to do nothing to the weight it weighed out almost right on the spec. I also increased the tank size to a 14oz tank. The weather has been just great here lately. The thing I like is that I can land it very slow and it doesn't have weird stall tactics. Well that is the way it has been with mine but then I am using a lighter motor then some of the others.

Hi Gricer - thanx for the pics - nice to see someone getting some air time this time of year.
Your repairs look ok to. Did you do anything to further reinforce the block that the gear attaches to?
When I have used my Saito 120 I have had good success with a 16-8 on Byrons 15% nitro fuel.
cheers and good luck on the next flight.

Hi tfacr, I got mine from Hobby wholesale too, but the store is just a 20 minute drive away. I got mine a week ago and they had 4 in stock so yours'll come soon. I have a moki 1.8 to go in it. Still finishing my last project so haven't started it. The temperature now is -30 C and we can't get into the field for all the snow so I guess I have some time to get it ready.

Hi guys,
On sunday I managed to remember my digital camera (actually a cheap webcam with batteries). So brought it up to the field to get some footage and turned out a quick clip with some Edge action. The clip was a foray in to Windows Movie Maker which I found to be really great. The airborne footage is very poor, I promise to take my proper digital camcorder out and get some better footage in coming weeks.
If you'd like to check it out I have posted two clips, one in 320*240 and one in 640 * 480 at the following address. Sorry if the server is a bit slow but heh what can you expect for free?

Hi rcav8r4
Just got my Edge 540 today. Got to balance my P-47 Thunderbolt (Saito 120) then hang it up and start on the Edge. Thinking of a Moki in the future - your opinion?
We had a great storm last weekend - another 1/2 metre. Months 'til flying season!
Gricer - look forward to your pics

After doing some violent 3d my plane acted a little unstable so I brought it in. Just in time too. the horizontal stab was holding on by the monocote! I installed gussets on each side of the horizontal stab and added support wires. I was very lucky this time and I think you should add some support to every Seagull Models Edge.

Thanks for the info geebee_r2 - will do.
Hey rcav8r4 - got into my Edge 120 today - instructions said there was a spinner, I never got one, did you? Motor mount is too small for a four stroke - is it OK for the moki? Are you going to glass the wing joint or just go with what the book says?
cheers

yep - add supports to all planes that you want to do 3d with, just a fact of life that you need additional strenth. the heavier the plane the bigger the stress.

Hi tfacr, I didn't get a spinner either and I didn't get the motor mount either. Was it supposed to be in the hardware bag? I'll phone Hobby Wholesale tomorrow and ask. If they don't know, the Canadian distributor is here in Edmonton so I'll phone him. The motor mount isn't a big deal as the Moki has a backplate mount. Yep, I'll definitely glass the wing center joint.

Hi rcav8r4 - I have been through the whole package and the instructions say "spinner and backplate" but there is no spinner in the box. The motor mount is attached to the fuse but as I said its too short for a 4 stroke. It looks like a nylon type - kinda cheap so I'm going to use another one regardless.
I also thought the landing gear is cheezy - its two thin pieces of aluminum bolted together to make a thicker one. I'll dump that too. Too bad in an AFR that's so expensive.
Check on the Seagull supplier or the hobby shop and pls let us know.
cheers

hey guys big planes hardly ever come with a spinner because of the massive variation in engine type and prop size. as far as the landing gear goes the twin plate system is a great idea as you retain max strength in the strategic places without the extra weight. we have made several of this type design with marvelous results. let us have some pics guys, enjoy.

adrian - thanks for your input - I don't really care about the spinner - the instructions said it was there, so..where is it?
Pics when it is assembled, sure, but no flying pics until the snow goes!

ask and get one if it's supposed to be included. we are also seriously debating a 120 but we are contemplating between the edge120 and the new world model 3d. maybe both it's all about money.

adrian - I called and asked - their reply was that they use similar instructions for all sizes - OK I buy that and they said that the 120 size does not come w/ a spinner b/c with larger engines most people (me too) want to use a metal spinner.
Even if I got the plastic, I'd use metal. I had a Vmar kit (piece of crap - all their products!)and the plastic spinner wobbled. I chucked it.
Best to use metal w/ an engine 60 or over.

Hey rcav8r4 - I started the Edge 540 today and found out the dihedral brace was too long and fit real sloppy in the wing halves. I glued some 1/16 balsa on one side and then sanded it until it was a tight fit, cut about 1" off the end then epoxied it in. Good fit, held well. Next I'll glass the join.
How are you coming on yours?
I'm gonna be away for a few weeks so maybe you'll have it finished by then??
