my wife just flew a spad last friday.. i got it up there for her and handed her the tx for almost 2 full minutes she was too shaky after the 2 minutes that she handed it back, but i was impressed by the fact that she didn't have to throw it at me in terror, actually she handed it back in level flight, she did really well, but i don't think she would be interested if i weren't into it so deep.. however, she soaks up everything she hears at the field and what i say around the house and knows a surprising amount about this hobby!

My daughter is 4, and every time I fire up the simulator, she has to join in.

Admittedly, she crashes often, but she's getting a grasp of the basics pretty quickly. I'm about to join a local club, and I have a feeling she'll be out with at the field pretty often.

I wonder at what point they lose all interest in anything not "girly"...

My four year old daughter has to take her turns at the simulator too and crashes a lot too. I've taken her out to the field a handful of times, she really enjoys watching the planes (and stopping to get donuts on the way). I was a little nervous about her being around some of the planes (not touching or running around them) and the props, but she has listened and followed all of my rules that I gave her. She is very respectful of other people's planes, she'll get me to walk her over to other planes so she can look at them. I'm hoping she maintains her interest in the planes and me. My family actually has three generations out at the field, my dad, me and my daughter. Now if we could only get my mom and wife out there...

I have a 8 yr old granddaughter that flys with me. She has a powered glider and does pretty well with it. My wife attends all of the club functions but does not fly. Doesnt want to. We go to Muncie for the extreme championships and to float flys and she enjoys watching. But she does make lots of treats.

my local club is made up of mostly old men... im the only flyer thats under 40 years old :P and theres 26 of us (about 20 i never see at the field) but i guess thats because its a rather small club, may have to move to a bigger one soon as my planes get bigger :P

would be nice to see more young people getting into the sport, females especially, but then again i have yet to meet a woman who maintains an interest in engines, aircraft and mechanical stuff in general (possibly why i can never keep a good relationship :P)

Yeah, my club is made up with mostly older gentlemen too. Now, that I think about it, if it weren't for these old guys the club probably wouldn't have gotten started. In a past club newsletter, their is this man named, Tom Stevens. It showed all his accomplishments, his planes hes built, and how he got started in the hobby of RC. After, reading that I began to have a great deal of respect for the older gentlemen in the club. They truly have great wisdom, flying and building skills, etc. I do agree with Wild Foamy, it would be nice to see more young pilots get into this hobby. But, in my club their are 4 other young pilots my age that I'm real good friends with. Although, I do wish that more female pilots get into the hobby, I'm the first and only girl in the club and I'm not sure that our club will ever have another female pilot. I actually don't mind being the only girl, but, it would be nice to see another girl out at the field.

That's about how my club is except we have about 80 members. They are mostly old folk (nothing wrong with this), and there only about 10 that I see regularly at the field. I am the youngest member at 15, I think one of the reasons that you don't see a lot of kids in the hobby is because it's so expensive and time consuming. Another thing is that most people can't fly there plane in their back yard, which required mom or dad to drive you to the field.

i must be one of the lucky ones, my dad and i are both into Rc planes so we both go to the field together, he buys most of the planes and i fly them

but i do like to build and fly my own, theres a good degree of satisfaction knowing you built it yourself.

TakingFlight96, if you find yourself down my way drop in and say hi, would be good to meet someone else my age that is actually interested in model aviation, instead of just cars, booze and women

I must be one of the lucky ones too. Me and my dad go out to the field, do father/daughter bonding, watch WWII movies, Top Gun Invitational, Warbirds over the Rockies, (we both love warbirds, he named me after the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Allison v12 engine) and since we're both on RCU we would mention a certain post, or did you read this one ? and we can talk about it, share our opinions. Its cool having my dad in it as well, because since my sister and mom don't have a clue about airplanes we kinda speak our own language. My dad buys all the planes and I help build some of his, I build mine with a little help from him. I throw in some money to help buy fuel. Right now, I'm gonna try and sell my Stampede (I used to be into RC cars for a little bit) for some money to buy fuel for the upcoming flying season.

Currently, I'm not only a woman flier, I'm a woman builder as well. I do have my own Guillows 500 series, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk that I'm working on as a winter project, and to get a feel for building. Which I may be doing a lot of in the future. I'm offically hooked.

You guys need to come to my field. Recently, some girls have started to fly. About 3-4 of them, the came with a group of EP newbies and now they are flying GWS E Starters and ESky Nemos. Soon they will go to glow then gassers I guess. Its really fun to see them as we are so used to RC being a guy thing only. Oh yes ... its hot in Asia and the girls do not mind that too!

TakingFlight - looks like you are a better modeller than me!

The P-40 is indeed a magnificant piece of aeronautical engineering, and next to the P-51 Mustang it is one of my Favourites

watching films is fun too, i always look for the antenna wire/control rods just to see if it is a model (kinda sad, i know) im probably the only 15-year old i know that has seen top Gun, iron eagles, pearl harbour and the Aviator.

And no, Goirish... not nescessarily in that order...

My wife's dad used to fly in the 50's and early 60's and my wife used to accompany him to the field. After these many years, got me interested last fall. She is at the field nearly every weekend with me. Last fall she did several flights with my trainer and one of our instructors on the buddy box. She is planning on taking regular lessons once the two feet of snow is off the runway. The instructor said she was a natural so this winter I'm building some new planes for me so she can have the trainer and I can move on. One other wife has taken an interest at our club and may try lessons this spring as well. Lots of other wives come just to watch.

I'm a woman flier! I wanted to be an F-16 fighter pilot more than anything when I was a little girl...started learning Morse code at a very young age (my grandfather and uncle were pilots and let me borrow some audio tapes).

I found out a little later that I had inner ear problems and would never be a fighter pilot. It was crushing. I was strong in music and english and analytical skills in school and not as confident in mechanics so I never explored science or engineering during teen years despite an interest in it. In my early twenties I was busy in school and for some reason, very concerned with gender issues and being "feminine". Now in my late 20's, I don't give a "d*mn about how sexy something is and finally just looked up a local club, bought the expensive nitro trainer set up, and jumped in. Now, funny enough, all I can think about is flight dynamics, engines, etc.. and think this stuff is "sexy" I'm the only woman in my club, and all the guys were surprised when I showed up at a club meeting with an application and a ready to fly Hobbistar trainer, but also very encouraging, helpful, and welcoming. I've heard a good number of the men express regret that their wives don't show an interest in the hobby. Great group of guys.

I'm still shaky about all the mechanics and craftsmanship I have to learn, especially since recently getting into electrics, but I'll do it and know I'll understand it better with practice.

I don't know why more women aren't into it. I'm sure there's a myriad of reasons. But I do think it's a myth that girls don't like science and engineering, including flight.

We have a young lady who flies at our field. She is a Dupont engineer and very smart. Seems as if a lot of the old guys just want to watch her and see what see what she doe's. She showed up with a telemaster she built from a kit and it was unbelievable the help she received to getting it flight ready! After a couple months and a few crashes the Tele needed some major repairs so she flew the club trainer. The engine went bad and no one had time to sort it out. She took it to a picknic table and tore it down and repaired it. New seals and a good cleaning. It ran pretty good after she was done. I was rather impressed with her perserverance to keep flying or learning more about the hobby.

If you like the F-16 alot, maybe get into turbines or ducted fans in the future when you are ready, build an F-16 model.

always prefered the F-14 Tomcat and Super Tomcat myself, just the sleek design of them although TBH most of the F-XX jets look similar to an extent (apart from a few anomalies like the F-22 Raptor)

im hoping to get into the RAF as either a Naval Aviator, Airman or aviation engineer, so with a bit of luck i should be joining up at 16 and either getting an apprenticeship somewere or just going out into the wide world of work

i got a picture of me somewere standing infront of a HUGE rolls royce (i think?) jet engine at a museum i went to once... quite some years back, ah the memories [8D]
