I don't know why more women aren't into it. I'm sure there's a myriad of reasons. But I do think it's a myth that girls don't like science and engineering, including flight.
Women are 'incompetent' when it comes to mechanical and sciences. This is because of the way society conditions them. Example ... a small boy falls, he cries, here we tell him he cannot cry as he is a BOY. But when a little girl falls she cries and the mummy and daddy will pacify them. I think there is no reason why girls cannot fly RC etc. There is no physical handicap for them. So society has made it that the woman is a mother, child bearing factory etc etc. Of course that is her role too but why not a mother who is a F22 fighter pilot too or a NASCAR mechanic? I am sure there are women like that who are not a butch. I believe some who race etc are pretty too!

Well I have to say, I fly planes, and I'm definately not butch.

We're having a fly in soon, and they're talking about inviting boyscouts, so I've been thinking about offering at the next meeting to go around to girlscout troops in my area to drum up some interest among the girls. At least I could offer the opportunity and see if they bite. Usually, at least when I was a girlscout, it was all about cooking beef stew, crafts, cookies, camp, and horses. Nothing whatsoever about engineering or mechanics. I quit before too long and envied the cool stuff my brother did in boyscouts like build foot bridges in national forests and do real rustic camping in the mountains, hiking and river rafting in the Apps.

See the girl scouts show that its conditioning by society! Hahahahaa ... yeah I am sure girls would love to do the boys thing, fly planes and all. Anyways, if men can be great chefs and designers etc then why not women fly planes.

How many want to see GrrlsFly's pic? Shall we ask her to post? Hahahaha ...

Don't get to carried away, there tIANci. You are certainly skirting the edge of harassment here. This has been a fun thread so far. Don't ruin it.

CGr - Looks like today we live in interesting times where a REAL simple joke turns out to be seen as skirting harassment that may just ruin this thread. This is totally amazing. Totally ... I guess its best never to joke on RCU other than to tell jokes as to why the chicken wanted to cross the road. Maybe I seem to be a red neck with cartons of beers at my feet ya? This is sad ...

Alright alright. I was kind of instigating I guess. Even though I'm not offended. We'll keep it professional.
I like this thread and don't want it to turn into a less than positive discussion.

The entry of more women into RC flight is a great thing, but also apparently somewhat new. Even though great women have been in flight for a long time.

I'm kinda jumping in here with comments like those. Can't resist.

That is all a bunch of nonsense. I'm instructing a LT-40 build class for an Aerospace class at the University. We have 4 female engineering students out a class of 10. They are very competent and interested. They are just good. I enjoy working with them. It is interesting to see them adapt to the building concept and how they relate to it just like guys.

Getting women to fly in my area is much harder than in the US, gets truly hot here and there is no RC club hence no nice shed etc. So its go to a so called local flying field, back your car to its edge and hang around under the sun ... now here are some pics of the girls who have 'invaded' our field. I wonder when before they start to fly low level inverted passes! Most of the guys at the field find it very novel to see so many women flyers and actually hope more would get involved.

tIANci You obviously missed my point. I won't elaborate any further.

Bev.. thanks. I had to work late tonite. Unscheduled stuff out of town and I just got home. It's 7:50PM. She is fine with it, though. We will make up for it this weekend.. we have a nice dinner date for Saturday evening.

I've got a lady friend I met last year. She came out to the field and watched me fly one day. Within about three months, she'd invested probably $3K in planes and radio. She never did solo last year, but I had her up quite a bit on a buddy box. As soon as the weather turns nice again, we'll get back out and she'll do her solo sometime this summer!! (She's actually on this site sometimes, so perhaps she'll chime in.)

As for little girls falling down and being pampered. When my daughter was just learning to walk, we'd go out on the bike paths. She'd take off, trip and fall. I taught her to get up, brush it off, and keep on going. Now, four years later, nothing stops her!! I was hoping to get her started into RC, but she seems to have lost interest. I think she was only expressing an interest because I wanted her to be interested. We'll see when she gets a little bit older if I can get her really going.

My lady friend has absolutely no interest in RC at all other than to be happy that I do (versus other bad habbits I guess.. ). So, she comes out occasionally, but usually brings her binoculars and watches the wildlife out there. We often see turkeys, cyotes, deer, geese, and I suppose a we're gonna see an occasional black bear if trends continue the way they are.. and other wildlife. Yeah, this is New Jersey. She enjoys that part of it, so I don't deny her that. At least, she comes out and keeps me company from time to time when there are no other flyers out at our field.

Hey CGRetired.

Your lady sounds alot like mine. She goes to the fun fly's and helps register flyers and things like that. We celebrate our 45th tomorrow. So I don't think I will try to change her.

There are not alot of women that fly, but the ones that do make the most wonderful pilots, and i think that if more tried it they to would be hooked and it is nice to have familys at the field, we have many cook outs at our field with many familys that attent and we think that it is a good thing to have these different events including free drinks and hot dogs and burgers and usually brings in around 60 to 70 people at any one event, and many pilots fly all day in the events we have, it is a warm feeling to have the familys there for these events, and cook outs. Also prizes are drawn at the end of the day, nice prizes that shop owners and the clubs put out and sell many tickets.

You know, they also make good truck drivers, ( I've taught a few ) I think it's because they have a soft touch and dont try to " jam " thing's around..

[sm=biggrin.gif] haha. That's one of my biggest problems, beside nerves; Im always yanking the sticks around and over correcting.
One of the guys at the field says teaching women to drive tractors is a lot easier than teaching men, because they seem to really listen and remember instructions and go step by step, instead of diving in deaf and blind and hot rodding the thing around as soon as they jump in.

*shrug*

I wanted to say, I've been thinking that if a guy's wife isn't into rc airplanes it isn't necessarily just cause she's a woman. There's a lot of men who aren't into rc airplanes either. I've tried a lot to get my boyfriend into this, and he thinks it's interesting, but it seems like he's only interested enough to look at the planes if I show him pics or say "yeah that's , cool." And this is someone who's into (non-moving) models, electronics and mechanics.

I guess the love of flight is a very specific interest at the heart of the love of rc airplanes which is a subcategory of RC in general.

Not everyone's going to have it.

Different cultures, different opinions.

My wife is interested in a try at the buddy box but that is about it. She's happy for me when I build and go flying since it's my main hobby and I enjoy it.

I have a five month old son I hope to get hooked one day. If our second child is a girl, I'll see if she's interested as well! Done right, I think building and flying is an excellent educational opportunity for kids.

somegeek,

Thats why I decided to get a Guillows 500 series Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Since I'm farely new to this hobby, I thought a Guillows would be very helpful and give me a feel for building, which I may be doing a lot of in the future. My dad supported this idea 100 % I don't think I would've gotten this far in the hobby without him.

Hello Boys and Girls

I'm new here and starting flying again after a few years away from it. My husband taught me to fly with an old timer he helped me build but I was never particularly confident or at ease with flying. I went on to a "Star" trainer which we electrified but I lost the plot on takeoff after it fishtailed all over the place and I decked it. I decided I'd quit before I killed someone! and have spent the last couple of years learning to paint and airbrush.

I decided I'd like to give it another go but with some flight simulator training first this time to gain my confidence. We bought a simulator only about a week ago and I'm loving it. Hope it's not false confidence but I'm really keen to get back and give it a go in the real world again.

My husband builds and now has a cnc machine which makes building so much faster and more fun with everything fitting together perfectly. I'm really enjoying learning 3d cad drawing and am currently drawing up a plane which will become my "Sunday flier" for a while. It's a Citabria Pro fuse with a Mighty Barnstormer wing - pictures of an earlier model. All electric of course!

Anyway, just thought I'd say gidday and add to the women's RC world.

cheers
Patti
