Classic Pattern Event in Chicago...2010?
#126
Here is my newest Kaos. It's in St. Louis where I work and will fly it at the Chicago Classic pattern contest 2010 in St. Charles, Illinios next week. This one is another ARF Tower job that I adjusted the film trim and has an OS 55 AX and an NOS Futaba T6XA Super that I bought off of eBay for 100 bucks in the original, nearly untouched box with servos and rx. Works nicely.
I'm about to leave for Buder Park field for it's second outing before I go on a trip tomorrow.

So,
Thanks for asking.
It went OK. I never did tape up the hingelines so it was a little erratic. The time helped me, but I still sucketh mightily on the sticks. Flew 5 flights.
The engine is coming in well but the 12x6 was sure making it a lot faster than I need. I can fly it at about 1/2 throttle on the tx. Any more and it gets ahead of me.
I banged it up stalling it on the last landing in the weird rotors off of the trees and gazebo at Buder Park and took it to the pad for repair. Fixed her up by 11:30pm.
I flew it at 7:30 this morning with a 12x5 and it was a little slower and a few trim items seemed to help. Still at half throttle though.
Found I had hit every corner from nose, wingtips and rudder bottom and loosened the stab so I've got to reglue it. Glad I didn't loose it.
I've got a 12x4 and a 12.25x 3.75 to try yet. I figure the more power I can run with lower pitch then it'll be more effective at climbing well over the top and give a little braking downhill. Something to try anyway. I might have ground clearance for a 13 incher.
Jason, didn't you have a 55 in some sort of Kaos recently? What prop did you use?
So Wednesday I'll tape up the hingelines and fix the tail, and go out and try, try again. I have Thursday too.
How does one hammerhead a Kaos? I can get it to go left with right rudder! Help!

Chris,
Just so you know, the soooooo was for the updates on the contest... but I'm glad to hear your flights went well and repairs were easy
We've all been there done that.
(boy I'm a fool... I thought the contest was this weekend...lol. I have it marked on my calendar all wrong, sorry guys)
The Kaos with the 55 flew with a 12x6. This motor had been on another plane so it's got a few flights on it.
Stall turns. Didn't notice anything tricky with it, but try this. When the plane starts to slow (not when you chop the throttle) slowly add some rudder in the direction you want to go. As you get slower, add more and more until you get the plane angled 45 degrees, then let go of the rudder. Should go right over.
Make sure you have some right thrust in the motor or it will be very difficult to stall right.

Mike your not to far from me, I could come down and fly that P7 once a week for you if you need someone to keep it warmed up for you. At least until the first of August.

There's a NOTAM for the Chicago area this weekend due to the Presidents holiday plans. Hopefully it won't affect the contest. Hate to see a great event like this spoiled.

There is a TFR planned for 5/27 through 5/31. It should not effect Rusty's event. The TFR will be centered at 41.47.14N / 087.34.21W, or the CGT VOR on the 358 radial at 16.6 NM. The 30 mile ring would knick the DPA airport but its circumference shouldfall east of oronthe Fox River. Let's hope it doesn't become a roving TFR if POTUS decides to wander around the burbs. Hard to know where and when if he does that.
Like a few others, I've had very little practice time but I'm going to try to get to FVAC on Friday to get a few flights in and then just go for it. Going with an old scratch built Kaos 60, just couldn't get the Tiger Tail ready.
It'll be well worth it just to see some of those flyers I watched in awe and envy three decades ago.

ALERT, ALERT, ALERT...TSA for the Chicago area does NOT effect FVAC and our event!!!!!!!!!!!
GAME ON!!!!!!!
The FVAC is just outside of this...whew! I learned of this just as I was to get on my commuter train @ 5:15AM.
A new FDC NOTAM/TFR has been issued for the greater Chicago, IL area beginning at 7:01p on Thursday, 5/27, and lasting until 5:30p CDT on Monday, 5/31. The TFR is issued for security purposes to cover VIP movement in this area. Model aircraft operations are prohibited in this area during the specific times of the TFR. Please note that TFRs are subject to change with very short notice. Check back often for the most current NOTAM/TFR information.
Timely alerts are also available on the web or on you cell phone at: Twitter.com/amagov.
See the links to the TFRs below for more detailed information regarding the restrictions:
• Area 1 (5/27, 7:01p - 5/31, 5:30p CDT)

Rusty,
Based on those Lats/Longs and the ones I looked at (just secs different), FVAC will befrom 8.25 NM to just over 10 NM miles outside of the 30NM mile ring, and well outside of the 10 NM ring. So if he moves, hope it's eastward!

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...celebrating "craftsmanship"!
The AMA Pattern NATS, used to also recognize fine craftsmanship AND great flying skill. One of my mentors won the award in the 80's with a basically all white T2A MK II. Doug Ferguson's execution was awesome! He used Monokote and had seams that were not able to be seen and covered the epoxy glass cowl with Monokote.
I brought the event back for the 2006 and 2007 NATS and involved Fly RC magazine, Thayer Syme (great guy!) to be the sponsor. The competitors liked the event and it provided recognition for those that did not "write checks" for their models.
The events allowed for "professionally built" entries because there is skill and imagination in the "collaboration" in crating a model. Maybe you built it and had someone paint and cover and you then installed the equipment. Maybe you had someone build it to your specifications, had someone build/paint it and then you completed the graphics and equipment installation.
Generally, the "best model" is selected...here are the details for the Chicago event:
Chicago Classic Pattern Championships
Concours d’Elegance
Purpose: To recognize, reward and inspire model construction, finish including interior, exterior and graphics and control system innovation and execution by awarding a “Champion†and a “Runner-upâ€.
Overview: Each 2010 Chicago Classic Pattern Championships pilot will nominate two models which they feel meet or exceed the above mentioned criteria using a paper ballot included with their competition packet. The models may be viewed on May 28th and May 29th during the official practice or actual competition. The ballots will be turned in by 3:00 PM on Saturday and the awards will be given during the awards ceremony.
Basic Guidelines:
* The builder of the model rule will NOT be in effect
* There is NO cost to enter
* Only “declared†models, either pilot’s “A†or “B†are eligible
* Only registered pilots may vote/nominate
* Pilots will nominate two (2) models
Prizes: Custom plaques will be awarded to the “Champion†and “Runner-upâ€
Event Underwriter: The Classic Pattern-Trader
Directions: Please take the time to walk around and view all of the models on display. You are to select/nominate (2) models which you feel represent the criteria mentioned above.
Please submit your ballot to the contest management before 3:00 PM !!!!

GROUNDED! Due to my youngest son having surgery last week and requiring around the clock care at home I will not be able to participate this weekend. My disappointment is matched only by my concern for my sons health ( he's doing great, I will take him to Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago Friday for post op exam). I live just 30 miles from the site so I hope to get away for a couple of hours to visit and take photos. I know everyone will have a great time and I wish everyone good luck.

I am leaving for Buder Park for a couple of flights, then to St. Charles, IL this afternoon.
Any flying at the Fox Valley field tonight?

He brought the Tiporare...wowee, wowee, wowee.
I am just finsihing up the details on the Blue Angel...freak'n nose wheel steering...the radio is being set-up for the Ten Plus Beetle, the Calypso's are flying well.
We should be at the field by 9:00 AM to make some noise and greet the guests. Thank everyone for the efforts to attend, Ron's son...my Hobbico pals who have the XFC to prepare George and Big Bird...
