Got in two flights at the Fox Valley field. Talk about field of dreams! Very nicely done.
You guys are gonna love it.
Mark Radcliff called and coached for me on my last flight. The improvements that can come from speaking with a knowledgeable flyer are amazing!

Those are really sweet looking ships! I'll have to park the ole' Kaos in the back forty! Leaving work early and hope to be there by 1pm today and get a round or two in (nice only being a few miles away). It's been a long, long time, so no laughing until afterwards. Can't wait to get there.

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships!
These guys came here to fly and from 9:00AM until after Dave and I left @ 6:30...they were still flying. Tipos, Phoenix 7s, XLT, Kaos, Calypso, Blue Angel, Aurora...fast, smooth and just a great day meeting new people from all over the country.
The Blue Angel was maidened today...okay, this is a very good model airplane. The way too rare Hatori muffler fell off and Gary and Chris found it in the short corn rows!!! We got to fly it some more and it is just great.
Mike McConville brought the Phoenix 7...no one believes me when I tell them how powerful the little short stroke .61 from Evolution. Crazy amounts of power!!!
A few photos of the pilots and models...

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...exiting the box!
Wow, thirty years in the making the Chicago Classic Pattern Championships is in the books! Nineteen (19) pilots came as far away as California to participate. SPA Novice, BPA Advanced and BPA Masters with tough tight battles in each class.
The scores are posted...look how close the scores are round by round.
Concours d'Elegance Champion- Rusty Dose/Dave Guerin Blue Angel
Concours d'Elegance Runner-Up- Mike Wingo Aurora
More photos of the airplanes and people.
Items of interest...the Hangar 9 Phoenix 7 won both Masters and Advanced with Mike's orginal factory prototype model with the truly best classic pattern motor for the money Evolution .61 short stroke...my Calypso is really beginning to groove with the very impressive Super Tigre S.61 turning an APC 10 x 9, Mac's standard header and muffled pipe with about a gallon and a half of fuel I was able to get through the entire (6) minute flight!
More items of interest to follow and there were dozens of cameras and I assume there will be more posts and feed-back from participants.
Thank you to my Co-CD Dave Guerin, the Fox Valley Aero Club volunteers, the Chicago Pattern gang for stopping for help judging and all of the pilots and families who attended!!!

I'll tell you what. I think I just experienced the beginning of something really big. I met more fun loving and enthusiastic competitors than I can remember names. But I'll mention a few with thanks to all.
Fellow Novice flyers Austin Wingo and David III, and Brandon S were some young and able competitors. Hats off to you guys and thanks for the joust. Just watching made it a learning experience. Ed flying a Taurus so well was really inspiring, get the model pointed the right way and the vertical performance doesn't really matter much!
George and Mark K, thanks for the fun conversation and helpful hints especially the great calling, Mark.
I CAN"T BELIEVE I JUST SPENT THE WEEKEND CALLING FOR MARK RADCLIFF! Really, I'm new to R/C, don't know much except magazine stuff, and had never been to a Pattern contest. Mark walks up, says "Hi, is this the St. Louis Kaos?" and introduces himself saying he recognized the model from the RCU thread. From then on it was questions from me, subtle and concise coaching from Mark, and he asked me if I wanted to call for him. YES SIR! He shows me some super Masters flying with the Phoenix.
Fun days when my dear, departed buddy Don in SoCal had a contract for all of Great Planes fibreglass stuff came back; me making cowls and pants, fuselages and stuff while doing unemployed pilot duty, came back to me. Early TOC Scale models were few and our little company made a 109 inch Chipmunk. Some early TOC guys bought our models. I kept thinking I knew the name Radcliff. He dug on Phil Kraft's stuff. Yeah...I remember some guys, faces mainly...
Then Mark pulls out the Super Fli! Of course. More magazines, but at least i knew the stuff, and the Scale ships.
Mark's Super Fli and Phoenix 8 flew like the wind, ran great, and are both originals from '78 and '81 respectively so that is a testament to Mark's care of of stuff. To clean up and overhaul old models and engines and then get top performance is really something. Both models were usually one flip starters all weekend.
Very nice Mark; The airshow on contest day was Tim flying a super powerful P-38 Scale model and Mark flying the Super Fli. Mark had changed a couple of maneuvers for the airshow because of the particular behavior of the Super Fli. A really cool element was that this first year Scale turnaround model was essentially an experiment of the time, and ended up a little short on tail area, but long on autorotational ability. After the end of the TOC demo, Mark added a couple of super lomcevaks. Man, the Super Fli loves that tumble stuff! Mark and I were both laughing at the coolness of the old birds manners. Hats off to you Mark, thanks for bringing your models and being such a big part of the weekend.
Rusty has caught the vision here, I think, for a resurgence in R/C Aerobatic participation. Many participants commented about the same thing. He used the best of existing organizations elements to make a fine first showing of what Classic Pattern can be. That would be inclusive contests. Bring what you got from late eighties down, any equipment. And, lets fly a lot. I, as a Novice in class and by definition, found an easy to accept contest environment and can see it's the right thing for bringing a mass of participants into an Aerobatic Contest scenario with FUN first and COMPETITION second (well, 1 1/2?)!
Congrats Rusty and David for a great weekend of fun and huge success. Thanks to the Fox Vally Club for hosting the event with their beautiful field. WOW!

We want to give a great big THANK YOU to the Fox Valley RC Club for letting Rusty put on this great Classic Pattern contest. We know that you gave up a nice week end of flying to let us enjoy flying the contest at your field.
What a surprise to set up our canopy Friday afternoon and find out the guy in the canopy next to us was an old friend I had flown with in the 1978 Nationals in Louisiana and had not talked to for 32 years. I sure enjoyed seeing and talking to you David Phillips.
By the way there were 4 sets of Father/Son teams at the contest. What a great contest it was.

Chris' post has echoed my feelings precisely. When I met Rusty Saturday morning, I said I would love to help out but didn't think I was going to fly; Rusty said a few words and next thing I knew he was carrying my Kaos out for a quick practice flight. As my first round began, I'm pretty sure the noise from my knee knocking nerves could be heard down at Kickapoo Woods.
Getting set forthe second round, I turn around and am being judged by Mark Radcliff (more sounds of knee knocking). Imagine that, being judged by a legend from the day! I wouldn't have had the nerve to walk up to a Mark Radcliff back then, yet we sat down at a picnic table talking as if we wereordinary contestants! An absolute pleasure to meet you Mark, thanks.
Like Chris, watching Mark fly the Phoenix was simply beautiful; watching all of the guys fly, the Tipo, Curare, the Phoenix, the Tuarus a Saturn, the Kaos' (watch out for little Brandon) was just a complete blast. Talking to Ralph White about the midwest circuit like it was 1980 again, seeing Tim R. again (he was a bit younger the last time), and even Mike Mueller came out for a while (sorry Mike, I hopewe canfinsh up that chat soon). Meeting Chris, making a friend, and him calling for me and helping me out all day wasunexpected; and so greatly appreciated. Although I had two rounds with engine failures, Chris maintained a positive outlook toward subsequent rounds andkept me encouraged. I know I've made a great friend there. George too, steam gages, old chief pilots, old check airman, and back in the day flying coversation that the three of us couldn't get enough of.
The guys from Alabama were great too, thanks for all the feedback Gary.
I could go on and on you know.........
Mostly, thank you Rusty. You've brough back a relished part of RC to Chicagoland that was a huge part of my youth. Thanks to all of the FVAC volunteers too, the contest was a class act. Once more, thank you Rusty.
