Binding in the main driveshaft can rob power from the overall system...you're requiring more power to fight the additional friction.
Please don't get me wrong....I am, by no means, an expert in model helicopter flight and I am only trying to "open doors" for further consideration. I'm a mechanical engineer and I build model things of interest.....I started my technical life as a jig and tool maker for a company specialising in steam turbines in 1959 and have been ensnared in that net ever since.
If you have a friend who has an identical machine, try swapping out the Tx and Rx for a tryout to see if the speed control is bad.......you could even have a gyro problem...there are a few links in that rudder control system. Is the clearance between the motor pinion and the drive gear too tight....that will sap power and load up the speed control system.
I remember one flight and the tail was a bit wild so I landed and found thatpiece of plastic tube which holds the tail rotor and gear together was a little displaced and the rotor was breaking free from its drive gear...!!!!!
Choppers...I have a question re the HBK2.
I finished a flight yestereve of just over ten minutes in around 90 deg. still air and bright sun. When I went to remove the battery it seemed a bit hot.....it's the 1500 and I think it's a 10C 'cos when I charge it, my triton shows 1.5 amp. The Pro's were fairly warm and the 400 batteries don't seem too bad but this raised my eyebrows.
Have you found a need to cut air circulation slots in the canopy to better supply cooling air to the battery area. It's got an area each side of the lower nose which could be opened up and I'm wondering whether air slots could be cut in the "windshield".
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.....or am I being an alarmist....?
Lovely evening but 92 deg here in Kville......"but 92 deg".....???
Must begone....

Ray,
Crashcrash/Vic has a good question, is it a stock brushed motor or a brushless motor. Quickly, if it's a stock brushed motor, dump it and get a brushless motor and ESC...
A good tool would be an infra-red temperature gauge to monitor, motor temp., ESC temp and all electronic components. If done on a regular bases, it can give you a heads up on potential problems.
To start off, you started out at 90 degrees ambient temperature, so that's where the battery starts off at.
There's an endless list of what can cause a battery to overheat. Binding in any of the mechanical systems. Make sure EVERYTHING, moves smoothly. A bad servo can cause a battery to overheat, a bad BEC or ESC, a motor going on the down side. Yikes!
Even a battery that's going bad. If it's over a 130 degrees, you've got something causing the problem.
Heat related problems are one of the hardess to fine. Along with glitching.
If you have anymore details, please post.

Jay,
It depends on your flying style.. I have a host of batteries for the HBKII, 10C, 15C and 20C. Between 950 mAh and 1800 mAh.
For general park flying, the 10C is okay, but I recommend 15C. Just for the heck of it, I ran a 1800 mAh, 10C pack for about 10 minutes, (that's along time for me
). Anyway, the battery temperature was 98.3 degrees. Did piros and some circuits.
We just need more details from Ray, to help him out.
God Bless,
Dave / Choppersrule

Isn't 10c a bit light for something like the HBKII?

Oracus,
Holy mud slides, we are getting bombarded too. Two bridges out, can't see the neighbors house across the street, the rain and winds are so high. My house is about 3 1/2 feet above street level. Water was half way up my driveway. NO PLACE TO RUN, it's to late. Yuk-yuk About six inches of water in my back yard, only if I had a canoe.
Alot of main roads closed, even a few interstate highway around Indy. We've gotten about 9 inches of rain in the last 6 hours or so. It's 2 pm, stopped raining for now, but will start up again around 5 pm. Nice day for taking a nap.
I have a ranch home with full basement, so I trudged downstairs to check it out. Had water in my computer room, not much, just enough to panic.[X(] The water was coming in the basement window. There was about a foot of water in the window well. Went ouside and dug a small trench to get the water away from the house. About an hour of clean up and now, all is fine and dandy. Believe this or not, it's sooo bad, they are sending in the coast quard from Chicago to help out... YIKES! There are several surrounding counties that are in a state of disaster. Sounds like you're having a heck of slam too.
A lot of the farms are devistated, which means the price of food will go up, and of course they're predicting gasoline to hit 5 bucks by the 4th of July.
Take care my friend,
Dave / Choppersrule

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the follow up. I have so much to learn about all the interconnectedness of these beasts!
Just back from the LHS. Heli (semi) guru there says I should maybe try replacing the 3 in 1 as he thinks maybe it sounds like a gyro problem. I have a spare so I could try that. I also have an external gyro (Align not eFlight) that I might try. Those externals bypass the internals don't they? So there are a couple things to toy with.
LHS also selling off new CP Pros for $139.00 Wouldn't that be a good price just for the parts? Also might be nice to fly a 'fresh' machine now that I (sort of) know what I'm doing.
Thoughts on that?
Thanks!
Scott

OK gentlemen......
After her first flight I tore her down to check the freedom of movement in the swashplate system and now is much smoother and better. Her controllability is better and I'm getting good flight times.
My HBK2 has the brushless system (as pruchased from Jags) and she has been doing a good deal of hovering......not proper flyin'.
From that I kinda surmised there is a lack of air flowing over the battery.
I only assume that the battery (EK1-0183) is a 10C because when I set up my Triton charger for a 3 cell LiPo rated 1500mAh, it starts charging at 1.5 amps.
This morning I flew a pack sans canopy and the bettery temp felt just a little warm and not hot as it has been with the canopy.
Just to make a comparison I ran the 400 through a pack sans canopy and it's temp was lower too.
So I'm wondering whether I have an air circulation problem. The HBK canopy has two grilles adjacent to the motor and the poor battery is located right up front in "dead" air.
The top opening exposed to rotor downwash is a bit small so I think I'm going to cut the lower front of the canopy on each side to aid ventilation. I've laid it out on the canopy and I can get an opening about 1 1/2" long and about 1/8" wide on each side so I'm going to try that this eve.
We've now got a temp near 100 outside so I'm imprisoned in the house....us european types can't take the combination of heat and humidity.
"Mad dogs and Englishmen........"
Later gentlemen,
Ray
PS,
Just read about the Pros for a low price and "should I invest for spare parts" (paraphrased)
My reaction after owning two Pros is to suggest an HBK2. Don't get me wrong, the Pro is a good little machine but you're stuck with "non-changeable" electronics and replacements tend to be over-overpriced because there's only one supplier.
I believe you'll get a more friendly and adaptable and modifiable machine in the HBK2..

Ray,
For those who don't know what a sans canopy is, it's flying naked(not you, the heli) or without canopy!
Sounds like you're on to something there. One thing you're fighting is the ambient temperature, 100 degrees outside, so that's where your battery starts out at... I flew my HBK2 last night in the basement, it was about 70 degrees. After a 10 minute session the battery was only 93.8 degrees. Since yours starts out at 100 degrees, with it working the motor it will get 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the ambient. Modifing the canopy for better airflow, would be a great idea in your area. I have a Trex 450 canopy on my HBK2 and it's much bigger and probably helps air flow to boot. See if the B400 canopy fits the HBK2, it should be pretty close.
On batteries, the EK1-183 is 1500 mAh and 10C, the 0184 is 1800 mAh and 15C, the 0185 is 1550 mAh and 20C and finally the 0186 is 1800 mAh 20C.
Also, double check to make sure that your belt tension isn't to tight, if your not doing any 3D yet, a little loose is okay. I usually run mine loose. But not to where it's slipping. And it still gives me unbelieveable yaw control. with snap 90's and piros.

Thanks Chopper......
Flew both the HBK and the 400 with canopies this evening with the ambient temperature in the mid 90's.
I had cut the two slots in the forward lower section of the canopy of the HBK and they proved effective in that the "out of the machine" condition of the battery was nowhere near what it was before....or, at least, it seemed that way. Battery not swollen, motor was cool and the speed control was barely warm.
The 400 battery temperature seemed much the same.
Must see if I can grab the company's IR pyrometer for a couple of days.
Dude friend had the WIG on the lake this afternoon....pitch problems. She got into that pitch ogee curve again....climb and swoop over and over. I suggested he back off on the throttle even more which he reluctantly did and she softened up. She was peaking at about 24" altitude and way above that ground effect "layer" but once she was at about 6 to 9" she was much better....gotta get some photos before he piles her up.
Sun is going down and telescope needs to go out.

I hope you guys down in Indy are doing well. We had some monster storms come through yesterday and must have been crazy straight line winds for about 30 seconds, took out a lot of trees in the neighborhood and lost power for a while. It got black out and the rain was blowing so hard side ways you couldn't see across the street[X(] My wife thinks I'm a nut for staying upstairs and watching it all go down
I flew 2 packs through my Blade tonight with the Fut 6XAS and had 4-5 glitches[:@] I also found that I don't have enough roll with this set-up and darn near hit myself, ( I had to take evasive actions). Really hot here as well, my motors and batteries were extremely hot, more that usual. Does Jag hobbies take anything other than PayPal? It's confusing on their sight and I don't use PP.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Ray, I'm a huge nut for all things extraterrestrial! Do you know of a good telescope to buy? I'd love to see detail on the moon and maybe be able to look at Saturn and Jupiter. Any suggestions?
I flew 2 packs through my Blade tonight with the Fut 6XAS and had 4-5 glitches[:@] I also found that I don't have enough roll with this set-up and darn near hit myself, ( I had to take evasive actions). Really hot here as well, my motors and batteries were extremely hot, more that usual. Does Jag hobbies take anything other than PayPal? It's confusing on their sight and I don't use PP.I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Jay,
It was VERY BAD weather for about 4 straight hours. Lots of trees down, roofs blow away, roads closed. The good side, no one was injured. You can always fix your house. I'm like you, maybe worse, I opened my garage door and watch it for about 30 minutes, I love stuff like this, I'm a nut case too. Never did lose power, couldn't believe that.
What's up with the glitches? Yikes, evasive actions, that's not good.
I have scars to prove the helis are dangerous, I must not have been fast enough.

Jag Hobbies, I agree, it's a little confusing on payments. I use Pay Pal, so it's a snap for me, just click away. I usually get my orders in 3 business days. Jim at Jag Hobbies, takes major credit cards or even a check. Checks have to clear the bank before shipment.
Either give him a call or e-mail him and let him know what you need. A GREAT guy to work with. On e-mails, he's back to you that day or the next at latest.

Telescopes: Years ago, me and the kids would look at the moon with my telescope, it's awesome. You see the craters and everything.
With the telescope, you have to keep moving it to track the moon. Cuz it's moving!!!

Here's one site, just google "telescopes" theres hundreds to choose from.

Thanks Dave, I think I'll give him a call and see. With telescopes I'm sure there like anything else, you get what you pay for. My friend just bought a pair of expensive Binoculars and I was amazed at how clear and focused they were compare to a every day bino.

Jay,
Telescopes: Your exactly right, you get what you pay for. I know you are a NASA nut too. An love the outter space. It amazes me too.
Check to see if theres a local telescope place in your area. Don't get one at SEARS or K-MART!!!!

I sold mine years ago, and wish now I didn't.. I think it was about 1,000 power.
God Bless ya,
Dave / Choppersrule

Hi guys, I wanted to share a pic of what I've been working on. Most know that I love the Red Wings and I made a plane that tributes them. I had bought different decals and made some by cutting them out of trim material. I made my latest decals by downloading images from the net and printing them on sticker material I bought at Office Max, full 8.5" by 11". Ink from an ink jet will run with water contact so I spray the sheets with a glossy clear coat. I start with some light mists and then final coat is heavier. Let them dry, cut them out, and place them on your model. I think this would work great for heli's. I wouldn't try it on gas stuff, I'm sure it wouldn't last. If anyone is interested I'll give you more info on the sticker sheets and stuff.

Jay,
Now that is totally awesome, of course Vic isn't sophisticated about the Red Wings. LMAO

He said it, I didn't.
You know I am one for details, I see the pilot of the plane is YOU. You just pushed my button, I've been thinking about making decals, stencils, for about 2 months now. I for one, would be VERY interested in the process. All I need to know is the type of paper you purchased and step by step. Guessing, get the picture or wording you want, try on plain paper first for right sizing. Print on special paper, the apply several light coats of clear coat, then lastly a heavier coat.. My biggest question would be, how does it stick/attach to the plane or helicopter? Or is that what the sticker material does for you? This would be a big break through for me.

This stuff is pricey so yes, print the idea on regular paper first for the correct size and then on the sticker material. The stuff I got is from Office Max and is made by "AVERY". Their part number is 8665 and is labeled "Clear full sheet labels". I bought a 25 sheet package for $21. I've never been one to be able to reuse smaller portions of paper in a printer so I try to stack a bunch of design on one sheet. The label material sticks very well to a cleaned surface, I use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface before applying. I bought an can of gloss clear from Testors and it works very well. If you spray to much on your first coats it will run, ask me how I know

One other thing, price of ink is horrible and I have a photo printer. I print the test sheet on regular paper in the most basic setting to test the size. Once you are going to print the sticker, print it in your best photo print setting.
Always feel free to ask me any more questions or if anyone has suggestions, please tell!
That is me in the cockpit, a picture taken while I was sitting in the SNJ-4 ready to go. I took the picture and laminated it to a peice of 3mm thick depron foam and glue it in place. It's my favorite way to do the cockpit now
Here are a few more pics of my Texan. Again some decals are hand cut and others printed on the sticker/label material.
God Bless!

Jay,
I thought that was you flying..
I REALLY appreciate the details in applications of the Avery sticker stuff. Made my day, you did.
I have an Office Max about 1 mile away, soooo, tomorrow after work, I'll be getting some. Just two nights ago, I took off all the decals on my Lama V4, just didn't ring my bell. Kinda of a plan Jane right now. I'll be doing stuff with the HBK2 also. then the Belt-CP.
Actually, the price isn't that bad, less than a buck a sheet. Then add mutiple designs on each sheet. Not bad at all.
I have two printers and by golly-gee, they do suck up ink, doen't matter what kind you have. They sell the printers at a cheap or reasonable price and sock it to you with ink cartridges. The Ba$tards, LMAO. I've tried refilling my own cartridges with those kit things.
Never had any luck with them, always wanted to drip.... So I aborted that.
Your last post of pictures is VERY impressive. You are one for exact details, very professional to say the least. Kudos on that job.

In tropical climes
When the white men leave
Their huts.
Because they're obviously,
Definitely
Nuts
There are certain times
Of day
When all the citizens retire
To take their clothes off and perspire.
It's one of those rules
That the greatest fools
Obey,
Because the sun is far too sultry
And one must avoid its ultry
Violet ray.
The natives grieve
When the white men leave
Their huts.
Because they're obviously,
Definitely
Nuts.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.
The Japanese don't care to,
The Chinese wouldn't dare to,
Hindus and Argentines
Sleep firmly from twelve to one,
But Englishmen
Detest a
Siesta.
In the Philippines
They have lovely screens
To protect you from the glare.
In the Malay states
There are hats like plates
Which the Britishers won't wear.
At twelve noon
The natives swoon,
And no further work is done,
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun!
Such a surprise
For the eastern eyes
To see,
That though the English are effete,
They're quite impervious to heat.
When the white man rides
Every native hides
In glee.
Because the simple creatures hope he
Will impale his solar topee
On a tree.
It seems such a shame
When the English claim
The Earth,
That they give rise
To such hilarity
And mirth.
Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.
The toughest Burmese bandit
Can never understand it.
In Rangoon
The heat of noon
Is just what the natives shun,
They put their Scotch
Or Rye down
And lie down.
In a jungle town
Where the sun beats down
To the rage of man and beast,
The English garb
Of the English sahib
Merely gets a bit more creased.
In Bangkok
At twleve'o'clock
They foam at the mouth and run,
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.
Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.
The smallest Malay rabbit
Deplores this foolish habit.
In Hong Kong
They strike a gong
And fire off a noonday gun
To reprimand
Each inmate
Who's in late.
In the Mangrove swamps
Where the python romps
There is peace from twelve to two,
Even caribous
Lie around and snooze,
For there's nothing else to do.
In Bengal,
To move at all
Is seldom if ever done.
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday
Out in the midday
Out in the midday
Out in the midday
Out in the midday
Out in the midday
Out in the midday sun!

Thanks for the compliments Dave! They sell the printers so darn cheap it's almost cheaper to buy the whole thing instead of buying new cartridges.[X(][:@]
Rick, I'm not sure if I understand the poem quite right but it sounds like us pasty skinned people loved to get burned! I have a slight burn right now after watching my son's baseball tournament yesterday. I should have put some sun screen on[

Jay,
The compliments my friend, you've earned them. Excellent job. Knowing me on the Sticky Labels, it'll be awhile, this time of year, lots of outside work. But now I have some knowledge on the task, thanks for your post on that. I'm with you, Ricks post, I'm not sophisticated,, Like Vic, on this stuff.
(Spent 2 hours in 90 degree temps today, cleaning out the flippin' gutters, after our storm.)
Rick,
I'm a dipstick when it comes to poetry... Us white guys (can I say that
) shouldn't be in the sun, it'll get ya cancer of the skin.
The lady across the street is a "Sun Freak" she's in her late 50's and her skin looks like leather. Not appealing at all. Don't think my butt ever saw the sun... I'm lilly white. LMAO
The most sun I get is mowing the lawn.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=shades_smile.gif]
Love ya Rick, I'm just not into poetry,

Telescopes,
I have two....a Meade 8" Schmidt Cassegrain with about 2000 mm focal length and an Orion short tube 80 mm (Object (front) lens diameter) and about 400 mm focal length.
I have four eyepieces that I use for both a..... 5 mm, 15 mm, 26 mm and a 40 mm. Magnification ratio is the result of dividing the scope focal length by the eyepiece focal length and it follows an inverse square law as far as brightness is concerned.....double the magnification and you quarter the brightness.
With the 8" I can see Jupiter and Saturn with my 15 mm eyepiece but the moon looks better in the little one.
I have a nice Celestron equatorial mount ('cos the Meade one was rubbish) that does for both.
You need to visit oriontelescopes for a looksee but be very careful.......'tis very tempting and comparitively cheap.
Having said all of that. you're still only using one eye....for moon looking a good pair of binos do well and there are a couple of inexpensive models with interchangeable eyepieces but they need a mount too.
Flew both machines in 90 deg air and the vents do their work....now I have to order another canopy to do a decent job of it...hahahahaha.
No I will not take issue on the best performance of Mad Dogs........but let me say that I saw Dud Moore in Ronnie Scotts do it and Rex Harrison did it too I believe....does anyone remember the radio program "That's my word"....'tis broadcast on Public Radio in a few locations.....Frank Muir and Dennis Norden....what a pair.
Dinner's almost done,
Later Gentlemen,
Ray

Ray, thanks for the post. My wife had some free earned points from her job to select different "garbage". One thing was a telescope and she opted to get it, currently being shipped. I believe it will most likely do well at looking closer at the moon. I live near the country with no lights in sight and with proper bug spray, I would loved to look much further. I would certainly spend $500 or more for this. Is that a reasonable $ number to get something that I would be able to see the rings of Saturn?

Radio......
As far as seeing Saturn or Jupiter you need magnification for a start and I doubt you'll get anything to satisfy what you're expecting for the price you mention.
I would look at a refracting scope as opposed to a mirror type. Orion has some nice assemblies and eyepieces are not too pricey. Weakest part of these sets is the mount.
As I mentioned, the Meade mount was rubbish, so I bought a new Celestron one two years ago and it alone cost near a grand but it does hold the scope good and steady....the tripod legs are made fron 1 1/2" steel tube for exceptional rigidity. Most "lightweight" mounts will hold the scope assembly above the ground but their rigidity is questionable.
Lemmee know what you get but please don't expect too much from these types of deals....sometimes the marketing is better than the product.
Really, check out oriontelescopes....they sell nice stuff of pretty good quality at "warehouse" prices. Yes, some things may be Chinese but the optics manufacturing industry at the mass prodction level is very good so the quality for dollar is great although the initial cost may still be a little high.
There are some very nice Russian and German 'scopes available too.
Similar to helicopters.......!!!!!
