Rexor2,
If your only getting 6-7 minutes of hover time, you've got something wrong somewhere. Unless your battery is just going on ya.
A few things to check... Pitch, if to high, it will cause unduely stress on the motor and draw more current. Main shaft and motor pinion mesh, if to tight, also, stress. Lubricate the main shaft bearings with 3n1 oils or similar. I use teflon spray, made by Dupont, works good.

What is the best Lipo upgrade for longer flight times? I am just in the hovering stage of learning. I can hover a full pack now but would like to hover a full pack for longer
. I have the brushless upgrade as well as a DD tail. I am getting around 6-7 min of hover time before my lipo meter will start to show red led's. So what is the best battery choice for getting longer flights?

SuperSkids...gotem today. I put them on and I had to re-set everything. Trims, gain, pot, main blade pitch...everything. Changes weight and balance and moves the CG. Don't need training wheels with them though because of the wider stance.
Superskid initial observsations:
Pros:
* Wider stance
* More solid construction
* negates use of "training wheels"
* Look pretty nice.
* keeps the tail rotor out of the grass
Cons:
* weight...they're heavy
* poor assembly pictures or not enough close-up's
* assembly discription not accurate for tail vertical and horizontal stabs (if you follow the directions, you could break them by spreading them to get them onto the tail boom.
* excess flash left in the holes that had to be cleaned out before you could slide the skids through them.
My overall opinion...Good for learning to hover and slow forward flight but bad for fast flight/manuvers. The weight helps deplete my 11.1v 800mha batteries quite fast. I had to shallow my main blade pitch after I installed them to gain higher head speed to improve stability back to where I had it with the stock skids. Basically, they are $25 training wheels that look pretty, and they'll take a beating without failing. Out of 5 stars, I rate them at about 3 stars.
This is JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION...your results may vary.

Ain't that a pretty sight.....
I'd just bought the Microheli head.....those ball links are smooth but, to me, awfully tight. I'm only going by the feel of my buddy's T-rex where I can just touch the flybar and the system will move.
With the Microheli set up in my jig and a "by the book" installation of the flybar system I have to deflect the tip of the flybar nearly 3/16" before the head starts to move and it is all in the links.
I ordered a British ball end reamer for around $20 or so from rchover...they mention that it is adjustable so I'll give that a chance.
Installed new alum swashplate for cx-2 last night...she is sweet.
Later guys...

And a good mornin to all................ I finally got the Blade up and hovering last nite, finished out the one lipo and let it rest for 10 mins, then installed the second lipo and went back outside. About 2 mins into my second battery I was trying to hover and adjust digital trims and lost the bird for a second.............. Stuffed it into the flowerbed out front. Pulled a pitch link off the threaded rod........... ouch! Brought it back inside and fixed that and now I have the dreaded tail hop. I will be taking the blade grips off and examining them closely and lubing what i can then try it again. Going in late again today so will be able fuss with it for a bit. Rainy weather all weekend so won't be able to fly outside but will spend lots of time in my mini living room. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee................Blade CP!

Congrats Arrow on your whole 8 minutes of being airworthy...

Flew just the sim last night. Had the CP Pro performing pretty good. I'm starting to get to where the Pro is easier to fly (in the sim) than the CP, the CP just takes a little too long to react to anything. May have to keep an eye out for Bell Hiller conversion kits in the near future. I have a real CP Pro that needs a new frame assembly, some small parts and a set of blades. I also need to buy a lipo charger as I have lent my CX with its charger to a friend to start flying.

This hobby has it's peaks and vallies I'll tell you that. Super skids are doing OK and I'm learning to like them. The intermittent tail swing I was getting was GAIN. I tightened it up a tiny bit more, and it helped alot...the tail holds constant EXCEPT for normal rudder trim drift as the battery depletes. Arrow...whenever you get frustrated just read back from day one ALL the problems I've had. After all the garbage I went through, I've got a bird that flys instead of needing worked on. I really think all my control problems and crashing were simply the radio, and I didn't know what I was looking at. Your Futaba and CNC were SELF INFLICTED problems
, and I'm glad you got a handle on it. Proves one thing to me...people who do this hobby and do it well are very intellegent, determined, and have a great amount of GUTS. Putting a +/- $500 model into the air with the possibility of making junk out of it???? That's nuts if you think about it. My brother started nitro heli's in the 80's, my dad said he just had more money than brains (back when it cost $1500 to get a decient one that would fly).

LOL, I hear ya crash............ This blade CP is actually almost a hdx300/ CP Pro......... get rid of the 4 in 1 and pop in a 3 in 1, and its a pro. I still have the tail bob but forgot to take the feathering shaft out and check for anything goofy there. Hovered it in the living room and then took it outside, rain was just starting to fall but had the tail bob still going so set it down and came in to post.
wick................. Heres those pics of the chargers and wall adapters, ect. This is all just extra weight in the flight bag, so will be open to dickering and trades too.

I actually laid it on it's side with the superskids...didn't think that would be possible. Damage equated to re-gluing the tail boom and re adjusting the vertical and horizontal stabs...flew it twice since then...with the training wheels! I think the main rotor shaft is getting due as well as the spindle. Got a little flutter going on in flight...but not bad enough to prevent precision hovering. It still is flying excellent...knock on wood.[:-]

Crashcrash,
Superskids: It's like starting over again, with any modification it takes time to get use to it... I've got them on both of my heli, really like them. Since my last 2 disasters, both were in the basement, I now have one set up for BASEMENT ONLY and it has the training gear on. It's only a 10 X 10 foot area that has no obstacles, plus with a lot of ground effects, I only get about 10 or 12 seconds of stable flight, then the turbulence gets bad, and the heli gets a little hard to control... I set 'er down for 10 seconds to let tubulence settle and start over again..

Arrow,
Tail hops are almost 99% of the time in the grips, bad something or another. Check spindle/feathering shaft, make sure it isn't bent. Also, make sure that one of the rubber O-rings hasn't popped out of the rotor hub.

Rubber hubs in the grip were fine, the shaft is straight. I am guessing its sticky pitch links or mixing arm links. It is not uncontrollable by any means, just needs to wear in. I am no where near a stable hover yet with this new TX, but its definately controllable, The Bell Hiller mixing is way more responsive than the stock setup was. I have a complete stock setup ready to go so if I mangle this bling, I am still good with flyability. The bling has added so much weight that I had to switch to flat bottom woodies. 9.4 grams compared to 13 grams for the syms. Not to mention added lift.
With this precision head I have also found out that blade balancing is an exact art and not be trifled with. Luckily I got a brand new set of flats exactly the same weight out of the package. but I had to CG balance them and also added a little weight to one side for blade tracking. Pitch links are only full turn adjustments...not half turn like the others were. Funny how much one learns after a good tantrum!
wick........if yer looking..package sent at 4:30 today.......... They state 2 days shipped so look for it on Monday. Also will be sending you a PM. I messed up and will be sending you a extra care package to offset the difference.
Barrrick!!!!! I miss you man............ I surely hope all is well with yourself, you are a valuable member of the team here. Let us know how you are doing old friend.

Arrow,
Try lubricating all the critical points on the CNC head, and it may, as you say, need to be broken in..somewhat.
Nice pictures, I LOVE the PICTURES,, Heli looks great and I see the new shiny Futaba. Hmmm, seems to be some beverage missing from the bottole of Wild Turkey,,, Nothing wrong with that.

I ran onto the same as you...ground affect. I put the training wheels back on for basement. I can't believe I tipped it over...never done that before. I got the CG taken care of, the tail wag taken care of...now to address the flutter I see in the training wheels (might be ground affect too).
I got the J3 set for full travel on the flight controls and I got the controls zeroed to the trims on the TX. It's ready for a cruise in the wild blue. Right now, I'm going to just use the stock TX/RX combo. It's good for about 1600ft range according to what I've read. Although a cheap radio...it seems to be glitch free and works like it's supposed to....I'll wait to put the AR6000 in it and use the DX6.

LOL..........I knew you would catch the missing liquid.............. Beer is still in the 3rd stall choppers....... and bessie keeps asking for crash. I am grounded tonite as I have the 24 rule in effect, no liquor withing 24 ft of any aircraft or drinking withing 24 hrs of crashing one!
On a serious note........ I did lubricate every movable part on that head before I tried to hover again......... same issue. So I am convinced its in the new head and a slight binding issue with the links. I don't own a link reamer/sizing tool but do have some pretty fancy router bits that are small and maybe will try those by hand, see if I can't get a "slop free fit". If not, it can wait.
BTW.........am startihng to like the Futaba............ its the programmer that sucks!

On a serious note........ I did lubricate every movable part on that head before I tried to hover again......... same issue. Crashcrash,
The flutter you see in the training wheels is just the air pressure from the main blades pushing air downward, that's normal, nothing you can do about that.

Crashcrash,
Superskids: It's like starting over again, with any modification it takes time to get use to it...

Arrow,
Never miss a thing, it's all in the details. I'm an old Hungarian, and we do like our BEER, oh, at room temperature too.
Speaking of details, that's what the heli is all about, you have to spend alot of time when you have a problem and check EVERYTHING.
Now what you have is a process of elimintion, what part is sticky. Some steel wool or 2,000 grit sand paper would work, to smooth things out. Takes time, these tiny little parts, need exact tolerances or you'll have binding or to much slop... Go slow.
Wax On, Wax Off, all in the details,

LOL..........I knew you would catch the missing liquid.............. Beer is still in the 3rd stall choppers....... and bessie keeps asking for crash. I am grounded tonite as I have the 24 rule in effect, no liquor withing 24 ft of any aircraft or drinking withing 24 hrs of crashing one!

OMG Arrow, I laughed out loud when I seen the Wild Turkey bottle in your pic! Sometimes I turn to that myself when these heli's drive me nuts! I decided today that I will be selling my CX2. I haven't flown it in 2 weeks and am just using the charger to charge my LiPo for the CP. I think I'm going to go the Bell/Hiller route once I sell the CX2. I'm getting much better at side in hover but still don't feel real comfortable with it, especially when I'm looking at the left side of of it. I really need a bigger indoor area to fly as the weather limits outdoor flight time.
BTW Arrow,, did you ever get to the aircraft hanger for indoor flying you talked about?

Wnuk,
Keep the CX2 for rainy days, I've had so many helis and sold them, there are some I wish I had back.. My problem was $$$$, I had seven helis at one time and the cost of parts and maintaining a spare parts inventory got out of control... Now, I'm down to three, that keeps the OLD guy busy enough.

Sadly wnuk.............. no...............no aircraft hanger. My crystals didn't come in...... and with the blade being so unstable I was afraid to expose others to my n00b flyig, aka artery chopping accidents! I m at least 2 weeks away from stable flight again........... till then,,,,,,,,,,i just rely on my burboun buddy to hold me over...............heh!

Hey, brand new to this, don't even have my first heli yet. I'm going to the RCX show in Pomona Sunday, so studying up to see what to get. Sounds like you guys are having a great time learning new skills. About that rule on the two types of pilots, (have crashed, will crash), I have been riding motorcycles long enough to know that there is a third type. Those who have crashed, and will crash again. Have fun!

Was just thinking today how it would be fun to go to a show or field and watch some other geeks with heli's today. Hope you get to go lookyj. ]
Just hovered pretty much a full pack in the confines of my living room. My skills are growing a little, and my batteries are going a little giving shorter flight times.
Next check should bring the changing of the guard to Lipo technology...

Kewl wick............ u will love the lipo setup. Didn't make the Post Office today but will be going by it Monday to deposit all these dang checks everyone is giving me. Will get your package in the mail then.
Rockinghorse........welcome to the nuthouse, remeber to leave your sanity at the door. It's of no use to you in this forum.......heh. That expo looks pretty sweet but I didn't see any heli stuff there. I only looked at a couple pages of it tho. (thanks for the link lookyj)
Haven't touched the heli today, had to be on the jobsite at 10 this morning, took a couple hours longer than I figured to finish it, but the clients are happy with the end result. They just asked me to paint thier interior too. Huge house and lotsa wallpaper to remove........yuck! But, is a good time of year to be inside yet and not out fighting the elements.
I will be tearing the head down tonite to figure out what exactly is going on with the tail bob. Feathering shaft is the stainless steel one and is perfect and true. Grips, o rings and spacers all lubed and moving freely. I think I need to sand down the links to get a nice smooth slop free fit. I think rayelljay made a pretty valid point about getting the links to move freely and the whole head working as a unit, not jerking past a tight link or a burr. Time will tell, and maybe a little more of the "juice" from that ever so inviting bottle of liquid.......... I will get some pics tonite when I get back from picking up a new TV and BBQ.

Well as you can see, I got the superskids on. Note the navagation lights...they flash and they're bright. Don't seem to draw the battery too badly at all.
