Funjet complete

Video .....if youtube will load it....... to follow Thursday

I did have it flown at Joe Nall on the electric flight line ....... which was not being used much as this event is mostly glow and gas....really big planes

It did generate about 8 people coming up and asking questions

RcFlyers,

Depends how fast youwant to go. I will only tell you about Mega motors as these are the only one I buy now. I have a 16/25/2, I'm pulling 80 amps at 1250watts in it and it's barely warm when I land.
For 6 s I would go with any 100amp ESC...Hobbycitty has decent ones. Here goes motors:

1-16/25/3 2200Kv about 150 mph
2-16/30/2 2130Kv about 150+
3-16/35/1.5S 2200KV CRAZY FAST
4-16/40/1.5R 2270Kv INSANE FAST

Not sure about how long a stock airframe would last with the last 2 but I guess the Ultra would hold up without too much CF!!?

alex_scratch_built,

16/25/3 is a 1700KV motor.
16/30/2 was tested closer to 2225KV by me.
16/40/1.5R was tested closer to 2300KV by me.

I think depending on prop size that people want to run and limited airflow in a Funjet, it would be great and safe to go with 16/40/1.5S if 6S is the goal....similar to it with a bit lower KV would be 16/35/2 (one of these is sitting on a dealer shelf in USA)......16/25/3 on 6S has been done on smaller 6S packs and reported at 150 MPH just like you said.

***The motors you listed can swing decent prop at high speed on 6S but airflow to cool motor is lousy in Funjets.........then again some people want to run 4.75X4.75 props at insane RPM. I'm not sold on that but if that is the goal maybe the 2200-2300KV motors that you listed could get by in a Funjet.

I rather see 5.5X5.5 as opposed to 4.75X4.75 if trying to get to 180 MPH range....because I'm not so sure that the little prop can make enough thrust to overcome the drag of the airframe at such high speeds.

___________________________________

blkz2801,

The two dealers in USA that can order any of the regular or special motors are New creations RC in Texas, and Efflux RC in California.

Efflux would ship to other countries...he (Gary) has a little better prices and quicker reactions to orders.

New creations (Kirk) has the 16/35/2C 5mm shaft in stock as of 2 days ago.

New motors could be built and delivered by manufacturer in Europe in 4-5 weeks or so after the dealers make the request.

16/35/X $135
16/40/X $145

Letter “C†means 5mm Combat shaft, which ensures no bent shafts unlike other motor manufacturers.....usually free option, or at most extra $5 pending dealer and which motor such as 16/25/X

PM me for links and to get my attention.

ALL 28mm diameter MEGA motors can get the “E†option which means the motor will get 5mm longer rotor/magnet to lower KV by about 6% while maintaining same winding. This is roughly a $10 option.
For example 16/30/2EC will get 35mm rotor (to lower KV 6%) and it will be 5mm Combat shaft.
**At this point 16/40 will not have “E†option because MEGA does not want to build 45mm rotors.

chippedprop,

Great video my friend....Keep them coming.

Did you fly at JOE NALL event? It was great hanging out with you there last two years.

Too bad we attended on different days this year. I went Monday and again on Friday.

You intended to go Wed (I think) , I hope it didn’t rain that day...or not much.

Did you fly at JOE NALL event?

The answer is YES.......well I didn't fly the plane as you must reg. ...but i had one of the club members-Bradley Petty run it thru 2 batteries on the electric flight line.

The plane generated about 8 people walking up to see what was flying and had many questions as the plane was running in the 140 mph range on 4 cells.

Joe Nall is primary a gas/glow giant scale fly in...........this year over 950 pilots flew ..that's a min. of 950 planes most have multiple planes.

Next year who knows...I may fly the plane......Talk about nerves..imagine 400 plus people watching you fly, and with 8-10 planes in the air all the time......huge planes

Gryphon,

I should have let you answer, You have much more knoledge than me in everything about those Mega motors.
Thanks for all that great info.

So what is the best 16/40/xxx for a 5S setup in say the FunJet Ultra?

alex_scratch_built,

Help from everyone is best policy....

The answer to your question depends on what size prop you want to run.

There are 2 camps of thought by Funjet folks:

one says that the faster you go the larger prop you will need, the other thinks small prop like 4.75X4.75 can do it all at any speed and can overcome the drag at higher speeds and has less torque roll.

So what are you looking for?

1) What level speed with no wind?
2) Is that after a dive?
3) What size prop?
4) What size battery? (complete specs)
5) Is 6S battery at same weight an option?
6) Is this just for discussion or are you seriously after building it?
7) How much throttle control will be used or you want full throttle nonstop?

Answer all of the above questions please.

Default RE: FUNJET

Ok so, I did not make up my mind yet on the next project but I like those 16/40/xxx.
This week end, I tested my pseudo FunJet(Thunder Tiger Velocity II) with a 5S 2650mha 40C pack on my 16/25/2 mega running a 5x5 apc prop. On a fresh battery, I pulled 1765 watts. Yeah speed is getting there but I think I'm just starting to explore my addiction. People at my field said...Man your the fastest here but they compare me with guys flying senior cadets??! And I think to myself darn I wish it was twice as fast...

So here are some answers:

1) What level speed with no wind?
Assuming I'm reaching about 150mph with my setup, I would not mind going 200+

2) Is that after a dive?
I mostly fly the speed run so I guess Loop, straight is what I would be happy with

3) What size prop?
5x5 or similar. I have tried 5.25x6.5, 4.75x4.75, 5.5x4.5, 6x4.
I don't mind going a bit bigger but I would not hand launch a funjet on anything bigger than 6 inches

4) What size battery? (complete specs)
5s 2650mha 40c/50c Flightmax

5) Is 6S battery at same weight an option?
For now I would prefer 5s since I have 2 brand new packs but of course I would do it in the future

6) Is this just for discussion or are you seriously after building it?
I am considering the airframe options. I will get a FunJet Ultra for sure but I am considering airframes with much less drag for ultimate speed. F5D like the Excite of the Jibe II maybe.

7) How much throttle control will be used or you want full throttle nonstop?
With my current setup, I use throtle control very wisely. I put heatsinks on both my motor and my speed control as it is only rated at 80amps. I only go WOT for bursts of say 10 seconds or less.
I think I can restrain myself from being all the time at WOT if that can make my electronics and motor last a long time.

I guess for now I will do a bit more research on airframes and ask you this...

If you were to buy a 16/40/xxx, for the ultimate speed funjet, which one would it be and what would be your setup?

Hey thanks in advance

I will post a vid of my 5s setup soon!!!:-)
<div id="TixyyLink" style="overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; border: medium none;"></div>One last thing. Yeah the low speed passes are nice but I think that what gives me even more satisfaction is doing a level pass with no motor at say 70 or 80 mph, at the end of the runway I pull up and then nail it!!!. The acceleration that thing has going vertical with 800watts/pound is just nutts. I makes me grin each time! It gets very small, very fast!!!

alex_scratch_built,

Power comes from battery. To make big power, you need more battery.

You want to make a lot of power but your 5S pack is not so big.

Your 5S pack has a bit more power delivery capability, but not your ESC

Your ESC is of no more use....if it is Castle Phoenix 80A then it has a bit more breathing room.

16/40 is capable of *****g out one of your packs and your ESC without too much trouble if propped good and hard.

Question to you:
1) Will you be able to run both packs at same time in parallel as larger 5S-5300 40C?

2) Will you buy higher Amp rated ESC?

For high speed you need bigger than 5" prop.....we can design around 6" but forget about 200 MPH setup even if you completely change your packs and ESC.

For regular Funjet 180 MPH should be possible in level flight.....190…maybe.
200 MPH, I don't think so….not without some previous dive.

Now if you will be doing a dive before going level sure 200 may very well be possible....Don't plan on below 6"….if below 5.5†diameter you will not have much of a chance.

Middle ground: we can try and design around 6" if possible......remember Funjet has poor cooling air flow to motor….due to your restriction to run 5S, we may be cornered into smaller prop.

Give me more battery such as parallel and better ESC, I will deliver the big watts….You just should not want too small a prop, or its thrust may not be able to overcome the drag of the airframe beyond certain speed.

Remember the cubic rule of power required to speed.

190MPH / 150 MPH = 1.266 times the speed is desired
1.266 cubed = 2.03 times the power is required.
Your single pack cannot do it.
Motor will need to handle twice the AMPs as your current motor.
16/40/1.5R or 16/40/1
the 1 turn on 5S will be micro size prop.
So you have only (1) choice 16/40/1.5R and whatever prop it can handle.
At max AMPs in Funjet: You will need great throttle control.

Maybe lowere your goal a bit....remember the dive will help in your speed in level flight....not sure what to tell you.

Give comments....but your plan above is not going to be doable without more power being delivered to ANY motor....even best 36mm motor will need to be fed more juice than (1) of your packs can do.

Funjet can fit both packs.

{ EDIT: ***Finally, maybe the reduced drag of Funjet ULTRA will be the needed ticket for your 200 MPH pass. }

Thanks for all the great info Gryphon but it's making me realize that I should probably change threads!!!

I will get the FJ Ultra for sure...I just love puting LED strips from HobbyCitty and letting them rip all night long...

But for ultimate speed, there are some better airframes that I will consider(F5D probably).
I also have a Picco .90 DF in box engine that I would love to make a speed prop plane for.

I guess that what I am trying to say is that I will eventually got past 200mph but probably not with a FunJet!! Its just too draggy

Sorry if I'm talking about other airframes in the FunJet thread...I will stop now

Hey B1mMan. I cant wait to see your video with your 160 Ice controler and whatever power setup you are going to put in your CF FJ.

Gryphon, do you have a youtube channel? I would love to see some of your setups

Cheers guys!!!

comeing soon!!! I would have got my batt's but I spent my money on a cnc router table so I can make nicer molds and up my building ability
I have also been working on a Carbon fiber prop to handle more rpm wattflyer's 100mph club dopplered it 11mph faster down wind and 2mph faster up wind VS a APC prop

Now had you planned around a good size 6S, you would have had a great chance with a Funjet such as theb1bman's C.F. Funjet

I spun APC Sport 6X4 at past 42,000 RPM on a MEGA 16/40 on 3000W and motor was not maxed. [sm=thumbup.gif]
Using Eagle tree 150A V3 logger.

Another guy with a fuller and smaller pack got 43,000++RPM on his ICE ESC.
Calculate tip speed. [:-] ...over 775 MPH tip speed....that is super Sonic...cannot be good for health of prop or people around.

Also compare rated RPM against APC specs of 190,000 / diameter = 190000 /6" = 31,666 RPM limit

alex_scratch_built,

Here is the video of what you asked for:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANdbBPx7ZcQ

Go ahead and do a Doppler of the RPM and tell me what you get for RPM.

The wing should have better airflow to cool motor versus a Funjet....notice his added scoop in front of motor...that scoop was needed in order to make that setup work for him.

Video looks better in 720 HD, but that way you need to wait longer for it to load.

Enjoy

Thanks for all the great info and video Gryphon,

I have too many projects in the works. I'm building a scratch built Screamin demon.
I will probably end up making a custom design all carbon fiber ''something that flies very fast'' and eventually go with 10 to 12S and a 150 or 200amp ESC driving a mega edf120 or something around those lines.

I guess foam just won't make it to the speed I want to go next?!?

But as soon as the Ultra is available...I'll get one...HEHE

on highendrc web sight it says 4.75 x 4.75 but if you have a watt meter i would try 5.5 x4.5
i had the 2w and put 600 and 800 watts to it and it held up and it's only rated for 450watt so if you go over the 750 yours is rated for no big deal as long as the motor is not get hot
hope your batt can handle it
whats your c rating i hope 35c or 45c
i just ordered the 1w-30 today 1400watt motor
try this on 4cell before i go making it a 7 or 8cell set up with 2500 watt or so
i want to see how the carbon fiber funjet handles the add weight of a 4 cell 5000 45c batt before i go putting two of them in there
