I went back to the stock muffler because of some problems with the J-tec. The people at J-tec said the would replace it free of charge. They are a great company. Here is my plane now.

What kind of problems? I just bought one like the one you had.

KW, The muffler leaked from every weld and wouldn't stay tight. The guy at J-tec said that a few mufflers went out with to thin of pipe and welds. He also said that they would replace it for free. No questions asked.

Hello Guys!

I'm planning on buying a DL-50, to fit a Krill Katana 2,2 m.

Only problem is, that the katana weighs about 8,5 kg. RTF. (About 18-19 lb)

So therefore I was thinking of using an ES-Compisite tuned pipe, to save weight and to increase the power... But, does the DL-50 really get more power with a tuned pipe?

Maybe I should say that I'm planning on flying some hadcore 3D.

My Evolution 26GT has much more power with the tuned pipe, than with a stock muffler.

Many Thanks.

Hey Paul,

What kit is that in your pics? I've seen it here before, just have not asked what it is. It's pretty SWEET! May have to get one of those next.[:

Thanks,

Its an SD-models 30%. Check out http://www.valleyviewrc.com/ Tom has them all.

Also TBM carries them. http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/

Has anyone found that they had to reseal the carb mount? I just got mine and the mount looks pretty dry (no sealant/RTV) between the carb body and manifold? Also, for those that have mounted inverted, did you keep the carb in its original setup or rotate it 180 degrees?

Thanks,

I never saw any reason to reseal the carb. I also left mine mounted the way it was, but some others in here have rotated it.

All they have between the carb and the reed block is gasket, and between the reed block and the case is another gasket. no sealent required. If you have to remopve the carb for any reason be very careful not to over tighten as you can crack the reed block, causing an air leak that cannot be seen, without inspecting very closley.

I have left the carb as is on both of mine.

Kristian,

Three things stand out in the case.
1: the plane weight is a bit out of the typical 50cc range
2: You are planning to buy a DL (which saves money), but also want to get an ES Composite pipe (EXCELLENT pipe, by the way) which is somewhat expensive
3: The DL alone is light but the addition of a pipe adds a bit of weight to the system, and also your power demands require the engine to operate at a higher output setting than typical.

If I were you (and this is only MY opinion) you will be better served buying a 3W, ZDZ or DA 80cc/85cc engine. The 80cc engines cost about the same as your engine/pipe plan and the weight increase is very slight.

For instance, my ZDZ 80 on a pitts muffler, including all hardware and ignition, weighs about 2300 g. The DL including all hardware and ignition weighs 1620 g, plus another 250g or so for the pipe and header, so approx 1870 g. This nearly half kilo may seem a big weight addition over the DL, but remember the 80cc engine will spin a 26" prop at roughly the same rpm as the DL will turn a 23". This is a HUGE increase in thrust.

Putting a pipe on the DL may give you a nice power increase, but the more power you extract from the system the more "peaky" it may become. All-out power is nice but 3D really requires instant engine acceleration and a linear power curve.

For the record I also have a DL-50 and like it in my 15# Extra. It is just a bit weak for hardcore 3D in a 19# plane.

Does this help at all?

Brett

I have decided it would be a good idea to put an air damn just in front of the air exit on the cowling for my Extra to get better cooling for the DL. I have seen Pe Rivers articles on this subject but I am left with one question. What is the best way to build abd attach it? I have some very thin aluminum sheet that seems like it would work but I am not sure how to attach it to the cowl. Should I reinforce that section of the cowl with balsa or lite ply and just bold the air damn on? Does the reinforcement need to be glassed in?

Thanx in advance for any suggestions.

In the UK, we need to budget for a quiet pipe along with the engine. The Pitts and wraparound are too noisy.

I suspect that this is true throughout Western Europe.

What prop does a DL run on a (long) pipe - 24*10? But it's a big plane:- 28% & 86" & 19lb [sm=50_50.gif]

Hello Everybody

Many thanks for those repiles.

@BTerry:

I know that it is a bit "wrong" to buy a cheap engine and then add an expensive pipe. But, here in little Denmark, we have some very tight noiserestrictions, which does that the use of mufflers such as the one supplied with the DL-50 just isn't an option. So we have to use either a canister or a tuned pipe, to keep down the noise. A bit sad, but thats just the rules [&o]

About putting a bigger engine in the Katana, you are right, but wouldn't it be overkill? Maybe the plane would destroy it self caused by the vibrations from the 80 cc?

After I typed my response I realized you are in Denmark and probably have tight noise restrictions. That being said, you should probably look at a something like the MVVS 58 with its cannister system.

I have no idea how the DL will respond to a pipe but it may work well. Setup is critical and if the system is too short (or too long) it will ruin the power output. I fear the system may be too long for your plane.

It is worth a try, and the plane will fly fine, but might not have the power you desire.

The DA and ZDZ 80cc engines I mentioned are SMOOTH, I wouldn't worry a bit about vibrations damaging the plane. Power is a different story but you can always throttle back.

A Cannister system that fit's the DA 50 will work on a DL as well, It will reduce the noise substantial amount.

Have you used one on your engine ? If so witch one? I would like to know was it a tuned pipe system or canister?

If it was a tuned pipe system how long did the header turn out to be?

Hey Guys,

Got my DL50 last week. Putting it in a GP Ultimate Bipe. What type of Optical Kill Switches are you running? I know some are using the Smart Fly, but I thought there were some other options . Anyone have any input?

Thanks,

TH
Valley View RC is now selling 42% Products Opto-Kill Switch and all of there other items.

I have used a KS cannister (86 V4) on both my DLs. One is the rear exhaust and the other the front exit, performance on both has been very good and people have commented on how quiet it is! Getting 7200rpm on a 3W 23x8, fully run in DL on synthetic oil 50:1.

Can we talk props for the DL? I've got a warbird P-40 and i'm wondering which would be a good size for 3-blade prop (and where to find it) and also 2-blade as well. I've got a 21X10 which i'm thinking should give me good top end speedand high RPM's, at the cost of static thrust which i'm good with on a warbird.

If you are looking for a good 3-blade with a little thickness, take a look at Aircraft International.com and go to their props (under products) for the Biela. I ran one on my Cap and it pulled with speed. You can paint right on the top of the current paint scheme without prep work.

Thank you for your answer.

I'll think about it, I just don't want a plane that is underpowered nor one which is too heavy either.

I think I have to consider to buy a lighter plane instead, maybe the EF Yak 88' og the SD-Models 30% Yak. Maybe the weight of those is more suitable for the DL-50.

When that is said, I still have in mind to try the Es-Composite Tuned pipe option for the DL-50

Thank you for your help through your replies.

Hi, I got mine from Ebay for 360 all inclusive delivered in tiny Belgium. It must have cost them a buck to find it on the map.
Was in a party mood and had a few so I took a bid on it still with a flinter of GF45 blues in the back of my mind.
So here it is.
At that time (2 years ago in the middle of the GF45 scourge) I guessed that IF the chinese get the importance of QC established they might break bones under the western modell engine manufacturers and I , reading DL50 reports, tought this may be the time.
My first impression of the engine was next to perfect. Cilinder chrome very smooth, no scratches on the piston and neet castwork.
Only little minus was the spark thread which I think is casted and not machined so a little carefullness here is advised.
Next day was visual inspection at my club. Everyone found it had a nice look but they were understandebly sceptic .
It costed 250 Euro's while a DA50 in Europe 6-bloody-hundred. So it propably would break down on the first flip.
Next day running in. Put it on the stand with stock muffler on it( just to break in because being loud in Belgium is a hanging offense).
It started very easy, ran very smooth and let it continue for an hour or so with intermediate full throttle passages.
And it didn't break down.
AT ALL.
Got a ZDZ50NG, very nice and reliable engine, got a GF45, very beautiful engine and after straightening the crank and fastening the bearings I have some plans for the future with it.
Guys at the club have DA50's which run next to perfect although some broke down( litrally) but got mended for free thanks to the excellent but costly warrantee by it's importer. Other's have His Majesty 3W, no comment about that one.
Do you hear me being happy? wel I am and report you back the moment it stops.

My plane is the Skyshark P40 max weight 23 pounds ( I haven't built it yet, working on it), 82inch W.S.

AWCflyer,
thanks for the link, I'll check those out. sounds like you like them. what size prop on what motor were you setup with?
