Also one of the guys that i fly with says that for new engines you shoud not 3D it much because they are still breaking in and that puts a lot of pressure which means extra heat. I have only glow 3D planes is the same true for gas?

...yes

Prolonged hovering, etc isn't advised on brand new engines. Use an appropriate oil mix, fresh gas, take the time to tune it, baffle for proper cooling, and heat cycle the engine (fly normal flight varying throttle, and let completely cool down before next flight). This will efficiently break in the engine.

Just a quick post on the status of my DL50 in an AeroWorks 50cc YAK. 2 gallons thru it with 32:1 Lawn Boy ashless. 3W 22X8 prop. MTW header and MTW75K canister, 80 degrees at 900 foot ASL. I get 7,475RPM. GREAT response from idle to WOT. Going to switch to Amsoil at 80:1 and switch the prop to a MEJ 22X10 carbon to lower the noise further yet. I'm much quieter than most of the 4 cycle planes and for sure all of the 2 cycle ones.

GREAT ENGINE!

Great rpm for such low time. We are getting from 6600 to 7100 up here, depending on the engine. We are at about 1400 feet.

I am using the Vess 22A on my DL50 Ultimate and it is very quite. FLys the Ultimate JUST RIGHT. Another guy at the flying field was running a smaller 45 size gasser with a Zinger and it ripped so loud I though the engine was coming off. He was really surprised as a I made a full bore low pass with no prop rip. He had a couple of Vess' in his box but hadnt run cause he thought they didnt look right.... hmmmm. If they hadnt been drilled for his motor I'd of snatched em right up.

I have three gallons through mine now and it has been nearly flawless. Had two flame outs and both time were a few seconds after pulling to a vertical. It would restart and run just fine afterwards. Probably a burp of air is only thing I can think of. Vess 22A and I am switching from LawnSLudgy to synthetic next fillup. I haven't touched the needles since the first half gallon of fuel. Runs at about 7250rpm. Just like running my OS nitros.

Wow, mansoons have rolled into phoenix and man it is humid hear. This morning we were pulling 95+ with high humidity. Man did the engine not like it. Had two dead sticks before i richened the high and low end a bit. It ran rough but stayed running at least. I still had unlimited verticle but no where near as nice as when there was no humidity last week. I guese the lesson i learned is to check you tune every day at the field

Cambo you are right. We have 100% down to 0% and the temps are anywhere also. And i have learned that what works one week will not work the next. It seems to be worse with my glow engines (mabye the nitro has an effect there). I now tune mine before everydays flying and after i am done i run it dry and turn the needle valve 1/2 turn out to set up the next times flying. Not with my gas but all my glows! My gas engine i check and tune only if needed. I am patiently waiting on my dl50 to get here. It has a nice new home in a GP 330s waiting for it. I have a brillelli and a 40 spe can't wait to try the big 50 in a pure 3D plane!!

You will really like this engine, and it is almost on the money right out of the box. The last few engines we have sold has not needed any adjustment to the needles according to the feedback we have received. I think the factory is spending a little more time on the testing before shipping.

J Tec and Bisson makes mufflers for the DA engine and they fit the DL 50 as well,
Bisson would be the better one,

You may end up having someone modify a muffler for you to get it to fit in that small space.

I'm having the same problem...With the same setup ...B&B ( Bennett) says he has a muffler for the DL.....Even that will require some cowl cutting...

There is a guy that makes scale P-51 exhausts for all sorts of engines. Quite expensive, but has scale outlets, etc. Might post in the "Scale" forum and get the name; you sure aren't the first one to tackle the in-line engine problems.

Thanks for the help. Do you think the DL 50 is a good combo for this plane.

I would advise against it as the initial prop; IMO, too much airload....others may have different opinions. If you have to use a Vess from new, I'd spend the bucks for a 22. You may really like it. After it gets broken in well, the 23A probably would be fine.

TOYMAKER in post #2126 talks about the 22A. That would be my choice.
