Fuselage bottom framing, Ruder and Elevator linkage.
It is really starting to look like something now. The fuselage has left the nest (building board) and is up on the stand. I first got the two filets in at the end of the fuselage by the fin. I made up some contoured supports to glue inside the fuse for the stab. I used the jig for the profile, then epoxied them in.
I am getting my first look at the way things will go together on the elevator and ruder linkages. I was hoping that the ruder hinge pin would clear the elevator torque rood, and it did.
The cutout in the ruder is a rough cut and will get cleaned up as I go.There is plenty of room for the elevator arm inside the ruder pocket.
I moved the elevator control arm as far right as I could so it will clear the hinge pin. Now I can remove the ruder anytime. I am going to hook up the servo for the elevator to check the throws and make sure every thing is working properly before I do any more work on the fuselage. I like to have a working linkage anytime I do concealed linkages before it gets berried. I am not sure where the servo will be. It may be on its own tray, and once I balance I will set it permanently. I am not sure yet on what I will use for a push rod. The default is a 4-40 sleeved by carbon fiber. I may go with a 2-56 inside a carbon fiber tube with carbon fiber sleeves glued in at the formers. We will see as it goes together. The elevator arm has plenty of throw up and down and I think I have the position so I will glue in the torque tube tonight.
I also need to set all my sleeves for the tail wheel and ruder pull pull.

Ruder and Elevator linkages.
When I framed up the ruder I put in some additional pieces to create the pocket for the elevator arm. I will clean this up and reinforce it as I go. The arm for the pull pull will sit on the bottom former that starts the solid block. That is on tap for tonight.
Also I will make the bottom hinge.
I will use 3/8 balsa to create the bulge that will match the bottom section of the fuselage. I will cut the radius out of the ruder from the bottom of the pocket just in front of the hinge tube, then glue in a square block and after the bottom of the fuselage is finished I will sand it down to match, and then do the radius again.

Bottom Fuselage framing
I got all the formers glued in with exception to 5-B. I did not want to use CA for the crutch, F1, 2 and yellow glue I think would not be best for this so I went with 30 min epoxy. It was a challenge because 30 min epoxy has about a 5 min working time (un-thinned). So the clock was ticking. I fitted everything dry and made sure it was all good then I went for it. I barely made it. The glue became stringy as I set B3 but it all came out great, strong too I did use CA for the rest of the formers.
It appears that B9 is close to the tail wheel and needs to be moved or cut. I remember reading that somewhere. The manual doesn’t talk about that, I think (really haven’t read it So what are you guys doing here?
Also there are two B7 formers. There is no mention of this, are you suppose to double them up or is that a typo in the cutting?Did I miss something!
I am not going to go any further with the fuselage until my carbon fiber sheets come. I want to do all my reinforcing next. It shipped yesterday and should be here on Monday. So I will tinker and fine tune.

Back to the Ruder
Everything is all lined up and working great. I am so pleased with the way it is turning out. I do think I will trim about an 1/8” of the ends of the elevators before I glue the tube in. Looks like plenty of throw on the ruder.
I will measure the throws tonight. Not going to be 3D Edwin
Now that I can move the fuselage around and I am not under pressure gluing the stab in I found the discrepancy in the measurements that was giving me fits. On the right side of the bottom stab saddle it is in just a little, maybe an 1/8” This is easily fixed as I shape the bottom and I will just add some material to blend that in. You can see the line I drew in.
I am test fitting the stringers to see where I need to cut the additional stringers in at 5B I will be adding some hard wood to the original stringers and use the balsa for the additional stringers.

Next on the line
So I have quite a few orders floating around in the air, Callie graphics, my DLE85, carbon fiber, Mirce finishing sets, Servo city, and I ordered my landing gear yesterday. I went with the Sierra P-47 gear for the Yellow P-47 This gear is unlike the one from Robart and the one Sierra offers that is a drop in for the ARF or those that don’t want to modify the mounting. I think I can do that!
The gear I am getting is the gear on the far right, and in the second pic. It sells for $480.00
TB
So now I have a little time while I wait on the big brown truck. I ordered some servo wire and servo ends from servo city. I am going to cut the ends off the servos in the wing and solder on the wire extensions. I want to do two 6 pin plugs, or one 12 pin plug that will be mounted in the wing and the wing saddle. So all you have to do is hook the air up and set the wing in. I am planing a trip to Fry's to get some supplies and to look at plugs.

Hello Tony, impressive building... Bravo...
I have Top Flite P 47 with G 62. I enjoyed in that model very, very much.
Here is a link to my web site http://www.nsmodelers.rs/warbirds/thunderbolt-top-flite Text is on our language but there are many pictures.
On my TF P 47 I have first G 45, but model was little underpowered. When I change engine model flight great... It was 12 kg with no ballast at all... You can see that at that time I use solder iron for rivets. No Mirce products then...
Thunderbolt is great warbird. I sold my TF P 47, but now I fly another - Meister Scale P 47. Perfect, perfect model...
Thank you Tony for ordering my products. They work great, just need patience to do it right.
I subscribed at this topic. Always enjoy to watch some P 47 buildings...
All the best from Serbia

I went with these Tony, wish I had known that you wanted the same thing, it would have saved you some time soldering.

I haven't ordered any thing yet, just the servo wire and ends. I am not using servo plug in extension, so I need to solder anyways. I like that plug and I will order one for my wing. Does it look like it can be mounted? I know some of the computer 12 pin have mounting flanges.

Elevator torque rod
I set out to glue the elevator torque rod this evening. I first trimmed the elevator about an 1/8” and gave it all a good sanding being this will be the last time it is single.
I joined the stab jigs together and then tacked them to the stab with thin CA. This will give me an even surface on both sides of the stab for the elevators to sit on during the gluing proses.
I decided the best way to center the rod with the hinge pin was to glue in a piece of 4-40 rod that will seat into the hinge tube, plus it will act as a plug to keep glue from creeping into the hinge tube.
The moment of truth! I am using Gorilla glue for this task. I like the gap filling foaming action this glue has, plus it cleans up with water. It also has a longer working time then 30 min epoxy. I drilled some holes in the torque rod and scuffed it up.
I will instal some pins threw the elevator and the torque rod after I pull the elevator back off.
I know somemodelers do not like this glue because you have to baby sit it, I got time! I did check to make sure the two halves lined up, they look good to me so far.
I usually use Q-tips wet with water to baby sit the foam, but I forgot so a stick had to do. I will have a little cleanup to do tomorrow

Ruder and the bulge
I cut out the bottom block from the ruder, and I also cut out the LE just in front of the hinge tube.
Before I did the cutting I traced the profile onto the new block. I went to Hobby Lobby to get the new block, I get all my balsa blocks there.
I cut the sides from some 2”x3/8” stock I had. I traced the profile from the piece I cut out and sanded it down on the belt sander.
I used Gorilla glue on this too.
I will wait to sand it out until I get the bottom back section bone, then I will sand them both at the same time.
So I have read the manual, I have surfed the forums and I still cant figure out why my tail wheel wont fit, none of them do
My stuff from servo city came, I’m a fan for life, Tootsie rolls
I am going to sandwich the control horn for the ruder between the new bottom blockof the ruder, G-10 will do.
Next I will start fitting my servo push rod sleeves and the pull pull. I am setting the air tank in so I don't forget toleave room for it.

Onto the engine, that should be here soon and I will know if it fits or not. I have been reading about 4-blade props and it is difficult to find the right one. They tend to load the engine up so you can loos some thrust and speed. And they act like an air break too. So it may be a good thing that I am trying the DLE85, if I can get a 4-blade to work, then great. I know that the DLE55 wont spin a scale sized 4-blade and still have performance. I think you get about 25lb thrust. The prop I am looking at is the Biela 4-22x10 I will be breaking in with a 24x10 and reducing my throttle curve to not exceed 7200 rpm. I am going with the Tru-Turn spinner 1-3/4” x 2-1/4” I have used them before on my DLE55 and my Lion.
I have been talking to Mike over in the gas engine forum. Here are some pics of mikes68chargers P-47 He has a ZDZ80cc on his and in the pic he has a 22”-4 blade and the other is a 18” 3-blade. The 50cc is underpowered to swing a big 4-blade.

RE: Top Flite GS P-47 sports scale; diary of a build
TB,
Anxious to see how you make out with the 4 bladed prop. I have a DA 85 and am going to build a Ziroli P-47. Like you I don't really want to drop 500.00 for a Solo.. Keep us up to date on an option for the 85.
I am also watching your elevator set up closely. Only thing I am concerned with is the lack of independant adjustability, if one side is the slightest bit off any deflection input up or down is going to cause the plane to roll. I am going to try to enclose all linkages on my build and I am weighing out the best way to do the elevators and rudder. I have the flaps and ailerons figured out but will wait to see how you make out with your set up. I am also concerned about safety versus esthetics. I wouldn't want the elevators to fail on a 40lb plane...
Great build by the way!
Thanks

Thanks Jeff
It's a leap of faith, I think it will work and yes independent elevator linkages are best so you can adjust them, but I feel it is good and strait.
TB
Do you think a micro servo is strong enough for the elevator trim flap?
I can always use the trim flaps on the elevator to fix any difference, right. I have already been drawing up the ideas I want on the ailerons and flaps. That is just around the corner

Tony,
There are some great ideas on a couple of scale sites for elevators and flaps. Scale hinging designs are out there also if your so inclined. Really enjoying your build and want to get some more detail on your scale hinging on the tail... Like to talk to you about it if possible, my email is [email protected]
Thanks again
