Hey guys - I've been flying my Mid-Star40 for, well, seems like decades. There's a 4*40 available "locally" (within 70 miles from me). Just wondering, anybody know about the performance differences between the 2? Thinking seriously of going up there tomorrow to get it. Wouldn't be a replacement to the Midstar, would be an addition to it.

Good flying plane, floats easily, and performs well. I'm considering a 4*60 (or 54 ARF) to put one of my 91's on. I have a 4*120 with DLE20 and its a good flier, the DLE gives me fits so it doesn't get flown much.

Any way i love all my 4*'s. almost as good as the hog.

I thought so too, but last time I flew it was about a week or so after 2015 flyin where I thought it was running good. I would start it, it ran great on the ground, I would take off and fly around and then coming in to practice touch and go's it would die. Tried adjusting a little bit, think I had it good, take off, fly around and same thing. Been sitting in the trailer ever since, I don't think I even took it out last year.

You had it out at sig but I don't think you flew it. Kind of a bummer. Wish I could give you a hand. But it's hard to do when i can't see or hear it run. Hope you figure it out the 120 is a great flyer

Never had or flown a Mid-Star 40 but I do own a 4*40 with a OS FS-52 on the nose. I've had her for 10 years or so and she's a relaxing easy plane to fly at low power settings yet is lively when the 52 cranks up! She's one of my favorite planes in the stable and worth a 70 mile drive to pick her up!

Today I did some work on the Cub that I started making into a Biper Cub and failed to get the balance correct. The lower wings need rebuilding, but the rest of the plane had little damage. Waiting on the resin to cure where I repaired the cowl so I can sand and repaint it. Then I can balance it as a regular Cub. Only difference is the struts are not under the fuse, but mid fuse, and the lower wing attachment is still exposed. Haven't decided if I want to make new scale struts and cover up the attachments, or fly it as is and repair the lower wings and try again.

I think you should keep trying it would be cool to see a cub bipe.
If this helps. Most of the bipes i have flown the cg. Is usually the leading edge of the bottom wing. Providing you had the wings staggered. But don't give up now keep going.

It probably is. My calculations were not right, I went 30% MAC as suggested and it was tail heavy, more than likely it is more 25-27% MAC for this plane as the bottom wing staggered forward, and I didn't increased the horizontal stab size to compensate. The overall goal was to be able to fly it as either a regular Cub, or a Stagger Wing Biper Cub. Right now I have too many projects going so I want to get it flying as a Cub for now, and when I have bench space, rip open the lower wings and replace the busted out parts and try again. The most difficult part is building the wing braces that secure the two wings together. The first ones took me a few weeks to get them right.

I know when they built the hog bipe. It was a redesign on wing location. Probably can't see it but thats what the engineer said and he was pretty cool dude. Of course every one at sig is cool.

When balancing a bipe like this with constant chord straight wings a good starting point is to consider the distance from the leading edge of the forward wing to the trailing edge of the rear wing as the mean cord and put the balance point at about 25% of that distance.

that is so cool. Its that easy.

yes I finally got on Facebook I think I sent you a friend request. As far as the rascal, well i have been blessed with a tremendous amount of work this winter and have not had much time to build. And captcrunch JR. Has been on the MIA list with different forms of sick. Nothing bad just winter in the midwest. As iam sure your familiar with. Still have a couple of months to get it done but boy it will have test fly at sig.

Yeah, I was getting conflicting suggestions on it, and trying to figure out that point was not easy. At 30% it came out to the leading edge of the top wing, and that wasn't enough. I'm thinking it should land somewhere between the lower wing LE and main spar.

PM me your name so I can check, I get some really odd requests from young women IYNWIM.

GOT IT! 4*40 (sealed in box) came with OS.46AX (NIB, not mentioned by the guy) and Futaba 72MHz 6XAs radio (also NIB - same one as in my CG Sr Falcon - also not mentioned). Total price $75.
I think I've got a plane to build.

Dave,
Have built and flown the Mid-Star 40. Powered it with an OS .46. It flew GREAT and damn fast. I loved it. It had an untimely demise when I made a mistake and lost sight of her in the Sun all at the same time. I then built a 4 Star 40 and powered it with an OS .46 also. The 4-Star is a good airplane but it isn't as fast and doesn't seem to respond as well as the Mid-Star. It's a SIG, you can't go wrong

First time EVER that I run into such a deal - and he only advertised the plane, not the engine or radio. I understood $75 for the plane only and thought that was a great deal.
PSB - I've heard from a couple sources that the Midstar is actually the better performer, so I've got a pretty good heads-up on that score. Actually, even my Midstar doesn't hold air/maneuvers as well as my CG Sr Falcon (both powered by OS.46AX's) - but she IS a bit faster than the Falcon (less drag, much less weight than the Falcon). I'm figuring that if I build her light enough (and strong enough at the same time) she'll do just fine with the same set-up as the Falcon. Radio does have mixing capability - flaperons working in both directions (looking forward to those outside loops with that set-up), links between flaps & elevators and between rudder & ailerons, plus the high/low capability of nearly everything.
My only issue with the Midstar, EVER, is that the elevator simply can't hold onto the air as well as the Falcon's does. You get into a tight enough horizontal figure-8 with the Midstar and the elevator simply stalls out after the 3rd circuit and you lose the turn. The Falcon's elevator has never done that. Pretty much expecting the same thing with the 4*, hoping not to see it though. Doesn't really matter much though - I've had so much fun with the other two planes, for so long, I'm looking forward to seeing the new girl join the fleet.

Try the Something Extra if you want a fun plane. I have more time on that plane than the LT-40, and I flew that one a LOT. The one time the elevator servo stuck in the up position and I was able to bring it down to the runway with only ripping the gear off is testament to how well that plane flies. The only thing it can't do well is knife edge, not enough rudder to keep the nose up. If I ever were to build one, I would increase the fin and rudder.

Yup! But both my kids (and grandkids) are grown and gone - and neither one ever had the slightest interest in the planes. My daughter DID learn to fly CL and built her own Nobler (kit), but that was it. Plane's in the basement, all sealed up.
Doesn't matter. I'm going to have fun with it, and that DOES matter.

I have used spring air on my king kobra. I like them over other air retracts because if there is a lack of air they will always come down.
