OK, this one is very old and set up a long long time ago. Glad I opened it up though, I thought I only had one elevator servo, surprise!! Too many planes to keep track of.
The LG is aftermarket, the tank and battery are over the CG or close to it. The throttle servo and RX are way back inside the wing bay. I hatched the area for the rudder and elevator servos in the area of the fuse cut out and used the cut out for the hatch. I used the old dowel and wire set up for the elevator rods and made up one of my own pull/pull systems. There is no lead at all in this plane to get the CG. The switch is on the side behind the cowl.
The OS 1.20 was just fine, the plane would fly the complete IMAC but I had to work at it because there was no over powering with it. The YS in this plane is quite a bit better but it doesn't have the power for any 3-D, the plane isn't a 3-D plane anyway. The last one I built had a different set up with the elevator servos at the rear of the fuse and sticking out the side like most planes today. I had the YS 1.40 Sport in that one. WOW!!! I liked the extra power in that one. Hope this is of some help to you, if not just hit me with a PM.

Either a 15X8 or a 16X6 APC. I'm big into prop testing to find the prop that I {the pilot} like the best. I like my planes to have a lot of thrust and I don't care about speed so I find the prop I like best but keeps the engine within it's working RPM range. You don't want to be over reving a four stroke!!! Look in the instructions and see what they say then start testing, when you find that magic prop you will know it. May not be the prop I would like but it's not my plane. I know a lot of guys that would fly my planes and tell me to change to prop XYZ but it's my plane!!
Do the testing and find the magic number!! Then when someone tells you to change it tell them to blow smoke out there hinderpoos!!!

Gray Beard, I just noticed those are Harley colors on your Extra, nice touch. And I like how you got it balanced with no extra weight with those custom servo locations. Very innovative.

Good looking plane! I have my second CG Extra under construction. Flew the first one for 10 years and now my son has it. They are great flying planes. Is the aluminum landing gear you are using commercially available? It looks close to scale and strong. Wouldn't mind getting a hold of one. Thanks.

If you're considering Carbon Fiber, here's a picture of gear I recently purchased from Graph Tech. You can't really tell on this cell phone picture, but the gear is swept forward. I haven't had the chance to fly the airplane yet, but I think nosing over taxiing on grass will be a thing of the past - the wheels are at least 1 1/2 - 2 inches further forward than where a conventional gear would place them and it's infinitely easier to bring the wheels forward like this than rebuilding the landing gear block - although if you're currently building yours you could move it up at this point. The other idea, for this gear or conventional aluminum, is to put a piece of triangle hardwood stock under the gear and splay the wheels and gear forward.
If you're interested in these Carbon Fibers, call Mike at Graph Tech. This gear is "Goldberg Extra Forward Swept." Or email Mike at [email protected]
Edited to add, does this new forum software have issues with email addresses?
Evidently so. OK, ohiocarbon at aol.com

Nice looking plane WestCoastFlyer
.
How high is the landing gear. is it the same as standard apart from being forward swept.
I went to a show today (Wings and wheels in england) and no one had any undergariages worth buying.

Dobra,
Dimensions of gear:
Height 6 7/8" (measuring from ground to fuse at axle location: 8 1/4")
Width 16 1/2' (center of wheels: 17 1/2")
Forward Sweep 2 3/4", from each side of the material, front to back.
I measured with a combination square, contact the manufacturer for exact measurements.
It stands taller than stock, the wheels are much further forward. The width of this gear is less than stock, but the stock wire gear bends even on perfect landings, and so I don't have a reference for the stock height or width.
If the exchange rate is good now, give Graph Tech a call.

Is the gear you ordered forward swept?
These are great airplanes but they nose over taxiing on grass with gear located in the stock configuration. One guy I know totally rebuilt his Goldberg Extra landing gear mounts forward a couple of inches, which worked absolute miracles but that's a lot of surgery on an already completed airplane.
If your gear is not forward swept I suggest angling the gear forward by constructing a slight triangle of hardwood between the gear and the bottom of the fuse to splay the wheels forward.

I still use the wire gear, but they are bent forward and the ground handling is excellent. My plane is second hand and quite old. On a bad landing approach I flew into a shallow bank at the end of the runway and snapped one of the stock gear legs clean off at the bend going into bottom of the fuselage. The other gear was bent back a few degrees but okay. I used the good one as a template and bent a new side out of piano wire. I swapped sides on the old gear so it now sweeps forward and made the new gear to match. Works great! I had looked for new carbon fiber or similar gear but didn't feel like making the investment at this time.

Hi Jaybird,
True about different strokes. But I've got a hunch your field is a million times smoother than mine! Either that or I suppose your Extra is swinging a relatively smaller prop and you still have clearance bending the wire gear forward.

I bumped this because I just bought Graph Tech carbon fiber gear for my Edge 46 and I was given a 10% online cart discount code for Graph Tech gear I could give to my friends good through August.
I emailed Graph Tech back and asked if my friends included forum friends and they said yes.
Check out Graph Tech at http://www.graphtechrc.com/ and send me a PM if you'd like the 10% discount code good through August.

Just got my carbon undercarage and its all fitted up. Looks good and I now feel more confident in my thoughts of its maiden flight. Its forward swept.
Still undersided on the graphics, It is covered all white at the moment.
As soon as it is done I will post up some pics.

We're looking forward to pictures! I'm sure your airplane will look great.
My advice on initial control throws is to set low and high rates per Goldberg specs, except for the elevator low rates. I think you can add a little more movement to the low rate specs for the elevator because it may not give enough flair as you're landing her the first couple of times.
This airplane flies like an absolute dream and landings are pure, just what you want. I don't push mine, but a 2-time AMA champion has flown mine lights out (I have an Enya 120R) and all I can say is that you'll love your airplane. It flies great, don't sweat the maiden too much. Full power on takeoff, ease back the throttle as it climbs out then fly it as you trim, and you won't have to trim that much. PM me if you want my CG. Now get going and get it finished and post those pictures! :-)

pics are coming soon as just got to spray the canopy.
i got the kitchen scales out and to my horror i am going to have a flying weight of 10 Lbs.
got the C of G now to 5 and a 1/5 inch but had to put the battery in a hatch built at the back.
the tank is on - or just fractionly forward of C G.
Its looking goooood.
Any coments on the flying weight ??

The weight is fine. Mine weighs 10.5 due to fabric and paint. My wing - 2.75 lbs Fuse - 7.75 lbs.
Finally I know what carbon fiber gear is all about - I officially love carbon fiber! Mine bounced a hard landing a couple weeks ago and it bounced like a trampoline. Brilliant! That sound a model makes when it touches down on a hard landing, when you can hear every part of the airplane straining in that split second - do you know that sound? - with carbon fiber that sound is so much different, can't describe it other than the fact you hear the wheels spin up fast, and the gear takes up the stress, it sounds "right." And after a hard landing it doesn't need to be re-bent like aluminum.

I've had the same problem typing in email addresses.
Here's the web address: http://www.graphtechrcshop.com/main....3.qscstrfrnt03
Phone number: 832-335-0328
I don't think the forward swept are on his website. I have a 10% discount code for his cart system, PM me for the code then call and order over the phone. I assume he'll honor the discount code over the phone.

I think I got the gear from Fiberglass Specialties?? Been a while. Harley isn't a new plane. I got ahold of a kit about two years ago at auction and built it for a friend and I ordered the cowl, canopy, wheel pants and LG from FGS for that plane. When I build this kit I like to use the FGS parts, very good stuff and good people to deal with. Price of the plane goes up but the end product is well worth it.

:>)
Oh yeah, well our fields are so bad livestock won't go near them lol.
