I did just that Capt,n and was advised that though it is not in their discontinued kit listing the Extra kit has been in fact been discontinued. It's a pity to lose such a great flying model.

Speaking of the Extra60 kit by GP, anyone ever resheet that wing or find some way to make it stronger? That puppy was a handlers nightmare with cracks and thumb holes.

Mine is an old kit bought three years ago for the Saito 91 that was on it from an estate sale. It was flown a lot by it's owner and had a lot wear and tear. It was missing the cowling and wheel pants and had a rather odd color scheme. At the time that I bought it I really didn't care about the plane as the engine was destined for a Midwest Super Stearman kit that I had bought at a club auction. After hanging up in the cellar for a couple of years, I acquired a new OS 61 FX 2-stroke and decided to see if I could get this plane flying again. The radio system was the old AM unit and the electronics were very old. I replaced all the servos and wire harnesses along with a new battery pack and receiver and flew it the start of this season. It is great fun and even with it's small control surfaces and limited throws it performs very well for my taste and skill. The color scheme I mentioned was designed by the owners two young children and includes their favorite colors of pink and light blue. The fuselage was all white and had no cowling. I purchased a new one from Fiberglass Specialties and cut it to fit the OS 61 with a Bisson 90 size pitts muffler. I flew it that way through the summer and enjoyed it very much. The problem was the all white fuselage gave very little contrast when right side up or inverted. Since the season has pretty much ended I decided to add some graphics to it with black covering on the bottom and partly up the sides with black-blue-pink stripes going up and over the turtledeck behind the canopy. The canopy is in rough shape and I was able to reinforce it and add a new trailing edge which had chipped and cracked. I have painted the cowling white and plan to add black graphics to accent the stripes coming up from the tail. I also cut the rudder loose and removed the covering and repaired old damage from flips onto it's back. It had been repaired by taking off sections of covering but it was rather weak and looked like a quilt with all the patches. It's now all black and has new Robart pin pinges installed.

Here are some pictures from when I started working on it to it's first flights to the current covering additions.

The best part is showing up at the different model fields and having two or three guys come over and exclaim... 'Hey, I had one of these a long time ago...it was my first aerobatic plane..." I usually let them fly it and it always puts a smile on their faces.

I was kinda afraid that would be the case. I bought a CG Extra one with a Supertiger .75 on it, but did not look it over close. It did not fly like it should and I really checked it over. It had a bad twist near the tail. I gave the airplane to a Young man who is fixing it up. I told him if he does a good job...he can take my .75 Tiger to fly it. He seems to be doing pretty darn good on it. My Grandson also is starting to work on airplanes more now. He has too...I told him I got to many irons in the fire, but I will help! Both boys come over and work in my shop on their airplanes. I give em small parts to if they need a part of some sort!. I am going to help them build a couple of gas power planes next spring. I will get 2 Homelite 25cc engines converted for them. I hope Carl Goldberg will start selling the kits again sometime in the future. Capt,n

Looks like you are doing a very nice refurbishing job and I'm sure you will feel justified for all the effort you put into getting your model back in shape by the gobs of pleasure you will get from flying it. But do yourself a favour and get an aluminium landing gear as it will stand a lot more abuse than the stock wire one, and tilt it forward as much as possible to counter the model's tendency to nose over especially if flown from a grass field. Of course some stick back pressure during the take off run helps alleviate this problem.

Karol,

The one video taped takeoff that I have shows exactly what everyone is talking about on a grass strip. I've flown it several times from grass without issue but this one time with the camera rolling and the grass a little high at the field it almost stands on it's nose when I bring the power up and the wheels grab in the grass. Luckily it kept movig forward and with up elevator the tail came back down and I was able to get flying speed and into the air without further incidents. The landings though are quite tame as it will flair and three point very nicely in the grass or a hard surface. I'm looking forward to next season.

The CG EXtra is just about the nicest flying model of that size I have ever flown. Mine is now in it's 12th year and started out with an ASP 75, then a ST 90 and now has a Ralph Cunningham converted to EI G23 and flies just as nice as it ever did with absolutely no bad habits.

I finally have my recovering and painting done. It's an odd color combination for sure, but I'm hoping it will be more visible in the air and easier to distinguish upright and inverted. I'm hoping to get some aerobatic training this summer so that I can actually track and stay ahead of it rather than just doing manuevers here and there. The weather is starting to get better too, but the winds have been high for the last two weeks.

She certaintly looks a lot different from the pictures of when you first got her. See what a little elbow grease and some imagination can accomplish, as she is certaintly something to be proud of based on what you had to work with, even though the pink would not have been my first choice

I'm quite sure that like the rest of us you are going to have loads of fun flying her, as this version of the Extra 300L design has absolutely no bad flying habits. This is one of those discontinued kits that if it came back into production I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Thanks Karol.

Is there a source for an aluminum or fiberglass replacement for the wire landing gear? It works okay as is but I'd like to move the wheels a little further forward. There used to be some large replacement gear sets at the local hobby shop, but they don't carry them anymore.

Pink wasn't my first choice either, but it was already on the plane and I left it on to honor the builder and his kids that picked the colors.

It's looking like good weather this weekend!

Yes there are both alum or f/glass replacement gear available but I can't recall where I got mine from, but do a bit of reading in some of the early posts here as I know that it was discussed quite a bit. Although the wire gear does works it's really the model's only area that requires some beefing up especially if one flys off grass. Keep us posted as to how the 2nd generation maiden goes.

It has been a while and several other planes sense I built one but as I recall I got the landing gear from Fiberglass Specialties when I got the new cowl and pants?? I'm still flying one with a YS 1.20 NC engine. It really makes the plane come alive!! I got the kit at auction for 10 bucks and it was just missing the parts most people replaced anyway. I built it as a gift for a friend and when it was finished I hated to let it go. That one I installed a YS 1.40 Sport, very good combo!! I would like to have another Extra kit but even more I think I would like the Sukhoi kit. Seeing I'm dreaming I would like them both!!! Those two planes are like having a right and left hand!!

Hi to all. (Newby)
I have just got an unfinnished G B extra300 which now is very close to finishing and been reading all the comments on this plane here. Sounds like i am going to enjoy flying this one.
I have a problem though and that is the C of G is at about 3 3/4 to 4 inch back from front of wing and i placed the bettery pack on the tail which was not enough. Looks like i will be carrying alot of weight as ballast. i should weigh the whole thing i gues.
It is being powered by an os 120 111.
has any one else had this problem of being so front heavy?
some of the points made on this plane here I have followed and seems there is alot of enthusiasum on here to do with this plane.
cheers to all.

Mine is CGed at 51/4. Ihave the YS 1.20NC installed in it right now but Ihave had the OS 1.20FS pumper in it. Ihave my fuel tank centered over the CG also. If you need them Ican take some photos of how Ihave my gear set up but I have gotten three of these planes to CG without adding any lead at all. On the one Ihave I'm only using one elevator and rudder servo but Ihave built them using two and mounting them aft just under the stab.
How do you have yoyrs set up?? Do you have any photos??

i could put some photos on when i have taken them. it is all built up as per plans. There is hardly any weight in the tank and think that mounting it over C of G would still not be enough. I have the pumper os 120; how did yours fly with that in. i would love to see how you have done yours. pics please.
