Hi yall,
I was wondering if anyone has put a 4 stroke INVERTED in the Hog bipe.
Iwas thinking of inverting mine, but am unsure of the " tank to carb level".
I installed an OS 70 in my Cub, and it performs perfectly. Never even a cough.
Some people are afraid of upside down, but I never had any problems.
Anyway back to the issue in hand, all I have seen in the Forums have been normal installations.
Help me out here guys,
Sidekick.

Mine is side mounted (OS 91 FS)...........works great. Can't help you on inverted. I'll be interested to see what folks have to say. My install would of been a lot easier if I'd of gone inverted.

Thanks Jim,
It seems that some folks are a bit scared of inverted, but if I can, I would like to put a cowl over it, and the 4 stroke muffer just tucks up underneath.

Inverted will work all you need to do is set the centerline of the tank even with the center of the carb barrel. You can also use a uniflow three line setup (like is used on CL stunt) on your fuel tank to reduce the chance of flooding, plus it keeps even flow to the engine during aerobatics. I have used inverted installs without any problems and have seen many others that have run fine also.

Edit to add:
I like inverted engines...

You may also want to use a remote glow connector a lot easier than dealing with the glow plug under the engine. You could even even use a on-board glow driver with this size airplane .

Thanks for the intro to the uniflow approach. Makes sense - it will find its way into my next plane "just for the experience" .

Off to my 1st fun fly (whatever THAT is) ...

Cheers

That's why I side mounted mine, so I could put a cowl on it. Check out the pic in post #65. It would of been tons easier to do if I'd of just inverted the engine.

When I first started this thread (many moons ago) - I planned on putting a cowl on the Hog and mounting the motor inverted. I chickened out at some point thinking the amount of work to add a cowl was not worth the look. Had I gone with a cowl, inverted was the way to go ... I'd rather not cut up the cowl if I don't have to. I would have gone with a remote glow ignition too - one with a battery and switch so I didn't have to reach under the cowl with the glow starter.

Given the current state of the build - on hold - I'm glad I went with the conventional engine mount as the cowl fabrication and modification would have just elongated the build even more.

Hi MA,
Thanks for the input, I thought the recomended cowling was just a perfect fit without any( not much) alteration necessary.
Never mind, you have given me some more thinking, thats cool.

Master Alex,
In photo No. 2 you have described " Dihederal angle, spot on " . I was curious about the brass fittings on your homemade frame.
Can you please explain for me.
Many thanks,
Sidekick.

Hello,

I need help! I had recently bought a completed Hog Bipe. The only problem is I don't have the instruction book. I need to know the recomended CG range and from where to check it at? and the recommended control throws?

Thanks

I was just trying to figure out what the brass fittings are for.
Many thanks Alex,

Directly from the manual...

The balance points or centers of gravity (CG), measured from the leading edge of the top wing, are:

25%; 3-5/8" Good place to start if this is your first biplane.
30%; 4-1/8" Better elevator response and quicker snaps.
35%; 4-5/8" Approach this CG with precausion. Unexperienced pilots may find this to be to extreme for their ability.

For the first flights it would be a good idea to have the Hogbipe balanced at a more forward CG rather than a reaward CG.

The control throws are as follows:

Aileron; 5/8" up and down
Elevator; 3/4" up and down
Rudder; 1-1/4" left and right

Post #134 has no pictures - I think you mean post #135. The second picture is the one I posted here (so you don't have to go back and look). Honestly, I'm confused though. There are no brass fittings. The jig is simply some wood fabricated to the proper height and pinned down onto my building board. I setup the wing halves as outlined on the plan and the height of the elevated wing half was exactly the height it was supposed to be (the height of the jig).

Is that what you were after??

"T" pins. He made a gig to set the lower wings dihedral.

Hi Guys,

I have had one of these sitting here for about 3 years now and have decided to build it. I have had 3 of these but all were built when I received them. I was thinking of doing a clipped wing version. Has this been done? Just thinking about it to have something a little different.

I've not heard of a clipped wing version - I have seen them without the tips however. You might want to check out [link=http://www.fubarhill.com/]Fubar Hill[/link] for some ideas on modifications. This is where I saw the "tip-less" hogs.

Has anyone built foam wings for the Hog Bipe? I am thinking of doing so. If you already have, please post your conclusions. Thanks!

Foam wings on a hog? Why that is blasphemy! Just kidding...however that is a new one on me as I have never heard of anyone building a Hog Bipe with foam wings, and I have read just about everything there is to read on the net regarding the Hog Bipe. That don't mean it couldn't or hasn't been done, and I am sure foam cores could probably be made. Its just the Hog Bipe is such classic built the way it was designed.

Here are a couple of pics of the two HB's I built. The light blue one is my first one, and the darker metallic blue one is my second one. The first one I flew with a Saito 100GK and also a Mag 91 4 stroke, and for a short time I had a SK 90 2 stroke on it as well. The one I fly currently has an O.S 91 4 stroke in it. The HB's are a fun Plane to fly, and worth the extra time it takes to get a bi-wing Plane built. I am sure one day Master Alex will all of a sudden out of nowhere get that itch to get it finished. I have had builds where I just seem to hit a brick wall and quit building for awhile. Then all of the sudden from nowhere or maybe from a bit of inspiration from somewhere I just get the itch to tear back into it and see it finished which makes the end result very rewarding!

Too funny!![sm=bananahead.gif] Labor day is behind us and well, to tell you the truth, I can feel the build itch coming back. I have been flying the heck out of my current hangar ... but I need a bipe. When I get back to it, the Hog's the first to get done. Flying season's too short here in Indiana ... that and I've been terribly busy with non-RC. Anyway, I haven't gone AWOL. [8D]
