An open challenge to any simulator manufacture[sm=punching.gif]. I have noticed that all simulator manufactures are focusing most of their upgrading talent to scenery. I have what are probably the two most popular simulators on the planet. I am not going to name any simulator. One is very realistic in flight physics. I am completely satisfied with the scenery in both but they still have a glaring flaw compared to the real models I fly. Here is your chance to prove me wrong.
A couple of years ago the 3D rage maneuver was a front monkey flip[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]. This is how I do it on real models. I put the airplane into a vertical hover and then a POWER OFF STALL. Instantly pull full up elevator and the plane will tail slide momentarily and flop FORWARD until the nose is almost pointed down. Not add full power and DOWN elevator simultaneously until the plane is in a vertical hover again. I can’t do it with my simulators. I think you will find that all simulators control surfaces assume the planes are moving forward. The power off tail slide algorithm seems missing for both the elevator and rudder[X(]. I haven’t checked ailerons for the problem.
I would prefer to be proven wrong with a video and not lip(typing)service. I am not trying to be a wise guy but I do want simulators to be as realistic in physics as possible and not just video games. I hope I am proven wrong[sm=drowning.gif].

No most called it a forward monkey flip and it was performed at a very low altitude[sm=bananahead.gif]. The trick is to make the airplane STALL and fall FORWARD with UP elevator while sliding backward from a hover like a real model would do. The rest of the maneuver is easy. Everyone used to do them exactly as I described while they waited to perform at events like the TOC. Now it has been replaced by the torque roll. You will wear out your controller trying to do it on a simulator

I had to check it out, and it seems I can do it in XTR unless the plane doesn't get to far over against the "backside". If so, it does as you said and just slides straight down. Although I'm no 3D-pilot I just tried it as you described, and it worked. I know you would prefer a video, but I don't know how, or rather where, to upload it. Sorry.

The only reason I would like to see it on a video is to check if the full UP elevator causes the plane to fall forward in the tail slide. A slight tilt to the rear like 1 or 2 degrees shouldn't bother it. I don't have XTR so I can't test it. The video would tell all with the stall(what a poet)
. I don't want to see anyone take an unfair advantage of another simulator's physics engine simply by saying theirs can do it. Many video hosts will host a small video for less than $10 for a month with unlimited hits however I don't think I am allowed to mention a hosting companies name here. Maybe someone with extra space would volunteer to host it for you [sm=surprised.gif] if it indeed looks correct.
I hope I haven't opened a can of worms with this challenge[sm=confused.gif].

Are all the simulator manufacturers hoping this challenge goes away?[X(] Now that many of you have received simulators for Christmas, you can test them out for correctness in tail slide physics
. This even includes hammerheads where the plane is fully stalled and power off. I have seen Sean D. Tucker, Jim Leroy plus a few other performers execute long tail slides at air shows. They can be dangerous maneuvers because some tail control surfaces can get ripped off with catastrophic results. These maneuvers are starting to show up at the freestyle modeling contests. My next simulator purchase will be based upon the one that can do power off tail slides with the correct control surface deflections[sm=thumbup.gif]. Forward high alpha rolls, torque rolls and hovering are all great however there are still more that can't be practiced on any simulator I have tried(only two). Like a broken record "less emphasis on scenery, more emphasis on aircraft physics"
Don't get me wrong, I love to practice with my simulator however I want it all.
Where is my asbestos flame suit?[sm=bananahead.gif]

I just tried this with Reflex XTR and two models. With the Jomari TeaTime 2 (depron 3D plane) the tail slid backwards every time I tried it but I was unable to do it with the large Extra 300 gas model.

Alright, with a little more practice I was able to do it more consistently and hover more vertically, and now I was successful on the Extra 230 as well. Every time. Stick forward/Elevator down = the plane ends up inverted. Stick back/Elevator up = the plane ends up the right way up. However, the plane drops maybe four metres (12-13 feet) before it flips after I cut the throttle. Is that normal?

I made a video of this. I hope I am doing it right in the sim. I'm just crashing it into the ground after the flip but that doesn't matter (?). Youcan clearly see where the elevator is going. It's a relatively high resolution video. Let me know if I need to try it differently. I get consistent results when I try it in the sim.
Video (1.5 MB): http://www.enrarot.net/monkeyflip.wmv
Actually, I was flying at home a week ago with a friend of mine, and I performed this maneuvre (not knowing what it was called) and said "Wow, the sim correctly interpreted the elevator when I fell backwards".

Tahustvedt....Way to go[sm=sunsmiley.gif]. Your program appears to have the correct physics for a tail slide. All you need is full power and full down elevator when the plane is at 8 o'clock when rotating forward and you should wind up back into a hover. I think I will have to try out XTR[sm=idea.gif]. My present 2 simulators will flip the plane the wrong direction in the slide[sm=angry.gif]. I have not tried this years updates to my present 2 simulators. If they can't do it they should issue a patch. Congratulations
.
PS: Sverre- Now I believe you also[X(]. Thank You for your effort.

Hi again Tahustvedt
. I just got one of my simulators to do the slide correctly. I edited the TMD file with a word processor[sm=idea.gif]. I changed the propwash factor to a negative 1.3 and the plane will flop forward with full up elevator in the tail slide[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]. Then the plane went straight down after the half rotation as I suspected it would. It could fool someone in a short video however the flip would be impossible to complete with the negative propwash value. Sounds easier for me to try XTR[sm=drowning.gif].

I am unable to complete the maneuver as youdescribe with the Extra. If I give it full down elevator (stick forward) and full throttle it will stall and enter an inverted spin. Maybe it's not powerful enough (thrust/weight ratio of 1.5/1). It will work with the Depron 3D planes, they flip round again from the propwas over the tail.
The Extra isn't included with XTR, I downloaded it from rc-sim.de and I like it a lot more than the large models included with XTR.

Tahustvedt .... Does XTR have an aircraft editor that allows you to make changes such as engine power, control surface throws etc?[sm=pirate.gif]

Yes, lots of parameters to change. Seven different windows actually with tx parameters, general parameters, drive, main wing, profile data, rudder/elevator and landing gear.
I have managed to make the plane fall straight down backwards today even with full elevator throw, but most of the time it will slide the right way. [sm=confused.gif]

I increased the elevator size a lot and made it all flying. Didn't notice a difference in the backwards behaviour, but now I can flip it round with full power full elevator. Makes me think it's not as realistic as it should be since it should flip much easier.

Hi Tahustvedt...Your video seems to have disappeared[>:]. It looked great. I was hoping someone would post a video showing AeroFly Pro Deluxe matching the correct response to the tail surface deflections that your video appears to exhibit[X(]. I am looking for a hobby shop that may have AeroFly Pro Deluxe or XTR setup so I can try them both for correctness. I can't justify an upgrade just for some eye candy scenery[sm=drowning.gif]. Got to keep it as real as possible and not just a video game[sm=punching.gif].

I understand. I want to try AFPD to compare but won't be able to afford it now.
I had to take down the file because I'm so close to the bandwdth limit of my domain. I have attached it to this post but it had to be renamed because wmv attachments aren't allowed. Rename the file back to "monkeyflip.wmv" after you have downloaded it to watch it.

Thank You. I just saved a copy[sm=pirate.gif]. I have found two large hobby shops in my area with both simulators in their showcases but none set up to try[&o]?. I wonder how they expect to sell them sight unseen[sm=bananahead.gif]?

If you try Reflex XTR you should try the Extra 300 I mentioned.
It's better than the included airplanes in my opinion which feel very nose-heavy. Of course, it's possible to adjust them.

[8D] Hi Bowser,
I have flown AeroflyPro, but not AFPD. I now own and have flown Reflex XTR.
I like the flying realisim of Reflex XTR better.
There are other qualities about AeroflyPro that I like alot, and Deluxe is most likely wonderful but my guess is its flight response does not quite reach the performance found in Reflex XTR. Still, I would expect that AFPD may come close, but it is not as configurable.
***** Reflex XTR has a horrible USB Connection that takes up 2 USB ports !!! ***** This sucks and should be corrected !!!
Reflex XTR takes some getting used to and has many more configuration options than other simulators.
Other simulators ie: AeroflyPro Deluxe, and RealFlight G3, have some features that are more game like.
AeroflyPro and AeroflyPro Deluxe are very advanced in their flight response, but so far as I have experienced to date, not as accurate as Reflex XTR.
I like both simulators for different reasons.
A combination of the best qualities of AeroflyPro Deluxe, and Reflex XTR plus the RealFlight USB Controller (Made by Futaba) would create the best simulator on the market.

I have no joy with the Futaba RealFlight controller. Mine arrived defective, I had to repair it, because the ridiculous serial numbering/registration required locks-out any other controller used with G3 if it goes TU. You are left unable to fly until you get another controller (yes, serial numbered, and registered) or repair it.
Big negative customer service issue here...frankly, the monopoly is unwarranted.

Hi Driftair...After viewing Tahustvedt's video it appears that only XTR can do the Monkey flip physics correctly[sm=thumbup.gif]. No one else will post a video with another simulator[X(]. One of the 2 simulators I own is excellent for loops, rolls, harriers, elevators, hovers, knife edge, aileron torque rolling and high alpha maneuvers
. It does require aileron help for engine torque rolls? Neither of my simulators appear to match the correct tail slide physics of the Reflex simulator[
]. I hesitate in purchasing XTR because I have no idea how much the planes can be modified or if they will truly simulate a torque roll with engine torque. I know of no simulator that can flat spin using real inputs(cheater spins with non-realistic stick inputs work fine)however they look good. Some things one can do on a simulator will not work on a real model(a counter clockwise knife edge loop without throttling back on the down line will allow your plane to fit in a shoe box but works without a scratch on a simulator)[sm=stupid.gif]. Simulators have come a long way but still need some bugs in their physics addressed. If I find an XTR to try out, I may become an XTR convert. Correct Physics Rules in real flying!

Hi,
great challenge!
I'm not a good pilot and I don't want to try any of the video programs.
Therefore I only give a hint for all AFPD pilots:
Take the stock extra330s and modify only 2 parameters:
Increase the elevator angle from 50 to 60 degrees and
more important change the height of the cg from +4.3cm to -4.3cm
(this is the 3. value of the cg settings, should be clear to all AFPD users).
Try it.

Edit: I've done it as well in AFP, but there it's obviously more difficult.

Hi rc-rodeo...I know you are a great programmer and enjoy the many planes you have created[sm=thumbup.gif]. I have tried the suggested modification in AFP and it is a hit or miss situation. If the plane is truly vertical or slightly tilted to the rear at the start of the slide it fails. Slightly forward and it works. True vertical is difficult to see[X(]. I have made it work using a word processor by making the elevator propwash values small negative numbers. I have to sneak slowly at low throttle to elevation because it reacts in reverse as the throttle is increased. It can be done well enough to fool someone on a video if only the slide is shown. The real fix is to fix the engine of the program and not the planes. Anytime I modify a plane to do a maneuver, it degrades another maneuver just as with real models[sm=idea.gif].
I was not going to post to this thread again however I don't think this is a good solution. I don't have Deluxe to try it with. I do know that in AFP that the plane reacts more correctly in the slide as the propwash decreases toward zero? All control surface values in the physics engine need to act in reverse when it senses the plane is moving backward. Only a guess on my part?
Outside of this quirk I think AFP has the best physics of any simulator I have tried. I haven't tried Reflex[sm=bananahead.gif].
