They Cycle on the ground, yes. But the Hawk gear doors mean you need lots of pull to close, especially if you take-off fast and delay gear retraction a few seconds

dave you are right. before i did the adjustment to the rtracts i was lucky to get them to cycle once with 130psi. afterwards i can pump them to 100psi and cycle 5 times or so.

My Comp ARF rep says he is being charged by Air-Tech. They say the gear works fine with the small cylinders. We all know they don't work with gear doors on. I didn't buy the plane to fly it around without gear doors. I don't feel Air-tech should be held liable for this. I don't like that they are telling people they work fine though as they did to my rep.

Comp ARF should be paying for the replacements. They sold the gear as a package with the plane, so they in fact endorsed that they would work properly by doing so. They don't seem to claim any responsibility though.

I just want my d$&? gear to work properly.

This has soured my feelings towards Comp ARF, not my rep.

I was also charged 40 Euros plus shipping for the two main cylinders.

The gear simply do not cycle reliably with the small cylinders when you are in the air. I wanted a jet that actually works... My rep would not deal with it - he sent me direct to Erwin.

Erwin isgood to deal with but not free I had him make some gear for my Boomer XL at the same time. He was slow getting the stuff made and shipped but I eventually got it and it is very nice stuff.

Received my Hawk & very nice it looks to. Removed the paper tape supporting the rudder to the fin & they fell apart. According to the instructions, the rudder is supposed to be hinged at the factory. It looks like the fixing is a long steel rod that enters from the bottom & goes through the three installed phenolic hinges. No sign of any rod in the kit. The problem I have, is the diameter of the rod looks like it's an imperial size (slightly larger than 2mm), not metric. This is not available here. Can anyone confirm if my guess at how the rudder is attached is right?
If so, I may have to get the rod from Comp arf, if I cannot source one here.
The guy also forgot to cut out the servo hatch. No big deal though, five minute job.

Mmm should be no charge for the cylinders, I think they were looking for shipping cost only, though I swollowed that from my rep commission for my customers.

Jim

It is factory hinged...but yes you have to add the hinge rod. Should be wrapped in bubble wrap somewhere in the box.

What servo hatch is not cut? bottom of the fin?

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave, Yes, the rudder servo access on the fin root. Maybe it was an early version. No problem, easy to cut out. I will search for the rudder fixing rod.

Cheers

Why should the customer have to pay shipping cost because they were originally supplied parts that didn't work? You shouldn't be expected to absorb the cost either, Dave. That's not good customer service from CARF (but very good from Dave to sort his customers out).

Its been a mute point I can assure you, it was not CARF's choice to go with the small cylinders...maybe thats why the Tutor went with Behtoec...
All gear supplied now comes with the larger cylinders, so all kits in the last couple of months should have the correct stuff.

My gear came with the large cylinders a couple of weeks ago.

No rudder hinge rod in box. E-mailed Melanie to send one.

Problem is solved. The hinge rod is in fact just a piece of oxy/acet welding rod cut to length.

hello dave i contacted erwin today and he is sending me a set of rear larger cyclinders for free.. will i see a differance compared to the smaller ones. i havent flown my hawk since i adjusted the rtracts. before i was using alot of air to cycle them. now they cycle at lower psi.. i dont think it will hurt to put the larger units on though. the front cyclinder seem fine. i wont replace that one....pat

Super, the large cylinder was always the correct one for the main legs...

I have lots of flying on mine in the last 15 months and it has been 100% reliable, flown from some very small sites and been loved by the people who have flown her. In my group of friends another Hawk arrives today, six I think total.

Hello Dave

On a slightly different matter .....do you happen to know where can I see a CARF A-4 build thread? I know that the instructions aren't done yet but I'm about to start building mine...

Sorry, I don't know of one and I have not made the jump yet, Andreas wants me to have one and do a manual...
I have helped my customers with some questions, so please feel free to email me and if I cannot help the carf team can fill in.
[email protected].
The main work is to get the main gear in and working, there is very little clearance for everything, but it does go!

Fitting out the wing. I notice the position of the flap servo does not line up with the hole through the spar & also the horn in the flap is not in a good position. All the things I am seeing with the kit, seems to indicate its an early version ie missing rudder hinge pod, no cut out for rudder servo, flap rod hole & flap horn, yet I only got it a couple of weeks ago.
I am considering packing out the flap servo about an inch, to be more in line with the horn, rather than make a mess of trying to break off the horn & reposition it.

Jim

I just grabbed my flap horn with a pair of square nose pliers, bent/cracked it to the right angle and ran a small bead of epoxy over after. But packing works too.
What colour is your model?

Hi Dave. Think I will make up an extension to the flap servo box, so the servo is more in line.
I have the same as Trev, the Black one. I have the decals from taylor made. I am enjoying the build. Spent a labour intensive last two days fitting the gear & doors. Turned out better than my normal attempts.
Will be fitting a Merlin 140, due to arrive Monday.

Thought I would share a few pics of my CARF Hawk build.

Making some progress but work keeps getting in the way plus fog at week end does help to progress with the build.

Made a set of strobes at 1/5th scale with info from Goodrich's web page (they make the full scale items) they posted a PDF with all the dimensions very decent of them!
Each strobe has a Luxeon Rebel 700mA - but will work down to 350mA 160 Lumen very bright after a few flashes at 1.5m you try and focus on something! Viewing angle is a very wide 160 deg but to be honest it seems just as bright from the side as it is from the top. I did try 45deg aluminium inserts for reflecting but found it was not needed.
Made a bracket out of thin brass strip wich doubles as heat sink as these LED's can get warm but fine when pulsing every second but still need a heatsink, very fiddly to solder as designed for surface mount etc.

Also remade the rear servo mounting plate for the elevator as my plywood ones in kit had a couple of knots in the wood just where you do not want, made out of epoxy sheet.
I also tidied up the rear carbon tube for tailplane pivot by capping off either side.

Pic of the tank I made for the Hawk using West systems resin.

Alan

Sorry they came out big but did resize to around 250Kb....

Having already built a smaller Hawk I find it is just easier to make things, the only scale items always seem to be for a select few scale models.
Pic of the 1/7th Hawk I built.

I just wish on the CARF Hawk that they had molded in the top air 'scoops' I know it is a sport jet but it does look kinda like something is missing, I am going to mold some air intakes.

Dave did say that he will be getting some scale stuff in.

Dave, any news on that yet?
