Guys,

I tweaked it over the weekend and reduced the flame to almost nothing.
Just saw a video on YouTube uploaded a day or two ago and same thing 1 foot flames.

Looks as if Kingtech are/have been shipping out flightworks pumps... and not adjusted ecus accordingly.

However the settings are different than the ones provided on here for the E variant.
The F variant has additional settings relating to the kero start.

Let me know if someone wants them and ill throw my settings up. They have increased the start time, but it was the only way to prevent flames.

I just had a chat to the aussie distributer seems like a simple mix up here, not from kingtechs end
I found that the only the below settings need to be changed from factory to ensure a reasonably quick start with almost no visable flame on a flightworks pump and the k80f

Pump start ramp = 005 was 007
Starter power at fuel ramp = 120 was 140
Pump pw ignit .k = 020 was 30

Hello Gents, proud owner of a K80E now,

Can someone please post a pic of a benched propane set up? I have manual and want to make sure I have everything ok.

Also running Futaba 2.4 if theres anything I need to worry about on set up?

Thanks

Here are a few pics of mine when I tested it. As far as the Futaba, I believe you have to reverse the Throttle in your Tx. That should be the only thing you need to do then learn the throttle according to the manual.

Great! I just finished mine like yours. And I did have to reverse the throttle because the settings wouldnt take. I did do one or two test start sequences and she spools up, and the gas valve clicks rapidly and shuts down on "BAD START"

Im assuming this is happening because it not only doesnt see the gas, but the manual says it shuts down on bad start after min RPM hasnt been reached in 2 seconds.

PLEASE tell me the gas electronic valve rapidly clicking is a check valve or something trying to stay open but isnt because of no gas. And that the RPM is because of no Gas as well????

Gas valve clicking fast during start up is normal. I'm actually suspecting you had too much gas pumped into the chamber, the hotter the ambient temperature the less gas is required for an ignition.

One of the most common fault on propane starting is too much propane.

Otherwise, check your glow, perhaps dial up the voltage a bit to ensure an ignition. There's no reason it won't light up for you.

Regards,
Barry

Barry

I think he means doing a dry start with no gas at all. Still perfectly normal for the gas valve to cycle. No gas = no ignition = no temp increase = bad start.

Well, after I dont know how many BAD STARTS, I finally got her to run! Had to crank up the glow to 2.2 and she lit up like a flare! Wow, let me tell you that at 8pm in a quiet neighborhood, THIS THING WAS FREAKIN LOUD! AWESOME AND LOUD! I swear this thing sound like it was in full afterburner and I think EVERYONE came out of their houses. I felt like I had to shut it down because of the people coming out.

I just dont remember my buddy's Jet Cat being this loud!

Man, I thought I shook bad doing 3D with a heli, this thing had me in the fetal position and excited all at once.

OF course I did it on my drive way, not my bench like the pic! LOL

Finally got back on my Elan project and I need some advice on mounting the K-80. What is the recommended distance from the rear of the engine to the back edge of the fuselage? (see picture) Thanks for any help.

What glow plugs are you guys running and at what setting? I am having a hard time starting mine unless Im cranked up to 2.2 on the glow plug. and even then, she will only last 2 starts and she goes out.

And what ECU battery? I am running a 2S 4000mah 7.4 and Im wondering if this is too much?
Any Guidance would be appreciated.

John, that actually looks pretty good where you have it. Since there's no pipe, the distance is less crucial, just so you don't burn anything.

That sounds like a 2S LiPo pack, if so should be perfect for a K-80E. After ECU read "bad glow" have you remove the plug and test it with another power source? Feel free to give me a call...

Hey Billy,
Get rid of the wire ties on the fuel system nipples and use safety wire double wrapped and twisted.
If you haven't glued the hinges yet, the surfaces need to be notched to eliminate the gaps.
Welcome to the turbine family [8D]

2 quick and easy things to try and solve your start problem. Make sure the glow plug coil is pulled out like page 18 of the manual. Also make sure no part of the plug element is touching the inside of the plug body. Change the gas percentage up or down 5 percent and try a start. Too much or not enough gas can also make your turbine very hard to start. Since you are cranking up the plug voltage so high I would tend to suspect you have too much gas. I have 2 K-80 turbines with just about 8 hours between them both are still on the plugs they came with. Never have had a failed start that wasn't something my fault.

I'm going to get my turbine cherry busted all to heck ......

Here is what I ordered:
Modellbau USA Tornado in White and Red
Landing gear package
KingTech K-80F
All the HS servos (10)
and a bunch of other stuff to make the ol gal fly...

Barry and Vera at KingTech, what a fantastic pair! So helpful, friendly and willing to stand behind their product.
I was so impressed with the transaction, KingTech turbines will probably be all I purchase in the future.

So there you have it, depleted wallet but feel I have found some new friends that will support their products and be here tomorrow.

My jet isn't here yet????

I live in Texas as well in Houston and I have to turn up my voltage over 2 as well to get them to start. I think mine is 2.1

I have 2 in a Yellow F 18 and they run great now. They seem to have a personality depending on were you live. I know most people look at us and say that is not possible to need to turn them up that high to run. The simple fact is that you do in Texas. I have thousands of turbine flights and have been running engines from Golden West to Amt manual start to Jetcat and others. I use McCoy # 9 and they seem to do better then what you discribe. I may try some very hot plugs and see if that will allow for lower voltage at start. Good luck with yours.

I have one of the prototypes of the Jetmach, very similar to yours, I've stripped it down and am recovering it now. I'm not sure you could use Robarts on the wings, you would need extra balsa blocks in the right positions to have something to drill into and hold them. I'm not sure about your wing, but I'm sure there is a minimum of wood on the hinge line.

One question, where did you get the brake for your nose gear? I've been looking for one of these, save me $200 bucks, just need something simple that works.

Thanks,

Luke

I helped Billy D last week with his setup and learning on the K-80 and shock Jet. He Was signed off for his turbine waiver and he is now officially a Turbine Junkie. Welcome to the Family Billy. His friend and partner Doug was also signed off as well, welcome aboard Doug.

The Kero Start K-80 runs great. I have a propane start and it runs great as well
