Hi Mike, just took a look at this thread. Very nice with lots of good material. Didn't realize it was started that long ago. Nice job
I have just got a hold of an IMPACT broken fuse (no wings, stab, rudder, canopy or chin cowl) and was thinking about starting a thead on the repairs. I need some help in getting going with the thread on RCU. How do I go about starting one? Thanks Mike

Easy Matt. Just go to the main index in this forum, and up at the top left click "new post". And you're off to the races.
You also have an option to upload images, and it just lets you browse from your hard drive and you just click away. One note" On a quick reply, I haven't found a way to upload image thumbnails, only imbed them. Just hit the "post reply" button at the bottom left, and the options come up.
If you REALLY want to know how long we've been at this, do a search in this forum for a thread called "2 meter plans". You'll love that one
Actually hang on and I'll bump it up for you....

Schpankme, no I would rather not have to add more formers. Instead I'm using a thin fiber glass cloth in a few places.
A strip of thin fiber glass cloth under the paper at the joints should make it a little stronger without adding too much weight.
I have been trying paper-fiber glass cloth sandwich, glued and pressed in a mold. It's interesting but I have not been able to make it lighter.

Hey Mike,
What is the latest with the availability of cowls, canopies and Typhoon plans? Gator RC is down from a house fire, and I never heard from them about the plans that I ordered. Someone had emailed them and they wrote that there were no cowls and didn't know when or if they would be available again. I guess they have a few canopies left. Radio South has none of the items. How can we build your Tempest without this stuff?

That's a good question Steve. I THOUGHT this was all straightened out before I made this thread originally, but that was before the fire. And it's exactly why I'm making my own molds, cores etc for a new plane right here, myself.
Basically somebody will have to make a plug for the cowl and pull canopies. The cowl seems to be the worst problem right now, along with plans. If you're good with wood or just have a little patience, you can make the front end out of wood. It's not TOO difficult, about like building a Kaos front end, but a lot more sanding.
I really feel for Diana and all that the Lakins have been through, and I have no idea what the future holds. I just don't know. Again, all the more reason to do something different and make a clean break. Parts supply is one of my MAJOR beefs about ANY pattern plane, and I want to kill that problem.
All I can tell you is search around or get creative. I wish I had better advise, but patience is the most useful advise I can give. And yet it's dead in the middle of prime building season....... *sigh*

Mike,
Your situation is exactly why my new 2m does not have any fiberglass parts....not even a plastic canopy. You just never know what is going to happen in regards to future parts availability. I hope the Lakins are doing o.k.
-Mark
p.s. cant wait to see your new design.

Hi Bokuda,
I remember you used one servo for the elevator and had it under the rear of the canopy on your T2k , do you have CG problem while flying it?
I am thinking of using one servo for the elevator and move it closer to the canopy??
Any suggestions and comments?
Thanks in advance
Mike

Yes, I put the elevator servo as far back in the canopy compartment as I could, along with the receiver and battery, because the plane came out quite nose heavy. I installed a Webra 1.45 which is lighter than the YS used on the plans and I did not put the servos in the stab. So I had to add weight to the tail; about 1.5 - 2oz. Since it is properly balanced like this, I had no cg issues. But it broke my heart to have to add weight! However, it still came in at 10lb 4oz and the Webra gives it unlimited vertical performance.
Plan ahead! It's probably best to put the servos in the stab or, as some have done, move the wing forward 3/4" - 1" to avoid having to add weight to the tail.
I'm building a Tempest now and the servos will go in the stab.
If you are building the Tempest, follow Mike's advice! (See above.)

Ref - Cowls and canopies:
I am going to order up 6 copies of the T2K canopies and chin cowl with a local supplier. The molds are already done. I am not sure of the costs yet, but they should be reasonable. They should be ready mid Jan on a first come first served basis, so plse contact me directly if interested. Payment will be by PayPal, when I receive the parts, for delivery by end Jan. via registered airmail.
Note: The chin cowl will necessitate a built up balsa top, but I think that looks better that the original full cowl.

Here are some pics of the T2K "chin cowl". I will take some more detailed pics over the holidays. Hmm, we have to find a way to get some cheek molds, should´nt be a problem.

Cutting the Tempest wing turned out to be quite interesting because the big difference between the root and tip. Even when cutting at low temperature there is a danger of the wing tip melting a little, the wire is just mowing so slowly at the wing tip. To take care of that I made the tip template a little oversize. On this wing I will be using 85gr m2 paper for sheeting with 3x5mm hardwood spars.

Hi all,
first I must appreciate everybody's work to totally infect me with big pattern planes
. Thank you Bokuda and Mhester for your invaluable help too! So three months ago I've started my Tempest project with composite work. First I made plugs for cowling and canopy where I made some mistakes, so my plane will be something different from Tempest (but close to). I'll try to post pictures ...

Yes, it works! So I made the moulds and all composite parts including landing gear, wing tube, tuned pipe because I can't see any chances to buy (I've read your experiencies with Gator, I've tried them without answer...) them and I like challanges
