Besides the beefed up LG plate & ply doublers, any thing else need attention before installing some power up front? To Nitro Dew in my experance for a less expensive pattern/aerobatic type flying combo a Magnum 120 would work just fine. PS As I was ordering my bird (30left) from Ultra the guy said " beefing up the LG plate and doubler on the sides would be a good idea". So.. if yours breaks don't come whinning you wern't warned lol.

Thanks Taildragger! I'm down to the Quest, Groovy and I'm even considering the Javelin II. I'm like a woman when it comes to purchasing planes ... I want too many!

At $175 or even $200 I couldnt build a bird from a kit that flys as good with that kind of power as a Quest even though one needs to strengthen here & there for that kind of money. Still deciding to go light with a 91FX or a larger 4 stroke with the Saito 125. Won't have a YS in this type bird as the added power is just not needed for pattern/aerbatic flying. I have looked at the groovy, Zen, and others in the class, and one could buy 2 of these to one of some of the others and have just as good a bird.

Taildrager:

Your right about the price! I looked at a lot of pattern aircraft over the last 4 months and this is the one I bought. I stopped in at the local hobby shop this AM and picked up a FZ110, the last they had, for $330.00 which I thought was a great price! I won't get a start on mine for another month or so as I just moved and we're still unpacking and I have a shed to convert to a hobby shack before any building can happen. I really like the idea of doing a little 3D as well as pattern with this bird. Some of the others are just pattern.

After looking at both videos this is just the kind of flying I love to do, nice gracefull aerobatic moves, then go on high rates and turn her loose and tear up the skies. I really am not that fussy if a head sticks out the cowel, or you need a differnt gear for a longer prop, as I fly for my own enjoyment 1st. havent decided on the type of servos or sizes needed yet as will have to measure the sq inches of each surface to deturmin that. I am up grading to 6v Ni-Mh this year with a MPI switch with led batt checker and recepital for field charging.

Taildrager,

Let me know what you decide on engines. I'm considering similar 2/4 stroke options as you, except, if I go 4, I'll get a Magnum 120. Although, being new and transitioning into different engine placements has me a bit confused (I've read too many threads). Seems from what I can gather, real problems can begin when mounting a 2 inverted???

I mounted my engine at a 45 degree so the muffler comes out in the center works great and engine never misses a beat

I'll be mounting my OS 1.20AX with the muffler out the bottom also. I've never had any problem with two strokes inverted, once you realize that there are times that the glow plug will get too wet because it is full of fuel. With a little angle even that is not a problem.

I never mount my 2strokes inverted, 90or 45 degrees depending on muffler I'm using. Most times getting the fuel tank low enough to be correct is enough problems with this kind of mounting, as I see guys with inverted 2 strokes having problems with fuel delivery and don't need the hassle. On my old pattern bird I used JR4131 ultra precision standard coreless with the 5 pole motor 90 in/oz on 4.8v speed .23 at 60 degrees all around and really liked the centering and power of this servo. I guess the next step up would be a digital, but don't know if its really worth the cost. Any thoughts?

I'm going to use some inexpensive HiTec digital servos with mine. 5475HB on the airlerons, 6635HB on the elevator, and a 5645MG on the rudder. Throw in an HS81 for the throttle. Right now Tower has $30 off a $200 order, so I could get all of these servos and an extension for $170 total. I plan on using a Futaba 1024 PCM receiver, like a FR148DP. I'll use a 6V nimh battery to give me a little extra torque and speed. I've never used digital before, but the extra centering power and accuracy should be enough to justify the extra cost for this plane.

For those of you in the North East area who are going to be at the WRAM show in the next three days, I will have some Quests with me .

The idea being that you can not only get a show price ($175), but there will be no delivery costs if you pick one up from me.

There will be some Quest pamphlets at the NSRCA booth with the show specials on them. Look for me wearing a QUEST or Staten Island shirt. If I use up all the ones that I have with me I can bring more on Saturday.

Regards,

Eric.

My Cell at the show will be (609) 410-3194

Hello everyone.
It looks like I may have found a home here for me and my 3D Quest. I'm a refugee from cold disinterested atmosphere toward the Quest in the 3D forums.
I now fly mostly 3D so I started a string in the 3D forum called "Ultra R/C 3D Quest (or is it really IMAC?)" at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_35...tm.htm#3550971 hoping to get some current info on the 3D capabilities of the 3D Quest. After all, it is named the 3D quest.
It looks like the 3D folks don't believe the 3D Quest is actually a 3D plane.
So, here I am. I should have come here sooner.
Photos show my Quest below.
It was flown on 1/13/06 but has not been flown since (bad Winter weather).
Power is a YS 1.10 turning an APC 16x6 prop.
my CG is at 203.2mm (8 in) instead of the recommended 165mm.
There is more about it in the above string.

I don't beleive the Quest will win any top 3D or pattern contest in the top class, but I do think in the right hands will do very well against any other bird currently flying in its class. I love a bird such as this that is not designed as a tweener, meaning any 90 to 125 motor is all one will need to have a great flying bird that can win contests. There seems to be so many planes that a big glow engine has to be used with the increased cost involved or people hang a heavy gaser on the front and end up with a bird that flys heavy. I cant wait till the temps get above the freezing mark to burn some fuel. Seems the YS 110 is out of stock most places I have looked, and I just don't see the need for any larger motor than that or the Saito 125 unless one is looking for raw power that can only be used if some mods are done to this plane to 3D better. Thoughts?

The YS 1.10 snatches this plane around the sky with ease. No need for a bigger heavier motor.

Hi Eric

It is John P from Staten Island, good to see you yesterday at the wram show. I have a question about the tank placement of the Quest, I thought the tank was placed after the 2nd fuse former about the middle of the canopy floor, the pics you handed out show it way far forward almost to the bulkhead of what would be the tank compartment. Can you clear this up for me? Thanks

It's your choice. It all depends upon where you put your radio. Not all of the pictures that I showed you were of my work. I prefer the tank to start at the leading edge.

Regards,

Eric.

Does anyone have any pics on the installation of the throttle linkage, also the best place to install the throttle servo.

After the engine, (tank wrapped in 1/2" foam) fuel lines are in place I like to install the throttle servo where the shortest, straightest, run of what ever type of throttle rod you are using can be attached from the servo arm to the arm on the carb. Even if this means trimming a bulkhead, or driling a hole for the throttle rod to pass through a brace ect. After all its just wood and can be massaged to accomidate the placement of most any thing in the fuse. Received my Quest from Ultra RC, and after our swap shop is over this Sat will clean the bench, take a good look at my new always take to the field flyer, and get started. There is no hurry as flying season in this part of the country is a ways off yet.

I also like to have the throttle arm as short and as straight as possible. I have moved my tank closer to the CG which leaves the tank compatment empty. I placed my throttle servo there.

The photos below show my installation. The throttle servo is mounted in the mount provided next to the rudder servo.
The Pylon Brand flexible steel cable runs through the yellow tube from the servo to the throttle and is connected to the throttle arm with a Dubro Kwik Grip connector shown in the smaller photo. I always use flexible throttle linkages because they can tolerate a misaligned path without excessive friction or binding.

One installation option.

Elelvator and rudder at rear. Tank behind former. Hole in former for access.

Throttle only in fuselage.

YS 1.40L and Performance specialities muffler on front.

Eric.

Found a YS120F at my clubs swap shop with that new motor shine for my Quest. Any ideas as to prop to use 14X10 or ? I like a good all around prop, won't be doing any 3D with this bird.

ok...you convinced me.... I have put away my vintage Vertigo II kit (warps and all), coiled up my retract hose, and went out and bought a QUEST G2. Although, I think I got ripped by Ultra RC. I bought the Quest on thier website "on sale" for $199, but later find out that they also sell their Quest on ebay for $175....RATS..[>:] a day late and a dollar short!!
Anyway, My question is this...... I am planning on using an almost new (not broke in fully yet) Saito 100 for this plane. Upon reading this post, I find that this may be a little on the light side. So I read about Hyde type A mounts and how they are a little on the heavy side, to compensate for the light motor. I look high and low for these things. The only place I find them is at Central Hobbies, and they are only for YS engines and a couple of webras.
DO THEY MAKE THESE THINGS UNDRILLED? I dont think Saito and YS have the same mount dimensions, so I need a blank. Anybody know where I can get one like this? Do they even make them for anything other than the high and mighty YS?

Any Info would help greatly.
Thanks,

CC

Try Merle Hyde on [email protected] - He can tell you if it can be done and how to get one.

You got caught by timing. As far as I know the $175 was a end of Feb WRAM show special - Not sure though.

Your Saito with the rudder servo in the middle should come close CG-wise.

Regards,

Eric.

P.S. Taildrager - a 15 x 10 or 11 on the YS 1.20 if it is an FS for pattern work!
