Mr. Hester,
If you get the chance, borrow an Engel carbon 18x11 prop to try on the YS 160---they really like each other,it sounds good on the YS(bit harsh on 2 strokes though), and it's half the weight of the APCs.
Not that you'd need it, but you could take the lead off again.....

The weight works out to 3:1. 3 ounces on the nose equals one in the tail. I added 6 ounces to the nose by the time I was done, balanced it and it needed 2 in the tail. Total of 8 ounces, so my plane now weighs slightly less than 10 lbs.
So again I stress if you're building this plane and you plan on using the YS160 (or something of equal weight) move the wing tube forward 1/4"-3/8". Or, you could simply run a 2 servo in the stab elevator set up and it would wash.
Also as a fairly critical note, after a lot of testing, I suggest the CG location on the leading edge of the wing tube for a starting CG!!!! I'm adding that to the plans and instructions, but it's not all that big of a deal, it doesn't fly that much different. That CG range is fairly big, just shoot for the LE of the wing tube or slightly behind it.

The Engel is a great prop. I ran ,mine on my now deceased Pinnacle, and they loved each other. However it is gets real windy I went back to the 16.5 x 12W.

Where you show the 1/2" tubing being used to open a hole for the servoe's wires, I always heat the end of the tube an one time in an it is slick as a wishel.

Mike,
You're killin' me. Hope that YS keeps running for you. I always say, If Harley Davidson made model airplane motors, they'd say YS on them... Remember, I built Hogs for a long time so I know what this means. All of this is making me rethink my motor choice however. Did you ever try an OS 160 in the Black Magic or did you just go directly to Hog Heaven? I'm putting my 140Rx in a new Temptation so I may have a spare 160Fx that needs a home.

I tried an OS 160, but could never get it do act right. I'm sure it was just something i was (or wasn't doing).
The OS 160 is PLENTY of power for this plane. The 140 is too, but you better have a fresh one for the Nats. just opinions and feelings, Chevy vs Ford.
I'm just saying that so far, my YS testing is going......very well.
BTW Jon Lowe is "the man" on setting up the OS 160 for pattern. He wrote and excellent article for the K Factor and it will be appearing there soon.

Finishing is not a science, it's an art.
Covering the wings, stabs, rudder etc are the way to go if you're good at it.
The fuse however...you better be good to cover this thing, its one big curve when finished. I strongly suggest glassing and painting. I documented the process in another thread, I'll see if I can pull it up.

Not to disagree with you about the YS...OK..yes, I am disagreeing with you. The 1.60DZ i'm running now is EVERY bit as easy to use as my 1.40RXs were, and I had as many flights on them as anyone. I learned a valuable lesson though at the 2005 NATS. You can NOT fly the upper classes competitively with the 1.40..it just doesnt have the power any longer on those hot Muncie days. The other 51 weeks of the year they are fine. I judged the FAI semi's this year as well and Mike Harrison was HURTING on power as well as a few others. If you talk to them they say they had plenty, but watching them fly they were definitely lacking on the Vertical Rolling S. the OS 1.40RX is a great motor and great for the lower classes, but at the NATS you better hope you have 25% nitro and a fresh rebuild and you are still marginal on the really hot days.

Nose ring former
Just an update if you're planning to run a mount with a nose ring attached to the cowling.
Here is shown mine, which is a Hyde ARA for the YS 160 with the Central Hobbies aluminum nose ring. take special note of how I glassed in the former, and added the extra supports from the firewall to the side of the cowl, as well as in the cowling corners.
Mine has kicked back hard twice, and had quite a few solid runs on it with no noticable problems. I'll keep you informed, but it's interesting to note that there's less low end vibration with this arrangement. More high speed vibration however, so I'm watching everything closely.
But the power.....it's pretty awesome.

Almost a YS convert, I take longer before I commit.....

Is that all? What about the smooth linear throttle response? What about the lack of a lean spot in the carburator at 5/8 throttle? What about not fussing about header length, and not having to mold a longer pipe recess in your plane?
Now all you need is a good French kit to build and fly.
Sorry I missed Nats. I am almost completely out of this hobby. I want to participate, but I am low on cash, and my fitness goals are displacing all other interests.

Mike,
The YS requires more maintenance but in the long run, it's worth it, especially in the performance department. See ya in Jax in Sept. If you've moved up to Masters, you'll have the opportunity to compete against Humberto Pomales and his 160DZ powered Genesis.

I expected a lot of ribbing over this one. But a French plane? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!
You would've had fun in Muncie, lotsa wood roaches [8D]
And Steve, circumstances (and other forces) have made my decision for me, I won't be flying masters until next year. So tell Mike to get to Jacksonville, I want a rematch!!!!!
BTW have you decided whether or not to fly the new schedules at Tangerine? I'll be there regardless, but everyone is buzzing about the possibility. it is a great idea if you feel like doing it.

Mike,
You can look forward to competing against both Mike C and myself at Jax. We haven't decided if we'll attempt the 2007 schedule at our December contest. I'll discuss it with my Co-CD and perhaps we can fly 3 rounds 2006, then 2 - 3 rounds 2007 to decide the winner. This of course will be decided upon after a vote by the pilots who show up to fly and attend the pilots meeting. Please ask your better half if this is a do-able option, scoring wise that is.....

Hey Steve, if you need the scorer extrodinaire, I can talk her into scoring for you I'm sure. She's one of the best there is. My opinion is do it, and announce you're doing it early. I'd just fly straight -07 schedules and let FAI fly P on Sat and F on sunday. That would be my advice.
Wendell, the nose ring is there to hold the thrust line in position as the engine rotates around the crankshaft on the soft mount. This allows for the mount to absorb a lot of vibration and still keep a constant thrust line. That's all there is to it. Whether it's built in the mount or attached to a former like on my plane shown, it does the same function.

It is the first contest of the 2007 season, may as well fly the 07 pattern, besides I am allready practicing the new pattern
I don't want to try and learn the old pattern to. Mike, are you flying masters in 07? I hope so as I am flying advance next year and I don't want to get beatten up by you all year long, lol

Yes, I am absolutely positively 100% flying masters next year. So you get to watch me get my tail whooped by practically everybody as I try to learn. In fact, if they do the 07 masters in Apopka, I'll be flying masters in December.
Next year I'll be flying some FAI too. I intended to do that this year, I just lost all of my practice time and I never got the chance. But the season is young so who knows [8D]
