Default Need help programming radio and Tiger 1

Hey Guys,

I'm working on my Tamiya Tiger 1 and trying to use a Spektrum DX6i and having some issues trying to get it to work properly... So if someone can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

The problem is after I'm done with the programming per the Tamiya instructions;

The Left stick controls the "driver function" fwd/reverse AND left/right. It doesn't work too well in this configuration, its very difficult to get it to spin right or left. It has to be moving forward. Same with Reverse.

The Right stick controls all the turret movement from left/right rotation to up and down of the main gun.

Lastly, I can't get the main gun to fire or machine gun to fire.

I've tried reprogramming the DM unit but no matter what I do it still winds up the same configuration as described above. I'm also having a problem understanding the DM unit programming. You're supposed to move the stick and watch for a "green, red, orange" flashing of the lights, but it happens so rapidly, I can't tell what order its flashing in. I think your supposed to move the stick then watch for a flashing light pattern then move on to the next stick movement, and watch for the order of flashes... Again, I can't tell at what point its starting this cycle...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did check the DAK site. But it talks about the DX6 deals with other things and not basic functionality...

TIA!

First, you might want to check this thread out:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_73...tm.htm#7301841

I also have the Tiger I and the Spektrum DX6i. Mine is working now, but I had to struggle with it. My setup is different than yours....I drive with the right stick and control the turret/fire main gun/fire machine gun with the left, as per the thread above (I have not been able to use the toggles like some but that's ok). Now as far as firing the main gun and machine gun this is what I did....I programmed also according to the Tamiya instructions (I did not worry about watching the lights), important to remember is that on your sub trim (Spektrum DX6i) everthing is set to zero. I'm going to assume you use the elevator to elevate and lower the barrel (I use the throttle)...you push your elevator stick up in order to raise the barrel and push it down to lower the barrel. What I did was after it was programmed I went into the SUB TRIM menu on the Spektrum DX6i and set the throttle to +55...for you that is the ELEVATOR, what you will do is go to your sub trim menu highlight ELEV click once in order to change it and then to raise it to +55 (some go to +60) scroll to the RIGHT...then to test it click down on the scroll to set it at +55 and then with Tiger on throw the elev stick up....it should fire the main gun. Now if it doesn't try experimenting with the elev sub trim until it does. Now that is what I did to set firing the main gun....the machine gun was easier....I get out of the menu and on the vertical trim of my throttle I set it all the way down (you do the vertical trim for the elevator) and when I push down on the throttle stick the machine gun fires.

As far as "The Left stick controls the "driver function" fwd/reverse AND left/right. It doesn't work too well in this configuration, its very difficult to get it to spin right or left. It has to be moving forward. Same with Reverse" I think you just have to break in your gears.

Hope this helps you,
Pzjgr

Spektrum DX6i Stick Pot Service Bulletin

Did you get the announcement from Horizon Hobby about some issues with the DX6i sticks?

Before you beat yourself up too much, make sure it's not the radio - Tested mine and the sticks were fine.

Thanks guys!

I did see that recall on the DX6i and fortunately, the serial number on mine is not listed as one of the troubled ones....

Geez, sounds so damn problematic. I mean I should be able to just have my tank sit and spin left or right, but it won't unless its moving forward cause the damn stick has to be in the "full throttle right or left position". I'm thinking if I can't get the radio to function like the basic Tamiya instructions say, I might find another radio...

I appreciate the help with the main gun and machine gun!

First of all, the DX6i works with the Tamiya electronics. Dozens of people have it running so we know it works, so don’t give up on a good radio.

The reason you can’t get the controls on the “stick†where you want them is that you have the channel leads from the DMD plugged into the wrong channel in the receiver. Simply switch the throttle and elevator channels on the receiver. Once you have the controls on the correct stick assignments go through the Tamiya setup to get the DMD programmed then rebind the receiver to “save†the failsafe settings. Then program the switches for main and machine gun functions.

ORIGINAL: Dugster

Then program the switches for main and machine gun functions.

Does that mean you have your switches bound to the main and machine gun functions and work? If so please share with the rest of the class

Whew! Thanks for pointing out the RX connections. For mine, to get it to work per the Tamiya instructions, I had to switch the ELEV and AIL. The rudder and throttle were okay. the only thing left is the machine gun. I've not quite figured out how to set it. The above instructions about setting the vertical trim. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure which switch that is.

But all in all, its working pretty good! That main gun is impressive, the flash and all! The only thing is when I weathered the main gun it wasn't fully extended so bare "white wash" ring was showing. I've started fixing that. All that's left now are the detail. The basic tank is done!

I'll take some pics, its done in Winter Camo, Spring... so its white is faded....

Thanks again for all the help!

Good to hear you got it working! As far as the vertical trim I meant for your Elevator Trim (page 29)...for me it was my Throttle Trim. Hope this helps.

The stick that works the main gun elevation should control the Main Gun and Machine gun firing -

Full trim in one direction, then flick the stick the same way to get the Main Gun or MG to fire (hold for the MG). Opposite full trim to work the other.

Seems that we're on different systems or ways of doing things....on my spektrum DX6i I control the turret and elevation with the throttle/rudder stick. Now what I did was first set Tamiya dmd/mfu as per instructions....then I went into the sub trim menu and set throttle to +55, after that was set I could fire my main gun but not my machine gun so I then put my throttle trim all the way down (and it is set down all the time)......so now when I push the throttle stick forward my main gun fires and when I push my throttle stick down the machine gun fires.

Now on other systems like a 4 channel transmitter (maybe that's what you have) then you do have to "Full trim in one direction, then flick the stick the same way to get the Main Gun or MG to fire" (As per Tamiya instructions). I don't have to do that with my system. If your coming to DAK's Battle Day March 7th I'll show you.

I have both the older Spektrum DX5 and the newer DX6i. Haven't finished installing the DX6i, so I will check out what you said.

Might take me awhile though........ Horizon Hobby has upgraded the notice on the DX6i to a possible RECALL for Tx's with specific Date Codes ..... I will be sending mine back
