Ya know, if you guys had used the Century retracts you wouldn't have to do surgery to the wing, and you get the struts with the retracts...........

A
Out of curiosity, which retracts from Century?

Thanks.

Thanks for the laurels, guys.
Hey bigbird, since you mentioned the "washout" of the elevators I noticed that too. But I don't think it really is a washout, but an optical illusion. I sheeted all my tail feathers with balsa and I know they are as straight as an arrow. If you meant a 2.4 (FPE) I am going with, I have to disappoint you. It's a FPE 1.3 .As I mentioned in an earlier posting, here way back, a buddy in my club flies his with a Zenoah 20 and a three bladed 14x7 prop. Turns that little engine 8.9 K ! I had that FPE in my GP Curtiss Hawk P6-E and it flew it very scale like. Now the Hawk got a brandnew Brillelli 26 SS. If, for some reason, the FPE doesn't hack it I swap engines. They are physically the same size, the Brillelli being a tad lighter. How far are you, bigbird? I remember you are building just as long as I have. I will take some pictures, but right now it's overcast and ready to rain any minute.

I meant 2.4 ghz, that sure looks like a spektrum receiver.

Not very far, I'll pull the covering off the elevators after I take a couple of pics. I still haven't glassed the wing yet.

Good job "thevirginian" I have seen one fly with the FPE 1.3 and it did very well. More pics? I was wondering what spinner you are using never seen one like that before? I am going out to work on mine since the rain came.

Sorry, bigbird, I should have known what you meant with 2.4. Sure is a brandnew Spectrum. I love it. It is sweet. For $350 with four strong and fast digitals you can't beat it. Good batteries too. I guess I am not going to invest any more money in my Futaba stuff. From now on it will be Spectrum receivers only. C'mon bigbird, hurry up, the warmer weather will be here before you know it. Be greedy with fiber galss. Mine came out to 13 lbs 6 oz. I fired up my FPE today and it ran just super with the three bladed prop. Couldn't tach it, though. My tach acted up. But from the sound I am sure she runs faster than what I had with the two bladed prop.
warks62, thanks for your compliment. The spinner is, like many other stuff, home made. Instead of a simple prop washer I made a cup that fits over the prop hub. Was kinda tricky to work out the three places for the blade roots. Gives it a more scale like appearance. More pictures when it stops raining [sm=drowning.gif]

I was afraid of that but oh well it looks nice. Someday I will go for the lathe instead of a new plane. Kind of a shame since I know how to do machining but no access to any. Good job keep us posted. I started to get the Bars and Stars painted on mine today and little more airbrushing. It is starting to come together should maiden in two weeks.

After further investigation I've found one of the elevators is got a pretty good warp in it. With both ends weighted the same you can see the difference, the one on the left really doesn't need the weight as it lays there nice and flat. The one on the right doesn't, with the weight on the tip the warp is apparent. I'm trying the ammonia/water soak and weight.

"the Virginian" Did you sheet over the whole elevator or just in between the ribs?

bigbird I sheeted between the ribs. But I checked them after wards and they are straight as an arrow. I looked over mine again and sure enough, it does look lie a true washout. Again, I think it is an visual illusion.

bigbird;
I finally figured out the illusion with the "washout". Since the horizontal control surfaces and stabs are tapered in thickness, looking at them from the front of the airplane makes it look like you have a warped elevator.

thevirginian,

I think you're right but one half of the elevator was warped. If you look at the pictures I posted you can see they aren't the same. One side stuck up at the tip much more than the other one.

Thanks!

Yes, I saw your warped elevators. I can imagine that it is very noticable looking at it from th front. My "washout" is uniform, though.
Hey warks62, very nice Cat. I noticed you have a dummy radial under your cowl. Can you tell me where you got it from, if it is not "home made". I like your drop tank. Looks very real. What motor are you using?

It is one from Luke that I then added what I could to make it look ok. Using a Saito 150 with a 15-8 3 blade prop. Should be finished next week will post when it is all done.

Thanks for your response. How about the dummy radial? That's one thing I must add to my cat.

Actually I was talking about the radial. I bought the Radial, center tank, canopy, and strut doors from Luke but missed out on his interior kit. Ended up using a TF Corsair one and made it work. I have a website that sells all sizes I will look when I get home and send you the link.

"thevirginian" Here is what I have used before. They are as good of quality as most and inexpensive. They also have bombs and drop tanks. The biggest dummy radial looks like
5 7/8" I think that will work but you need to measure it first check it out.

My overdue pictures of my Cat. I had planned to maiden her today, but it was too windy and I chickend out. There will be another weekend coming up. I didn't build for four month to possibly crash on the maiden. Not when the wind is haulin' at 25 mph. Otherwise it was a gorgeous day, pretty warm too.

Beautiful!

From a historical perspective (not that I'm knocking it) is the "Hat in the Ring" Squadron logo applicable?
