I was working on the box until 2:30am this morning and went back at it around 9:30.... installed a small fan in the bottom to vent any flammable gasses from the bottom and help keep the charger cool. I installed a tamiya connector on the fuel pump so I can completely detatch the lower tray if I need to, installed all the hot wiring. I need to get some angle aluminum I have at work to make little stops to keep the battery in place, and I also need some sort of fittings to mount to the side of the box for the fuel entry/exit. I have both a hobbico and a dubro fuel cap set but I didn't realize the "return" portion of those sets arn't like the supply with a fitting on each side of the nut, so I need to source some other fittings to finish that up.

well, I pretty much finished it up today. Not sure that I'm set on the fueling probe lines but its okay for now. I soldered the probe and can fitting together on the dubro cap kit to make a sealed fitting. the cap on the jug is a mobil 1 one quart oil container cap, which I decided to use because it doesn't have letters molded into it.

Box looks good but I would be concerned you would have the potiential with the fuel in the bottom of creating a bomb. If you get a fuel leak, a spark, with the fuel in the bottom you have fire.

Saw yours previosly (sp?) I got one at Lowes $27 I am using a 1 gal paint thinner can on its side for fuel in the lower section.
Its on its side over the axle ---can't put but 3 quarts in the can to keep the level below the cap but didn't have to cut the tray.
I have a wooden partition between the can & the battery & pump on the front side to isolate fuel/ sparks.

the box is made by "MasterCart" I picked it up at Lowes.
I saw the stanley boxes with the rotating parts bin and canvas bag on the front at wal-mart and went over to lowes to see what they had instead.
the fan is to vent any flammable vapors from the bottom of the box, and there are some holes drilled in the bottom to drain any possible misshaps. The battery is actually vented via a piece of automtoive fuel hose to the exterior of the box, which isn't shown in the pic because I didn't have a drill bit large enough at home for the hose to fit though. I think most atv/motorcycle batteries are setup with that vent system. I made those modifications after reading an article reguarding a plastic field box that had exploded causing injury to a spotter who was trying to move it off the flight line.
I have since secured the battery by riveting some pieces of angle-aluminum to the bottom of the box and I added some truck cap mounting tape to provide a snug fit.

After reading every bit of this thread and being tired[sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif], I gotta ask a couple of questions. I bought the B&D box over a year ago and am just getting started with my conversion. I made a floor for the bottom of the box out of 1/4"ply, with a 2 1/2" spacer in the front. This allows the floor to be level with the "step" on the rear of the bottom and clears the front wheel, making the floor level. Granted, I have lost some space in the bottom of the box due to the floor. Due to the issue of not wanting to lose the bottom box storage tray and having glow fuel compatibility problems with containers, I have done the following:
1) Trial fitted two 50oz Dubro glow fuel tanks that have to be more or less centered.
2) From the measurements taken, I have room for a Kavan brass geared electric pump on the right side of the fuel tanks.
3) Ditto for the Hobbico 12V battery on the left side.
4) Power panel to be mounted on the left front of the lower box, fuel dots for the fill and vent to be located on the right front of the lower box.
Questions and Opinions required:
1) With the fuel tanks being mounted side to side, will fuel draw from both tanks?? (Refer to page 14 posts 403 & 404).
2) With proper venting through the bottom of the box, do I need to be concered about any explosion or fire hazard with the fuel and electrics being in the same compartment??
Comments are most appreciated.

There are some new rolling Tool centers out there now. That should prompt more discussion and some new designs. Lots of great Ideas on this forum. Thanks all!
Here is the box I got at HD from Stanley. I am working the build-out now. I plan to incorporate lots of the ideas presented here.
I will post some finished (?) pics next month.
[Ok, after an hour of trying to insert, past and drag-n-drop, I am unable to get a pix into this reply. I will post the pic's when I learn how.
Thanks everyone.

Just a suggestion, you can use "Nalgene" Bladders or collapsible bags to hold fuel. Nalgene is totally fuel proof and has been used to store Gas/Nitro etc. There are many different sizes and shapes and the caps lend themselves to accept fuel line fittings very well. Some are even dark colored to provide UV protection. The Water Hydration bags that the hikers use to carry drinking water are made out of Nalgene, Hint Hint...
I use Nalgene 1/2 gal jugs to store/transport glow fuel to and fro, and use a Dubb Jet "Tanker" to fill my models. I've got an old GloBee fire plug and I made a Gel cell battery rig that attaches to the bottom of my Sullivan with a handle and the thumb on/off push button.
HOT,FAST and CHEAP. Kinda like my first wife....You know, the purty one. (Smiles)

I built a custom wood box that is 20" wide, 24" high and 14" deep. the top 6" on the front is angle slightly backwards and houses my charger, glow plug panel, aircompressor guage, 12/24volt switch and a 30 amp twist lock connector for my 24 volt starter. behind a black ABS access panel. A shelf seperates this bay and holds the fuse block, power distribution block and the retact compresser. It also serves as the storage area for my retact fill hose and the fuel pumps. The box is split in half up the middle. The left side has a fuel bay (carries up to 3 gallon cans) and a starter garage hidden behind a door. The right side has two drawers and a shelf for parts boxs. The battery bay sits on the bottom and holds 2-12v 12 mah batteries that can be switched from 12 volt to 24volt. The battery bay has a access panel with the top half hinged to flip down for access to the parts shelf. The box has lift handles on the sides and a tow handle from the back. 4" recessed wheels allow me to tow the box from my trailer to the field. Underneath the charger, above the door is a bread board that pulls out to place my batteries on when I am at the field for charging. The top is designed so I can place my mechanics tool chest on top. The fuel bay has plenty of room for paper towels and cleaner. I tow this back to my trailer then hang it on special hooks I have mounted on the left hand door. I simply switch the power back to 12 volt and plug the auto charger into the 12 volt ports on the panel. At 800 MAH, the charger keeps it full and is a smart charger so it slows the charge when the batteries are full.
Completely with fuel and batteries the box wieghts in at about 60 lbs. I have to lift it straight up to place it on the door hooks but it is a comfortable lift. Once on the ground it tows easily.

Hi , the box looks nice , if you fly half as well as the box looks, you should be one of the best out there.
Great job

I read a lot of threads on the fuel location and all the trouble people were having with this. I guess I am lucky in that my field box was perfect for a 1 gal jug. The jug sits in the middle of the lower box right under the lift handle and extends up just enough to be a snug fit. The lower tray holds the jug so it will not shift forward backwards or to the side. The stackable field box is a Black&Decker model called a Firestorm. It has a collapsible metal handle for movement. If someone will be kind enough to tell me how to post pics I have several of the red demon field box

Oh no![X(] I can see some real problems here. Sorry to be a kill joy but... there is a very real danger of a explosive fuel/air mix with an ignition sourse (the battery) building up in the box. It would be a really good idea to drill lots of holes in the box to allow it to ventilate. It can and does happen. Up to you, My box is ventilated and I carry a small fire extinguisher in my box as well ( I am a firefighter and therefore paraniod).
