We had some unusually cool weather this weekend, did some "huck'in" DOD, will probably be my last flight until September. I'm getting more comfortable with rollers much lower than when I started doing them. I did a few down to 6' off the deck, about as much pucker I can handle for now. The Do does them so slow, it makes it easier. I'm getting lower because I'm getting better with the entry & exit, I used to come out of them in a bad way, sometimes heading down. What a difference a washer can make for hovering too,I removed the up-thrust I thought I would need & it stopped pulling to the canopy, I was giving it almost full down elevator constantly, now it requires way less to hold it. Its strange, all my other Doos needed up thrust, this one doesnt?

Lucky me, one more time before my new knee parts ship! Hope they're not from China!!! I got the Do back hovering like old times, can hold it until I'm board with it. By noon it got too hot to hover, it was 90 & climbing. I tried Powermaster for the first time & I'm very happy with it, its only the second fuel I've found that runs clean, the oil slick on the wing is a nice & clear light color, nothing but oil, Magnum is the other fuel that runs super clean for me.. Its only $12/gal. @ Chief, not bad. I havent got completely board with the Do yet, other planes look nicer, track better & do a few things way better(rolling harriers for one), but I still get "pucker" with it hovering inches off the deck.

I am planning on using the Ucan Do .46 cowl on a plane I'm building and was wondering if somone could give a me a quick measurement. I need to know the approximate distance from the crankshaft to the bottom of the cowling.

I'm back touching tail!!!! First time since the spring & a un-controlled landing. It hovers way better now that I tweeked the thrust line. Its funny, same plane, but #4 needs different set-up than #3? I finally figured out how to get my videos from DVD to computer & edit them, thanks to a post from Mike East, MS Windows Movie Maker , I hope to post one soon, nothing special, just a little huckin.

hi everyone. Im setting up my ucd 46 and need some help with the tank installation. The manual is kind of vague.Anyone have any helpful hints on tank setup or maybe some pictures.Do you just wrap it with foam and stick it in the front of fuse.Manual says glue a balsa block to hold in place.Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Dave

i have used two different methods to fuel, one being a fuel dot(which i think is best) and the great planes easy fueler valve, which worked well till it started seeping fuel, which also means it could suck air also.
but what ever you do...re-inforce the LG, i used two screws as in the pic, just make sure you drill the holes offset to the two LG mount screws

I agree with you. the install is straight forward. I have the larger size UCD but the gear must be "beefed" up on both sizes. I used the 2 screws like you did and also put another block down inside the gear plate to reinforce it. I have seen the 46 size fly and it is just as sweet as the next size up. I just fill from the carb fuel line on the Saito 100. I have had too much trouble with "fueller Valves" over the years. ( all of them will fail and "sucking air" is not a good thing )

I used a thin layer of foam on the bottom of the tank and then used a piece on top that keeps the tank from being able to shift upward in the fuse. I used the block that came with the plane to hold the tank in place and glued it with thin CA so that I could remove it if I ever needed to. I use the Du-Bro brand ez fuel valves and have had very good luck with them. They also simplify plumbing quite a bit ahead of the firewall.

Hello,
I am a UCD Flyer from Germany. I have a 46, that is flyin great. Now I got a 60 and I am thinking abaout wich engine I gone get. I want that it have more than enough power to get out of the hover. I have read a lot in this Thread. For me it seems that mostly the Saiot FA 100 is used. I first wanted the get the Saito FA 100 but now I am thinking about the FA-125a. The recommened engine in the Manuel is the OS FS 91 that has a weight of 630 gramms and the Saito FA 125a has 620g. In the manuel Mike Cross says that a 120 engine is not good.
What do you think?
Wich should I buy?
Thanks a lot!
Marc

I have a SAITO 100 in my U_CAN_DO 60 and it works great. It will pull straight up until you can't see it anymore! Very reliable idle too! I use a hover prop on it. Wayne

the 100 is ok (my first) but the 125 is the ultimate engine for this plane, ive had three of them. the 125 is only 4 oz more weight but loads more power.
the last picture is the final setup with a sidemount, works best

I just finished assembling the wing on my ucd 46 and i think i got too much ca on the hinges and the ailerons seem to be stiff now.after working them back and forth a couple of times they seem to loosen up but seem to stiffen a little after sitting awhile.do you think they will be alright when i install the servos or will there be too much resistence on them.any ideas on how i can loosen up the hinges any.thanks for any advice

[:@]Ok, looking for some advice on a UCD 60....... Im setting up the elevators w/ a pair of HiTec digi 5645's, i have tried everything but the elevators are not "synced", I programmed each one for center/end points/throw, then mixed in (12Z) the radio.... one stops and the other can move another 1/4 inch???? I havent made any adjustments in the radio, its a "fresh" model.
Is it a mechanical problem w/ the linkages? the one servo is really close to the surface and has some angles in the linkage while the other is a longer/straighter shot. I can take some pics of my setup if someone thinks it will help explain it.

Is the 12Z JR? I use Futaba 9C,and "ailavator" mix,(channel 8 & 2)with the aileron/elevator portion of the mixing set to zero. This way I get full up&down elevator travel but no differential mix with ailerons. Any differences in travel can be corrected with ATV's and/or linkage adjustments.

Hey Gary, Thanks for the pics and info about the 60. I just got a 60 on Saturday. I found it on Craigs list for $60.00. That's a buck a Do. Very nice shape.
Anyway I going to try to get a Saito 125 for it and if I'm reading your post correctly they work real good mounted sideways?

I've had 5 UCD, most with invert mounted angines, one was a 4-stroker. I wouldnt hesitate to put OS 1.20AX(or any 1.00+size 2-stroke) in the .60 Do, even if it came out 8.5lbs- 9lbs, it would be great pull out power. Most inverted engines can siphon fuel into the carb, but I found that if you make sure the carb is fully closed while fueling, it is minimal. Then when its time to start , you dont even need to "prime", especially the 4-strokers. If I forgot & primed the 4-strokes, I often got "fuel lock" from a flooded engine. A Cline fuel system will also eliminate any siphoning problems. The fuse shape is a natural for an inverted mount, it fully conceals the engine in the cowl. I had one side mount in the Do, a Moki 1.35, I had to cut a lot of cowl, but it worked well, plenty of power to hover. I'm kind of surprised that 4-strokes are still the first choice for many, after having several, I went back to 2-strokes, there was no special advantage to a 4stroke, in fact, a good running 2 stroker is a better for 3-D IMO, then you save $$$$ on fuels & engine. Just IMHO

Thanks for the info Mixmaster. This will be my 5th Do, but 1st 60. I thought about putting a 2 stroker on it but thought it would get worse mileage. Hmmmm..... I'll have to think about it.

hi Rob, yea the 125 side mount works great, you can see the throttle setup on one of the pics and it works real good even if it looks iffy, its not, it has great response. congrats on the 60, and with a 125 you will love it.
