My B46 arrived today. Looks great!
I weighed it and all up for motor, muffler, CH, spark plug, motor mount & screws is 3.75pounds. To verify my scale I went to Cub grocery and weighed it on the check out commercial scale with the same results. Picture attached does not include weight of mount screws.
It looks great. My plan is to give it an easy heat cycle break in. Hopefully I will have some test stand numbers by Monday with SK19x7, 20x8 MA Scimitar, 20x8apc and NX21x8.
________________
I plan to mount the 10oz gas tank so that the centerline of the tank is 4 to 4.5inches behind CG. Right now, it looks as if that is far enough back to access the wing bolts.
Based on calculations (Pro Engineer Model Analysis) with 10oz Dubro tank, 4.5” C/L of tank to CG, and gas the CG will move back by about 3/16” with full tank and about 1/16” back on landing (change of 1/8” from 10oz of gas to 3oz of gas).

Finally got a couple of days of above 50 degree weather so was able to get out in the garage to do the final assembly on my EF Yak/B46 Combo. Put it on the scales and was very happy to see 12 Lbs. 2.8 Ozs. This is without spinner and wheel pants, prop was a NX 21-8, Ign. Batt. is 1500 maH NiMH, Receiver Batt. is 2- 1500 NiMH (2 switches) for a total of 10 Oz. of batteries. It balanced at 6.25 inches or right under the wing tube With the Rcvr. Batts. right under the rudder servo. I did bring the engine back a little closer to the firewall than called for in the instruction, 5-7/8 inches instead of 6-1/2.
Spinner and pants will only add another five ounces for a total of less than 12.5 Lbs. This is only about a half pound more than the old GP G202 that I have been flying with a 1.20 2-stroke.
The engine on a stand turns a Xoar 20-8 a good solid 7300 RPM, not sure what it will turn the 21-8 but it should be within 500 RPM of that figure. I can hardly wait to fly it but it will be several weeks before the weather and field conditions permit. Anybody want to see some still pix, just holler [8D][8D]..........RJ

VERY NICE job on the cowel. It looks good. Minimal cutting.
How much have you run the engine. Also you could get away with a 21x8 prop if the pull isn't enough with the 20
I am sure it will be more than sufficent !

OK guys, here's my dilemma. The Brillelli 40GT comes with this nice phenolic venturi for the carb. If I leave the venturi on, I have to cut a big hole in the side of the cowl to clear it.
Do you think I'll see a big performance drop off on the motor if I leave it off? I'd rather not have to cut the cowl if it doesn't make that much difference.
Thanks,
Vince

You do not have to run the V stack. You may need to shorten the bolts. CHeck that to be sure they do not bottom out. But with the carb inside the cowel, the stack is not needed. It is a matter of opinion how effective they are. I know if the carb is hanging out in the wind, they help a bunch. If in the cowel, it is not too critical.

Looks great! Nice Pictures. Have any pictures with cowl and canopy off that you could share?
How large is your air exit on cowl cut out?

STA, Here's several more pix. I read your post in the gas engine forum, my B46 came with a Zama carb and I have noticed none of the sensitivity you mentioned. The only change I have made is to richen the hi-speed needle about 1/8 turn when I added tubing to the static port and moved the port out of the prop wash.......... RJ

I am curious about that too. It i to presurize a smoke tank and needs a check valve on it. If not used for smoke it should be plugged or there will be a big crankcase leak causing it to run very erratic and lean.

Ed and Scott,
I am using that pressure tap for the pressure pulse to the Carburetor. I found that I could get a really straight shot from the throttle servo to the carb thru the engine box by reversing the arm on the carb but the original pressure tap and neoprene hose interferred with throttle arm in that position. I have no intention of using smoke so I just plugged the hole with a set screw and moved the tubing to the other side.
Scott, Use any of the pix you like, no problem. I am in the process of a very slight rework of the area where the plug wire exits the cowl which will prevent any possibility of the fiberglass cutting the insulation.
I am hoping that the cut-out in the bottom of the cowl is sufficient and will do no more cutting unless experience tells me it's running too hot. We have a vey moderate climate here with no more that 4 or 5 really hot days during the summer. [8D][8D]........RJ

I noticed your reciever pack. Those cells are very good cells. I bought like 30 of those cells seperately to make my own battery packs for customers here in the store. Are you using 1 pack for TX and the other for the ign.? Or did you just wire them in parellel to make a 3000mah pack

Nathan,
You've got pretty good eyes, those are Elite 1500 mAh NiMH 4 cell packs assembled by CheapBatteryPacks.com. I have three of them in the plane, one up in the motor box for the ignition, and two under the rudder servo for the receiver and servos. Each receiver pack has it's own switch which is plugged into the receiver putting them in parallel when in operation. I was a little disappointed to find that even with very careful pre-conditioning the packs only come up to about 1350 mAh capacity. However, they do put out a lot of current without dropping the output voltage very much..............RJ

I had a chance to do an initial balance and all up weight on the E.F 74/B46 combo today. I am only missing two items--Fromeco Badger Failsafe Switch and Smart-Fly Optical.
I can adjust CG from 6.25 to 6.75 depending on where I put the gas tank and 4oz receiver battery. What are you guys running for CG? I tend to like a bit more forward CG than most as I don't like to give up any precision in the plane, but still like to 3D in the same flight. I am thinking that this 6.375 might be a good starting point for me? I know manual states 6 to 6.75. On my plane 6 inches is about center of wing tube and 6.5 inches is back side of wing tube.
Looks like my all up weight without the switches and mounting for receiver and battery is about 11 pounds 14oz (no spinner or wheel pants and Xoer 20x8 prop) This is better that I was shooting for. This should put me just over 12.5pounds on take off with full tank of gas.
I used a Rapila fishing scale wich proved to read wrong for the first time in three years. I have standards at 2.5,5& 10 pounds so I am able to calibrate my scale in 2.5 pound increments and today my scale read heavy. At 5 pounds the scale read +1.5oz, 7.5pounds +3oz, 10 pounds +5oz, 12.5pounds +6oz, 15 pounds +7oz, 17.5 pounds +9oz. The scale actually read 12 pounds 4oz when I weighed the plane, but I corrected by 6oz due to my standards--this is the first time the scale was off more than 1oz with these same standards?

general EI question
I'm going to order a 46GT and the CH Auto Advance EI was mentioned a few times but what is the difference between the CH unit and Roy Sholl SS unit?
I couldn't find anything on the Brillelli website but I/m new to gassers and the diff may be common knowledge to the gasser guys but not me
Thanks
Dave P
P.S. finally got tired of cleaning castor snot off my planes at the end of the day and decided not to needlessly grease up the EF YAK 54 - 74

Very interesting thread and the combo looks like a good deal. What would the be a ballpark figure for the final cost to get something like this finished and flying? About $1800?

Bob,
More like $1200 if you already have a good receiver and a computer transmitter. If not you would have to add the cost of those items which will vary all over the map depending on how fancy you want to get. All I had to put out was the cost of 5 Ea. Hitec 5985 servos at $75 and one NX 21-8 prop @ $22. [8D].........RJ

I got a first ground run with B46 on the YAK 74". I have put about .85 gal thru the motor on a test stand before mounting on the plane.
Motor is very smooth on the plane. It seems better than my 68" yak was with YS110 for smoothness.
Click on this link to see video with pull test:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/view_video....372acafe55843f
It turned the Xoar 20x8 @ 7,300 with 20 pounds of measured thrust (with calibrated fishing scale tied to back end)
NX 21x8 @6,700 with 20 pounds of measured thrust--Identical to 20x8
I did not pull back on the plane to overcome wheel friction.
Here is a list of the items I used:
E.F. 74” Yak/ Brillelli 46 combo
HT 5625’s &Airwild 1.5” arms in the tail
HT 5645 on rudder &Airwild 3.0 arm on rudder
HT 5625’s in wing & Hitech 1.25 HD arms on wings
Futaba 3004 on throttle (might go to HT425)
Four 12” twisted servo extensions
Sullivan graphite Nyrod # S584 with 2/56 ball links on throttle cable
Smart-Fly Ignition Cutoff
Fromeco Failsafe Heavy Duty Slider Charge Switch
Cheap battery packs 1500mah 2/3a 6V battery pack on receiver and 750ma 2/3aa on ignition (6oz together)
Dubro 10oz gas tank
Upsized tail wheel (from Mini 3D main gear) + 3/16oz
KAVAN 4” AIR TIRES with chrome hubs (+2.5oz pair)
------------
Weight RTF will be 12pounds 4.5oz dry 12pounds 12 wet.
Balance point with items placed as pictured is 6.3”
I mounted the motor as far back as I thought I could--~.8 behind specs--cowl is mounted back to wing cut out.
The receiver battery is attached with silicone tubing 1/4rd out--will add a band of this to the front of the gas tank as well.
Everything is fully wrapped in foam (under Velcro)

Here are a few more build pictures.
The tires came and I thought there might be a few people who fly off of rough fields looking for a taller tire. Pictures of full plane are only to see how the tall tires look.
Also, I glassed in a support bridge and went for a full exposed head. I am sure this is not necessary with the B46, but looks good to me. Cowl is only rough-cut quick job.

Can you get tose wheels with spinners
They look nice. I fly off of grass too and bigger wheels are a must.
