U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I'm using an APC 14 x 4W on My OS Surpass 70 in my UCD 46 - works great for hover/torque rolls/ and low speed. It's like flyin' a tractor...lots of torque/power but low speed which is good on 3 D planes.

Glow, not gas... [8D]
is this your first plane ever or just your first glow plane? i wouldn't exactly recommend it as your first plane, it is very unforgiving and has no self righting capability what so ever... not to mention it reacts VERY quickly to control inputs. although, it isn't too much to rekit it...
Thanks for the reply. Since this is my first gasser, I wanted to make sure the motor was OK but I'm hoping it'll be what I thought it would be. Bigger displacement, less cost. I was going to get the GMS .61 Ringed motor for $99 at Tower hobbies but their Bill Me Later has a limit. I ordered over $300 and it declined. So I only bought the plane with a few accessories and went out to the LHS and bought me the motor. I just need a starter, ignitor, and fueler.

Same difference man. I don't get too technical.
Anyway, with the .61 engine. The specs says to use a 12x6 prop. Should I use a 14x4 instead??

I have a Saito .72. It will leak fuel out of the carb so I use a remote fueling valve and when it is parked, I plug the fuel filler into the valve which blocks the line to the carb, so it doesn't leak out. Not a big problem, specially since the Saito is just a SWEET SWEET engine!

Hey dan how did it balance with the 72 in it.

oh BTW, it's my first glow plane. I fly gliders so I can get a hang of it. Since it's a 3D plane with huge wings, it should fly pretty slow enough for me to get used to the plane. Flying isn't the issue, it's just how it flies..

Tomi,
I have been flying with a 13/6 and it was too much for the motor to rev right. I have since put on a 12.75/3.25 and it flies like it's on rails! The engine spins like it is going to rip the nose off, but it still doesn't go too fast. Just the way I like it!
Good luck on the UCD3D! Keep me posted.

Thanks Red,
I can't seem to find that size prop. What brand did you use and what is the prop made of? I'm thinking about just using the 12x6 wood prop that is recommended. I'm new to this so I'll give them props a try and figure it out from there.
Last question. How slow can you get this plane going for landings?? Do you give it a little more throttle over idle and just float in or just idle it in? Well it depends on how the winds are blowing too so, I just need a estimate of how much throttle you guys are using to float it in. I'm used to flying in fast with the carbon built gliders and when you hit them rotors man, the glider rocks around. I bet this UCD46 is gonna be so easy to land!!
p.s. All these good things I've read on this plane makes me feel good that I ordered it.

you should be able to idle that plane back on watch it glide in. you might even have time to grab a coke while it is on approach.(assuming it's a calm day).

I'm getting close to having my first ucd 46 ready to fly. I've read over the forum and tried to use everything I learned in here to use. I decided to put the fuel tank on the CG but it just want fit. I also wanted a larger tank to feed my new saito .91 so I mounted the tank in the canopy and painted the canopy blue ( I like the way it looks anyway). I'm using a cline regulator setup so tank position should not be a problem. I fiberglassed the gear and added weed trimmer line stab bracing. I added a slight amount of added right thrust to help compensate for the larger engine. Should be a good plane to learn 3d on ( I hope). I can't wait for my missing rudder to come from GP so I can finish and go flying. But my point is thanks to all those who put GOOD information in these forums. They help people like me so much. I would have to learn on my own about things like the landing gear block with such a media to obtain this info.

Well my UCD is finally ready for its maiden. AUW is 5lbs 15.7 ounces. Saito 91 15x4 wide, 2 futaba 9405 servos on the tail, 3010's on the ailerons and a mini on the throttle. redundant RX packs, 1650 5 cell and 720 5 cell. JR R900s pcm receiver. robart super ball link control horns and central hobbies carbon pushrods. the plane balances at 4 3/4" with the batteries under the pilot, and no other weight added. Kevlar thread covered in heat shrink tubing as a tail brace, .014x.25x48" carbon tape glued on the wing to cap the spars. reinforced aileron servo mounts and ribs. glassed the firewall and landing gear block, reinforced the wing nut plate. replaced the wing hold down dowell with a piece of brass tubing with a carbon tube inside of it. The World Models fuel filler valve, dubro pin style hinges, pinned with alum tubing. removable rudder. polished landing gear, dubro tailwheel bracket. i re-covered it, so i was able to go over every glue joint with thin CA.
Should fly just fine, and it should hover at about half throttle.
What control throws are you guys using on low rates? my high rates are 40 degrees on the ailerons and 50 degrees on the tail. should i set low rates up according to the manual? or will it be fine turned up a bit withsome expo? im used to flying insanely overpowered electric 3D planes, and most of the time i dont even set up low rates, just expo.

Tomi,
I only fly APC for the simple fact that I like them. Wood does not like anything short of perfection and I am certainly not that. Your best bet for props of any shape, size and pitch is the internet. Apcprop.com gas anything you can need and a lot that you wont!
I flew mine today in winds of about 15 mph gusting to 20 and the UCD loved it. Landing was a little tough because it floats for days. The others are right, this thing floats for days! You really could go get a coke and come back a few minutes later! Mine flies great with this prop and I highly recommend it. If you can't find the exact one, get one close and that will be a great place to start. I would, however, guard against flying wood props. They are nice but have little idiocyncracies that you will most often find out the hard way.
Good luck.

I used an iron and it looks alot better now. Still waitin for my servos to come in the mail. Iread the instruction that states to not use props greater than 6. I bought a 12x8 before I saw this. Bummer, long drive to the LHS.

I don't know what engine you're planing on using, but something in a 4" pitch is really what you need. This plane is not designed to fly fast, and in fact, really shines at low speeds. I'm using a 14x4 APC on mine with a Saito .91. Should be using a 15x4, but the LHS didn't have any. You can use the 12x8 until you get another prop, but be very careful and practice throttle management!

I went back and checked to see what they have and they only had 12x6. This was at the hobby store that is near. It's a small store. The bigger store is a long drive so I'll check next time. I'm only worried about tuning the engine right now. It's a Evolution .61 engine. I read the manual and it says it's tuned in the factory but I probably would end up tuning it anyway. It's also already broken in but I'm probably gonna fly it slow for a bit and then kick in the throttle.
Red is using a close setup as mine except his motor is made by Tower Hobbies. He's using the 12x3. I couldn't find that so I just went ahead and returned the 12x8 and got the 12x6. This should be better....

Got to make two flights on my UCD 46 this afternoon. WOW ! I love this plane. I am very happy with this combo. I need to move the CG back some more. I have it at 5 1/4 trying to be conservative I want it to 3D well but don't wan't it to be too much of a hand full landing. My tank is on the CG so it stays where I set it. My question is with all this in mind where does everyone thing I should be. what the sweet spot if you will.

Here's mine Ready to fly. well on this pic the servos weren't yet installed. but, everything else is. I can't wait to fly this thing. I've started up the motor with a chicken stick and it ran but the trim was way off. i had to move the throttle up 1/8 on the radio but I think I fixed it. Also, after it ran and shutdown, now the motor tends to be really tight when you try to turn it where it usually is soft to turn. I can't even use the chicken stick anymore because it's tight when I try to turn it. I have to kinda break it loose a little bit by hand. It's not a complete lock or anything, it's just sorta tight. After many tried, my friend broke the chicken stick. LOL. I need a electric starter so bad.

I need to get one of those aluminum spinners. I hate trimming the plastic one to fit the prop. Looks ugly afterwards. Anyway, I got the motor started but now I really need a electric starter for it. I need a hand crank fueler. I got the Hobbico MKII electric fueler and it popped on me. Like a spark or something. scarey!
