dkurschner,
No I've never launched the Twist from my hand but before you try something like that you might want to call your LHS and put another Twist on hold.

So is today the big day????[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=sunsmiley.gif][sm=cool.gif]

Propspinner - Sunday is maiden day for me if the wind stays under control (me crosses me fingers).
The brass prop nut moved the CG close to 1/2 of an inch and I'm at 4" on the nose. That's great because I can switch to the aluminum one and get the CG to around 4-1/2".

Good luck on the Maiden DK,
Well the pop hatch for me behind the wing was my answer, my CG is now around 4-3/4 what a difference that made in the 3-d performance, I now have great knife edge, and finally got a great flat spin inverted, inverted flight is as effortless as regular flight.
ALWAYS BALANCE THE PLANE DRY
dkurschner I have tried the out of hand launch just because I had too, I have the 70 Surpass II 4 stroke with a 12x8 or 14x4 either one practically took my arm off holding it, so temptation got the best of me and I put it in the vertical position and just opened my hand, and all she did was climb climb climb like a missile, i finally shut it down into a hammer head flat spin at God knows how high up [X(] Love this plane !!!!
Your pics look great !!!
THROWS I have every throw set to max for the plane and a low rate setting, I have only flipped it over to low rates once during flight I just fly from beginning to end with the Higher then recommended 3-D rates, this plane is so easy to handle, It does have a tendency to float forever on our short runway, so I half to put the flaperons down a little to get it to drop, and I even had my first flat spin landing yesterday, it looked awesome and needless to say was very impressive to the club, i just shrugged it off like I was a pro, then we all laughed for a while, I don't think there is anything this plane can't do. Harriers are awesome too, I'm still having a little hover trouble but I think that will be over once I put my 14x4 back on her I used the 12x8 prop this weekend.

Go with the 4 stroke if you really want to have fun with this plane, you may want to look at a couple of weights though, the OS max 70 surpass II weighs 22.4 OZ and has made it difficult to get it balanced for 3-D, I had to cut a pop hatch in mine behind the wing, but that motor is POWERFUL, and with the new pop hatch and the battery back there I am right where I want to be.
The Saito .82 seems to be the choice for other users, and I haven't heard them complaining about CG weight problems, But I'm not familiar with the saito line yet, I have never owned one, I veered from OS max once and was very disappointed, So I am A hooked OS max Man myself, that engine has taken more abuse including being under water in a pond, smashing into cement, asphalt, mud, grass, buildings, at high speed. and just keeps ticking great, I'm almost afraid to spend my cash on another name, even though I've seen the other engines working and they all seem to be pretty good.

One thing to remember after you move the cg back and the engine dies. Get the nose down while you still have airspeed and set it down as quick as possible. No up elevator until you're ready to level off and flair just before it touches down. I lost my first Twist trying to make it all the way back to the runway.

Waldo - That's awesome that you did the hand launch..HaHa. I'm sure that I will be trying the same thing as the temptation is pulling me in. That's cool that you got your CG where you wanted it with the hatch. With the Saito on there, I can pretty much reach 5" CG with the change of the prop nuts and movement of the battery behind the throttle servo. I'm supposed to be leaving in a little while to head out to the field for maiden flight. But the darned wind reports show 18mph. I may still go as I don't mind the wind too much but that's a bit iffy for a first flight. I'm bringing the trainer along just in case. I'm going to use the low rate throws for today. I don't think the servo arms I have will product the max throws. I'm not sure of that because I didn't try to achieve those maximum throws when I setup the control rods.
I also setup flaperons on the VR dial on my radio just in case they are needed.

dkurschner,
I can't wait to hear how the Twist does today. Let us know if you did a hand launch!

I know you'll have a blast. Hopefully the wind dies down enough that you can get a couple of flights in. I flew my scratch built Ugly Stick today. Tried some of the things I learned on the Twist. The Stik does some things I didn't know it could do. I've really improved my flying skills on the Twist. I'll have to get some of my other old planes out and see what hidden talents they have that I didn't know about. Let us know how the day went!

Hey Guys, we had a constant 18mph wind today but I took her up anyways for the maiden flight. All I can say is.."Wow". This little plane is great. You guys had me thinking too much with this CG and stuff. I gave the Saito about 1/3 throttle and it was off the ground in like 5 feet. Understanding there was a significant headwind. I was very surprised and impressed at how stable the plane was in the wind. Even flying crosswind, I experienced almost no tipping of the wings or erratic behaviour. The plane seemed oblivious to the wind for the most part. On my second pass around the field. I did a couple of axial rolls. They were so easy and I used no elevator input. I did some more passes around the field and then tried slow speed passes a couple of feet off the ground. Give it a little gas, and it rips right back into the sky. Later I tried inverted flight which only took the slightest hint of elevator input. I didn't get too agressive as I was using low throws but the engine would pull this plane vertical without any hesitation.
I'm sorry to disappoint but I didn't lauch the Twist out of my hand today. Not yet...mwahahah. The only thing I experienced was a little bit of floating when trying to land. Pretty understandable with the wind conditions but she stayed in one piece with no damage through 4 flights. I can't wait to fly this bird again next weekend.

CONGRATS DK
Yes you will love this plane !!! it is awesome, and I'm sure you will be trying the vertical launch by hand too as you just have to to laugh at how fast this plane shoots to the moon from a dead stopped position, you can also just roll out to the runway,,,, stop the plane,,,, pull straight back on your elevator,,,,, and gun the thing to full power,,, and it will take off straight into the sky like a rocket as well,
I mean if it launches out of your hand, why not just straight off the ground.,,,, it does roll about an inch or 2 though before it lifts off the ground. LOL
Welcome to the Twisted club. I already can't wait until next week, there needs to be more Saturdays during a week or I need to quit my job for flying. its so addicting & fun I almost feel like I'm going to be put in Jail after a Saturday morning with the Twist and My Ultimate Bi-plane.
Congrats again

I was with DK yesterday when he maidened the Twist. He did a great job and had no problems, despite less than ideal conditions. We did learn why you don't use a pen for a chicken stick. The Twist now has some ink spots that would have been my blood had I been using my finger.
I got a quick flight in on it before I had to leave. I might just have to get myself one of these things! It was a lot of fun to fly. The CG was set at the forward mark, which is probably a little nose heavy. Had to use a little down elevator when inverted.
The low end needle on the Saito still needs a little work. It will be even nicer when he can get the idle more consistent. All in all, a very nice plane.

I'm curious if you guys or any of your pals with Twists have tried taking off vertical with the Twist right out of your hand (holding the plane straight up and down)?

dkurschner,
I'm glad you had a good day Sunday. You're going to have a blast once you get use to this plane. I can't believe how far I've come with my flying because of this little plane. I actually have spectators and new pilots coming up to me at the field and asking me questions like I'm a seasoned pilot. My confidence has been greatly increased. I feel like I could take on any RC project I wanted to now. I use to spend more time building and crashing than flying.

Try the above link for some basic aerobatics. I found it useful. I'm sure that there are better sites but it's a start. Now all you got to do is try to stop thinking about the next flying session!

I tried the take off from the hand going up! Wow what a kicker. What are the limits to the twist? I say the only twisted part of the twist is not to fly the thing! LOL I wish I had more time to twist and less time to work but most know the results to that.Any way , every time I read about another great twisted time I know I must do it again.

Does anyone know if there is yellow covering underneath the purple on the wing and horiz. stab? Just on the top surface.

I'm pretty sure the purple is overlayed on the yellow. There are some folks who have recovered/repaired theirs that might know for sure though.

Thanks for the Stunt link,
Any advice is always helpful, someone always does something a little different then someone else, which is cool and a great way to add that little extra tool to the arsenal[>:]
I'm not sure about the yellow under the purple I would only imagine it would be overlayed but I'm not hoping to find out for sure for at least another flight or 2, the Twist is starting to scare me because I'm so comfortable with this plane I'm starting to get a little too sure of myself,
The control is so unlimited I feel like I can do anything, anywhere, with this plane, so I'm starting to fly pretty close to the ground for the thrill of it all, I love taking off and flipping inverted with just enough wing clearence on the roll over, looks pretty cool, and you always get someone thinking its going in to ground, so its always good for a scream.[X(] Gotta love that!![8D]

Waldopepperaxel,
I know what you mean about feeling comfortable with the Twist making you want to take more chances. I like this RCU Review video [link=http://67.18.81.100/rcuvideos/magazine/reviews/408/twist3d2.wmv]TWIST[/link] where the pilot does a tight loop about 3 foot off the ground. I've done it about 10' high but I keep wanting to go lower. I got brave like that with my trainer about 7 years ago and caught the nose wheel on a freshly plowed furrow and ripped the fire wall out.[X(] The plane slid in on its belly and filled the fuse up like a big scoop. I spent the next week repairing and cleaning out the Ohio clay.

I finally flew my Twist for the first time last weekend, and it is the same story as the rest ..I LOVE IT . I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on wheel pants. The plane looks so cool, but I think it needs pants to finish off the looks.

Hey Great Video, It looks like my plane LOL.
I'm glad I saw that one because it appears he has the same problems I do in the hover, it gets kind of squirrelly, but I'm getting much better at it, I think its because of the length of the fuselage, its a little more difficult to hold it there, But I will have my 14x4 prop working for me this weekend, if it doesn't rain us, looks like Ohio is getting the weather right now, it should be here just in time for us on Friday / Saturday
But I don't care I'll wait out the down poors and fly in between, we might be in Ohio on the weekend of the 21 of October for our annual Cedar point Roller Coaster frenzy[sm=bananahead.gif] But we were just offered a band job opening up for the Outlaws the 21st, so we might not get there this year now. [&o]
Anyway I will let you know the results of the Hover, and I will be working on the Knife edge figure 8 and the knife edge loop this week, as well as the flat spin landing. I'm so excited
TEYMOUR - Wheel pants?? On the twist? Thats a great Idea to dress it up a bit, You must have a paved runway, We fly off the grass so wheel pants to me is just a grass and dirt collector, I didn't even put them on the Ultimate Bi-plane I have and they gave them to me with the plane. Glad you liked the Twist it is a blast of a plane to fly. and Congrats on the first flight of the Twist.

Jeremy - I'm using a Saito .82 that I just put into a Twist a couple of weeks ago. It works just great. If you go back a couple of pages, I've even attached a couple of pictures of the Saito .82 installed up close.
LANDING GEAR - I think its a great idea. It looks very cool. If you feel better about your plane, you will probably fly it better.

So dkurschner, when's the next flying session. I couldn't wait to get back to the field after the first flights with the Twist. I've counted about 5 Twist since I've joined this club. There is one of the new plug and play Twist and even one with a Wankel rotary. The owner of the local hobby shop owns the Wankel and it's cool to watch fly. I've put over two gallons through my Twist and am still having fun!

I just purchased from Horizon and put together, but I noticed the tail elevator was out of wack, one side was glued 1/3 inch higher. how much is too much to be concerned about?
Also about propeller, what size?
also about receiver4 with y-harness or 5 without and use a channel mixing transmitter
Thanks
