When I bought the bung kit for gas, it even came with the Tygon tubing. OBTW, if you buy the recommended replacement tank, it doesn't fit, it is quite a bit too large.

I'll get the tag from the bag the tank came in when I dig out the entrance to the shop later today. I wish we could figure out a way to moderate the snowfall here...[:@]
It was the Sullivan slant 24oz tank. I would have to have taken a chainsaw to the insides of the fuse to get it to fit. It is the one recommended on Towers' website

Hey Guys,
First I need to say hello. Have been a member for awhile but never had a need to post Lol. I am in the process of finishing up a GP SS running a DLE 30. I am looking for a Pitts style muffler that will fit within the confines of the cowl. I REALLY don't want to have to notch/cut the sides if I can avoid it. I have tried the Brisson but it is slightly to big. ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobby

WCB,
Thank you. I didn't see the link for custom work on their site the first time I checked. I'll call them on Monday morning. I just would HATE to ruin the cowl by having to cut an opening out of the side of it.

Hello all. I still haven't flown the SS, but I am close. Taxied around the yard some and got the motor purring nice. Tried the smoke system out, COOL

OK, have flown my stearmen 2 evenings now, here is what I have learned. I should mention this is my first biplane, first gas engine and first smoke system. My first flight up was a nail bitter to say the least, the plane was climbing wildly and turning to the left big time. I trimmed an trimmed till it was flying hands off. This thing flys heavy I thought to myself. Right about then my motor died. This is no glider, it looses altitude fast, pick a spot in a hurry. I bent the landing gear and ripped a hole in one wing. Easy fix in the shop and I was back in the pasture to try again. Second flight was better because I didn't have to deal with the trim. Flew around a bit and couldn't resist trying a hammerhead. Hammerhead was beautyful, but now I am dead stick again. Made the runway this time but went off the end and flipped over in the long grass, no harm done but enough for the first night. Re-tuned the motor, I was lean on the top end. Second night was teriffic, motor ran great, tryed the smoke in the air, looks awsome, flew some touch and goes. This one looks very scale in the air, I like the sound of the gas engine. I flew 5 tanks of fuel and five tanks of smoke oil and got everything tunned nice. With my 16 oz oil tank, I can get about 5 minutes of good smoke during the flight. I was using a 20x 10 prop, and will be trying a 20x10-6 next time up.

Les,
Sorry to hear about the plane. Glad it's getting there now.
I wound up going with a JTEC wrap around which looks like it should fit and clear the cowl.<br type="_moz"/>

Here are a few shots showing the clearance issue. I just got off the phone with Al from JTEC. Talk about a REALLY nice guy and amazing customer service. The JTEC is 3/4" thick which after talking with Al and measuring looks like it will fit within the cowl. Best part about it was as of yesterday it was being made and the contact from JTEC said they were building it and it would ship within the week. While speaking with Al he mentioned it had already gone out! AWESOME! I will post a few pictures of it mounted on the DLE and if it fits within the cowl. Fingers are crossed! Thanks to Al at JTEC and WCB for the referral

Looks good. You didn't have to build a box in the firewall for your carb to go in, much nicer for setting the carb and looks nice and neat. Good luck with the muffler, will be watching for pictures. The Stearman looks great in the air, very scale like when performing air show type manuvers. Did you use the stock fuel tank in yours? I did to begin with, but found that I did't need that big of a tank and I swapped it out for a 11 oz. I have a 14 oz on order and that will give me 14 min. flight times. The RCGF 45 will run for 9 min on the ground at WOT with the 11 oz tank turning a 20 x 10 prop, and I don't fly at WOT.

Les I am trying to figure out the tank situation. Becuase the carb is right up against the hole in the firewall that would secure the tank normally I am looking for different ideas on securing it. I am also mounting a 10oz sullivan for the smoke system I have put together. I'm thinking of moutning them over/under styel and wrapping them in foam. Looks like they should fit in the area just behind the firewall. Still working that out. I'm breaking the 30 in on a 18x8 master but hope to run a 20X10 once it's finished breaking in. Should have more than enough power. I don't fly crazy so it should provide scale flight looks and performance.

A 20x10 is to much for the DLE30... 19x8 or 20x6.
One day I will work on my SS.

Cat why not the 20X10? A 20X8 is one of the recommended props from the manufacturer and 2 guys in my club both have DLE 30's spinning 20X10's at just over 7000 rpm. Just curious?

What plane Cat? I think the size of the SS's cowl and the fact I am using a scale radial from Williams with lots of openings should run cool enough. At least I hope it does Lol.

The JTEC showed up yesterday and......... ITFITS !! Like a glove. Trimming the cowl today but it fits completely within the cowl with about an 1/8th inch of clearance. Some foil heat tape on the inside just for good measure and I am good to go. Just need to drill and tap the muffler for my oil port. A BIG THANKYOU ! to Al at JTEC for his help and amazingly fast shipping! I'll post a few pictures when it's mounted up.

No pictures of the installation yet but I did manage to shoot a short video of the initial startup. MAN what a sweet little engine! I think I am going to be VERY happy!

On both the test stand and the plane I am using a piece of thick neoprene rubber sandwiched between two washers to act as a damper. I never realized how much these little engines can vibrate, expecially at idle. If this doesn't work out I may look into the commercially available isolators. I just prefer making something to buying it. Call me cheap Lol.
