I just finaly got mine all trimmed out today and did some good flyin. It will land like a 4 * and fly like the 540 it is. It will glide and glide and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
landing is a breeze if you have it all properly trimmed and balanced.
Here are a couple pics of how I did my belly pan and fuel tank.

Eagle that is just a piece of art. I really like the way you did your fuel tank. Does it just slide in and out of the compartment? How did you do the T.E. hold down?

Yes it slides in and out. Took me about a whole evening to come up with this after several other ideas. Look at the pics and you can see where the screw goes in the front of it from the front of the fire wall and the one that goes in the back. Front piece recessed to clear the T nuts. Just be sure to clear the engine mount with the front one so you don't have to take all that stuff out to remove the fuel tank. And mount the tank far enough back in the unit so you can bend any lines as needed to avoid kinking them. All holes generously doused with thin CA to insure a good hold by the screws since it's all balsa. No foam but I use Dubro sintered fuel clunks that along with some silicone based Armoral seems to completely eliminate any air bubbles sucking up the fuel line problem. Same idea the filters in those vibrating chain saws allow it to run completely dry.

Hello Guys:
Just wanted to tell let you know that I because a member of the VF family last Tuesday. I ordered the Edge 540. I am going to put a OS .91FX in it. I have been reading this very long thread so I know you guys are the experts on building these ARF's.
I do not think VF has a backlog now. Like I said above, I ordered the plane last Tuesday and I will receive it at the end of this week. It was shipped Last Thursday. (You guys are not dreaming) I cannot believe it was already shipped. I was expecting it to be shipped weeks from now. Right now, I am building a SSE Kit so I do not know if I will stop building the kit or what not. I really want to get the VF up in the air.

I finally got to fly my Edge today. I think the problem I had with the engine was due to the fueler valve being too low, mounted it on the bottom of the fuse.
Anyway, I had a hard time getting the plane to fly level for some reason. It would go up, two clicks down it would go down. One click up and it would go up. Kept doing this so I decided to bring it in. Pancaked the LG on landing so now I have to get another LG.
Not sure why it wouldn't level out.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

That does sound like an odd problem.. How is inverted flight? thinking it could be a cg problem maybe a tad to aft. Ive had a simular issue with my tiger 2 which ended up being my servo twitching.

I never got to inverted flight. I only did a few laps around the flight pattern trying to get a good level flight and then brought it in.
I got it to balance right on 4 inches with 1/2 oz of lead in the tail cover and inverted.
Which LG are you using? I have a Dubro fiber one but not sure if it will fit.

Salty, sounds like your control horns are set for too much throw or something is loose! Try using the farthest hole on the elevator horns and the nearest ones on the elevator servo arm. Also make sure the servo is not moving in its mounting.
Good luck!! [8D]

Cal, you do have a good point. Should of thought of that. I had a huge problem with my servo screws comming loose which made the servos start rattling around inside.
Shakes well the edge wasn't a bad jump because i have nearly 200 flights on my tiger and i activly fly at rc combat events with my combat plane. So when i wanted an aerobat it was just like another plane to me. But i can tell you that on high rates this thing will twist and shout and low rates it couldn't be any easier. VF makes a great plane and i think the edge could make a wonderfull third plane, only if youve masterd your second.

Didn't think of that Cal; I'll look into the servos and control horns rattleing around.
Anyone have any tips on which gear will fit? I was going to put a wire between the gear but didn't get to it yet. Can't find that Dubro one I have. I know it's here somewhere in that mess I call a garage.

Does anyone know where i can find info on building tip for the Vectorflight Extra 300S. I've got a new Saito 100 for the motor. I would like to invert the motor rather than side mounting it. Any help would be great. Just opened the box today.

there is a vectorflight extra build thread on the forum. I just received my extra and I'm thinking of an os 120 for power. Problem may be the location of the tank, not sure yet if i can get the engine high enough to fit thru the cowl. In any event, inverted will work, just be careful of the tank location and check first to make sure you can get it high enough in the fuse with respect to the carb. as you go, post in the extra forum. i just started tonight with triangular stock reinforcement to the firewall and landing gear plate.

You bet guys!!!
Remember rates or expo do not effect trim so the trim remains sensitive even if the sticks are not. Always try to take maximum mechanical advantage from the servos. I use the furthest out hole on the control surface horn, and then select one on the servo which gives slightly more than the maximum recommended control surface range with full stick motion. This way you are using the entire servo movement and not just using a small amount of servo rotation. Gives better control resolution (if there is such a word!), especially on the trim setting, and helps protect servo gears cause they have better leverage and wear spread over a larger number of gear teeth. Your plane will not seem as twitchy as well.
Have fun!

Salty: If you would like to go carbon fiber im installing a Graphtech LG from the aeroworks 60 size aeroworks edge. Looks very nice and gained a little bit more height. ONly bad thing with carbon fiber that it is brittle. But it is hell'a light!
You could also shoot the guys at TNT LG a question... If you cant find something premade they will custom make you one. Either aluminum or Graphite. Check out[link=http://www.tntlandinggear.com/store/shop/welcome_to_the_online_catalog.htm]TNT Landinggear[/link] Great guys over there...

Wow! There actually is an end to this thread! Sorry to mess it up with another post. I finished an Edge a few weeks ago but was off to the airshow at Oshkosh with my 100% scale Ercoupe so did not get to do anything but a Maiden flight til last weekend. I got to really wring it out then.
My kit has the new fuselage / wing attachment and it works very well. If you are not familiar with it, there is a recess in the fuselage about 1/8 inch deep and the wing root seats into it on each side. There is an alignment dowel about 3/4 cord aft in the wing that passes thru the fuselage and into each wing. The center section of the main spar now attaches with a single bolt. I read in earlier posts some time back about concern with the wing seating at the aft edge of the wing. There is none of this with the new update. It is very simple and rock solid. VF suggested splitting the dowel and doing the same thing that Sig does with the Something Extra with the rubber band to keep things seated, but I could not see the big deal with just leaving the dowel in. Works great. No working of the wing whatsoever.
I used a carbon fiber arrow shaft for the dowel at the front of the belly pan and two small screws at the back. Simple and fool proof and light.
Mine is powered with a Super Tigre .90, same power I used in my 58" VectorFlight Extra. Right now I am turning a MAS 13X6 Semitar prop around 9800 rpm. Verticle is superb, power very good. I'm planning on moving the rpm up to max power this weekend, probably another 7 to 800 rpm in there. My experience is that 10K seems to be the point that APC props start to perform better on these motors, so I'll also try that this weekend. In the past under 10K the APC does not have the pulling authority of the MAS Semitar. ST's have alot of torque and I have always run a tad rich, but this year I'm moving up rpm and likeing the results. Like most of you, I'm adicted to VF's stuff. Nothing flies like em. I was suprised to see the Edge flies even better than the 58 in Extra with the same power. Keep the word going among your friends and clubs about VF. We need to support north american companies, there aren't many left and we don't want to loose this kind of quality and customer support.

Does anyone have any photos of how your aileron linkage/horns are installed? If so, would you post them on my thread VF extra 300 build? I searched this thread and can't find any reference to the info. Thanks, Suitcase.

Hello Guys:
I just received my VF Edge 540 and man the plane looks great. They sure packed it very well, too. The only complaint I have is the instructions. They are pretty bad. [sm=thumbdown.gif] I cannot believe it is only what 6 pages. I would think building the plane would be the hard part and the instructions would be fairly easily to assemble. Their planes are solid and the instructions are not. I hope you guys will be helping me out. I will need it. This will be my third plane (Avistar, tiger II and VF Edge 540). I am hoping I can assemble this plane with the instructions I have got.

You need to get back to building your SSE and wait with the Edge
Once you've built the SSE, you'll be better prepared to build this ARF with lacking instructions

I really do not know which one I like to do first. But, I have heard such great reviews about the VF Edge 540 so I should start and finished the Edge first. All I have to say is - why is it so hard to make up instructions when building the plane is the most difficult part of the whole thing. VF makes great planes just finish the product. Ok, no more gripe about the instructions. I have said my peace about the instructions. Hopefully, it will be heard!!!
