Wagstaff Extra 300
#201
After reading this thread (not a small task!) I had to go to the LHS and get the last Patty Wagstaff Extra 300 he had.
I am so weak! please stop posting threads on how well built and finished these planes are I cannot take it any more.
Just kidding. keep it up.

Mr RC:
I bought the engine from someone on this site,....But I do know that there is a backlog from Brison Aircraft, there's no telling when you will get it,....not to scare you or anything but at one time there was around a three month turnaround time on those engines, hang in there, it'll be worth the wait.
as soon as I get it mounted, I will let you guys know how it balances.

Is everyone's horizonal stab flat? With it upside down (servo's up) each tip ia off my table around 1/8-1/4". I hope it is supposed to be built this way.

QS pilot.....I think it is supposed to be that way, if you lay the stab on a level table, you will notice that the ends of the stab will not touch the table, that is because of the asymetrical airfoil design.
Does that make any sense?? or am I just babbling

I received my PW 1/4 Extra a few days ago. I have been keeping up with this thread to see what type of engines were being used. I am planning on using a Zenoah G62 that I have available. I am concerned though with the weight. The G62 without muffler is 73oz. Does anyone think that this will be a problem?
Thanks for any input.

rcpilot82,
A G62 will give you plenty of power, however you will pay the price with weight. If you don't have the G62 yet get a BME 50 or ZDZ 50. They are light engine and put out almost the same power. There power is slightly less than the G62, but your plane is lighter! The BME 50 or ZDZ 50 will give you over 1.5:1 thrust to weight. Based on what I am seeing you need to keep this plane light so you have low wing loading! You don't want a lead sled that will go straight up but does not 3D well!
X300pilot,
You are probably right. There may be a taper in the stab. i will have to take a look. I did not think of that.

Don,
My Extra was in near perfect condition, I checked it out very well before I left the store. I will be putting a Taurus 3.2 on the front of this if I get a chance to work on it. Everyone keeps coming by to look at it.
I am very happy with the quality of the kit and there is not much work to do to get it ready.
Back to the shop.

Just got off the phone with Rc Showcase. Looks like the next available ZDZ 50 shipment is in late November - early December. The first and second shipments are spoken for. I cant wait that long.
I am not looking for 3D, so will the ZDZ40 be enough for me? I just want enough power for a few vertical snaps in a row.
Any help would be appreciated as this is my first gasser.
Thanks.

d4a2nok,
You should look into a BME 44 or better yet a BME 50. I have a BME 44 for mine. BME is making a 50 now. The BME 44 should give you 1.5:1 thrust to weight. Not sure about the BME 50. Call don Hobbies at 800-972-6273. They sell the BME.
X300PILOT,
No I did not goto TOC. I had to work last week.

Ann Marie,
In all of the Tower ads(in mags) & in Tower Talk it says,"requires:2-stroke 1.60-2.20 glow or gas engine".Yet,in the manual it says " up to 65cc gas engine " can be used. Now that is a HUGE difference.65cc,?in a 1/4 scale plane? Is that over-kill?Why is there a discrepancy?
What would you think of putting in a 3W-70 on this plane?
Thanks? EJB

EJB,
I think you will come out way nose heavy with the 3W-70.
Look at the BME 44 or 50, ZDZ 40 or 50, DA 50. The are all list and will give you more than enough power.

I completely agree that it would be too nose heavy(and grossly over-powered).I'm asking for Ann Marie's opinion because a guy at another site is going to use the 3W70.

I have finally flown my plane. This is one beautiful plane. I have a BME 50 on it. I had some radio problems when running the engine at first. I tried everything I knew to solve the problem. I had the ignition on the engine mount box, the batt in the same place. The radio equipt was mounted behind the canopy. the batt is in the tail behind the rudder servos. I could not seperate the equipt any further. Anyway I solved the problem by putting a BOUSH cap ignition on the s[ark plug. I added 1 oz of weight to the left wing for lateral balance. I used all the hardware that came with the kit. I also used 4 Hitec 605 servos in the tail. The plane is slightly nose heavy. I like mine that way because I am not going to fly 3D. I am not brave enough to fly this plane like it was designed to fly. If anyone reading this post thinking about buying this plane, don't delay. This plane flys like *****cat and will fly like a tiger if you want it to. I love it. Landing is very stable. I had a few dings on the kit when I received it. I had no problems with the wing tube. The center section of the horiz stab was too loose fitting so I had to do some filling in where tje stab section was epoxied to the fuse. The kit is not perfect but hell, I'm not either. YOU GODDA GET CHEW YOU ONE!!!!!!

I too have the BME 50 and am putting on the finishing touches. Might be done by sunday. Where did you get the bosch cap. I too have the same setup for ignition, batt etc. did you clamp the ground wire to the plug before going to the bosch cap. Sounds like I might have a problem ahead of me as well. I used 625's on elev and 645's everywhere else

I am using a friends. I called C&H Electronics and they said that I could exchange it for the Boush stlye ignition for $12.95 + shipping since it was a brand new engine. Yes I did ground the shield. The only thing that might have caused my problem besides the spark plug cap was that the original spark plug cap was touching the cowling. This might have been causing a arch were it was touching. Good luck with yours. Joe

rcflyerjoe,
Your plane came out nose with a BME 50 and the battery all the way in the tail? Man I did not want to hear that. I am putting a BME 44 on mine. How did you mount your battery in the tail?
Where did you have your ground wire attached to? Mine is attached to a muffler support bolt. I have not range checked it yet. Did you try using a hose clamp attached directly to the spark plug?
Chris

I removed one of the rudder servos and taped the batt to a balsa stick and shoved it to the back. I stuffed foam to hold it in place then replaced the servo. I used a hose clamp on the spark plug to hold the ground on the ignition in place. The BME44 weighs the same as the BME50. My plane weighed out at 15lbs 7oz. Believe me the weight is not an issue with this combination. Joe

If you mount the engine 7" from the fire wall as specified in the manual, the J&A pitts muffler will clear. I used a Hanger 9 metal mount. I was told by Don's that the Greatplanes mount would also be find.
