GottaBFordTough,

I like the handle!
Anyhow...

What kind of a charger do you use for your monster Li-Po batteries? Ever have any issues with charging them? What is the average charge time for that size battery?

Sorry for picking yoru brain, I am just very curious as to ho wI could get the same kind of flight times from my Blade CP. Right now I average about 8 minutes of fly time on stock batteries with the stock wall wart charger.

Thanks!

John

8 minutes on stock pack is pretty good. He's using a 3s lipo. A lot more power. I am using 3s 1100's with about the same time frame.

I would switch to the 9 tooth motor first. I put a 1250 LiPo on mine wit a 10 tooth, and it suddenly shot up from a low hover. I put the 9 tooth motor on, but havn't retested yet.

How many battery packs did you go thru before you learned to hover?? I'm just curious. I just ran out my 8th pack a little bit ago. I only have a roughly 7ft by 7ft space to fly in the living room(no basement or garage). So far I can manage to hover 1-3 seconds before drifting off and having to set down. With tail in I can pretty much hold it in one place, just keep applying throttle till its pretty much stays in one place, then lifts off. Have not had to replace anything except the blade grips, the rotor blades are starting to show a lil wear tho. Anyway I was curious about the battery packs.

CrashinJ

I hope you don't think i'm full of BS but I flew the hell out of my BCP right out of the box having never flown a (real) heli before. I have a few years experience with RC planes but I chalk this up to hours and hours using realflight G2 and G3. I've wanted a heli for years but had to focu$ on my love for airplanes. At first I spent 90% of the sim time flying planes but once I got into the helicopters I was hooked. Much more challenging than airplanes but also a lot more work with the fingers. Almost stressful. A good stress, but I still look forward to flying airplanes so I can relax a little.

I have crashed my BCP a couple times though. Once from glitchy yo-yo effect and another time because I got a little carried away and completely lost focus which way the bird was flying. I choked. DOH! Humbling but it was a good lesson for only $50 or so in repairs.

If you have a decent computer and enjoy flying, I HIGHLY recommend G3. Not just for practice but also because it's a lot of fun.

I'd say about 20 to 30 charges, and some G2 Simulator time...

Well, it's official - I am a blade owner. It arrived today and I have run through two batteries and no damage yet. I am using Rudd's lessons so I hope the damage will be minimal. I ended up buying another NimH battery and a better charger so I can fly for about 25 minutes before I have to charge. The charger only takes about 45 minutes so I get a nice little break in between batteries.
I know you probably have heard enough newbie stories but I am excited to be back into R/C after about a 15 year break.

I put the a.e.k. on so I could use a t.p.1320 3s lipo for more flying time.T he stock battery gives me to little flight time. The a.e.k. was just to much for mr now.But would love to fly longer.

I just put a 9 tooth motor on mine, but my friend (Greg) has a stock 10 tooth with the heat sinks on both, and a 1500ma LiPo. Seems to work great with the flatbottom blades. He said he likes the flat bottom blades better too... Seems more stable... I agree...

your friend has a 1500 lipo on a stock set?How long has he had that setup,I was told and read in the book that a lipo will burn up the stock motor.Let me know plz.I think its much more stable with the flat bottom blades on.I have the cooling fins on both motors.

i went to a slot car shop and got an 8 tooth pinion gear and put that on my motor cost 99cents. i run one heat sink on the main motor and two on the tail with my 1800 mah 3cell pack. i fly for 20 min straight with no problems. i've probably got around 25 20min flights and still no prob. i was told to run 8 tooth pinion with flat bottom blades and 3cell. and 9 tooth with sym blades. i run flat's still no 3d just flying and stuff. i love my lipo. best addition. ps. dont waste your time with the dd tail it wont hold the lipo.

Curious what you mean by that. I have the DD and love it. And I'm using 3s.

Dennis--thought you were going to sell out? Glad to see you're still "hanging" in there. (pun intended)

Well, im still waitin for my replacement 4 in 1. I put Gregs 4 in 1 on my BCP and ran the antenna away from all other wires and thru a tube attached to the right skid. I fastened the tube to the carbon fiber support, just above the nipple of the skid. That gets is up off the ground, and because the way the ties are on, it makes the tube kinda swoop upward (nice). Test ran on a stool, then hovered and so far it seems fine. Maybe my whole problem was antenna placement, but it was just wrapped around the skid by the factory, or maybe the 4 in 1 was bad. I dunno, cause it acted up once with Gregs unit with the antenna wrapped around the skid. Weird...

I was at the hobby shop. They have an E-Flite Li-Po pack for my blade, but what do you use to charge it? I have a CX Blade charger. would that work?

I'm not used to these new things. My first R/C car was a Sears Roebuck "Lobo II"

You have to use a special charger to charge lipo's. Some are capable of charging all of them, but they're not cheap. Mine was over $80. You can pick up a lipo/lithium specific charger for somewhere around $20-25. My son-in-law has a Triton which is a very good programmable charger (not cheap, but good). Mine is preset to charge at .5 amps. An 1100 lipo takes me 3 hours to charge. But charging slow also means there's no risk of overheating. Also, before you step up to lipo's make sure you read up on the dangers involved in improper charging and especially draining them too low. You can't run down a lipo like you can your nimh. Drawing the voltage too low can cause it to explode, as can overheating and overcharging. That's why most people opt for a good charger to reduce risk. They're safe if handled properly. So learn proper technique before you use it.

The Blade CX has a LiPo Battery, but you will have to adjust the time for the extra capacity. I also have the Triton Charger. Best $130.00 I ever spent. It charges everything, but it is only 12 volts, so you need to have a power supply or a battery to operate it on. I use a 20 amp Astron Regulated Supply I also use for my Ham gear. It's a great charger for the money...

I forgot about the 12v. My Maha charger is 110v. My son-in-law uses a converted pc power supply. I also have a 12v converter from an old cash register I use for my rc car charger. It's pretty easy to make a 12v DC transformer from Radio shack parts for less than 20 bucks. I made one for my foam cutter. I also use it to test my homemade brushless motors with different output voltages so I can see what they'll do with different batteries.

I would say at least 3 or 4 amps should get er done. I would use a regulated supply though.

No, not charge rate. LOL I mean you would need at least a 3 or 4 amp power supply to run the Triton Charger. And Im hopeing that Horizon is going to warrantee it. They have it now. Oh, and I charge my 1250 3S LiPo at 1200ma (1.2amps) max. I perfer 1 amp though...

1.2 amps is 1C which is recommended. I bought the Maha charger with my Wedico semi. It's slow, but it's a good charger. I just saw the Triton for $114. They also had an Esky (I think) programmable variable rate lipo charger for $54
