Zoo,
Ouch, $375 in 2 secounds. My head would be hanging on that one. The bad part, you mentioned in the last loop it just stopped responding, chances are you'll probably never figure out what failed. My guess is that the plane was in a whole lot of tiny little pieces.
After reading this story, my worst crash was only about $80, blades and a fried 4-in-1. I feel fortunate now. But we've all read and know, that this is not a cheap hobby by anymeans.
Take 'er easy,
Dave / Choppersrule

Speaking of money down the tube, my son-in-law bought a new nitro plane about three weeks ago. Hadn't had a chance to fly until I went down yesterday. He is actually a pretty good pilot and flew it about two hours off and on. He apparently was doing some loops and rolls (I was flying my rex so I wasn't watching) and on the last loop it just stopped responding and nosed in from about 50 feet up at approximately 70 mph. $375 just obliterated in about two seconds. He lost the motor too. Like I said, I was flying the rex and it startled me so bad I put it down a little too hard and trashed a set of blades. So his crash even cost me $12, I'll accept the trade off.
Crashcrash--hope that makes you feel better. Like choppersrule said, the key is take it slow. and if you don't have a good sim, RF G3 is down to $169. I know that's more money, but will save you a fortune in the long run. And besides, it's Christmas, get somebody else to pay for it.

That sucks about the crash. I just had my worst crash last weekend. I finally got into doing flips and rolls and was having lots of fun. got a new pair of carbon blades. Went flying the next day and thats the last time i flew. I was coming from the right and was a little low and the heli took a dip, i dont know if it was pilot error or glitch but i gave it throttle and it didnt climb, maybe i didnt give it enough or something. Neways it hit the concrete at like 20 mph, ripped of the landing gear, broke one of the cf blades. Im waiting to just get a new main frame, and landing gear, main gear, pitch controll links, tail boom. Im basically gona move everything to a new body. What cost the most is the cf blades. But hopefully soon ill be flying again. Crashes happen. But you learn.

I had my first real crash last night. I've ran 4 battery packs through it now and am just starting to really leave the ground. I got a little carried away and it slid into the garage door and dinged 1 blade. I can begin to hover OK ...if I can get my left hand to do what I want it to.

Actually, I'm doing OK. I put it up about 3ft and try to hold it in one place. When it gets away from me, I gently set it down and start over. I've gotten some pretty long periods of hover now. The biggest enemy...OBSTRUCTIONS. These things weren't designed to take much impact off an obstruction so I try to hover in an area as big as I can find and I think that's the secret to keeping it in one piece.

crashcrash - I agree with you there. I only have a space that I freed up in my garage that is about 10' x 10'. I was getting a little cocky last night on my last hover and I set it down sliding towards the garage door...smack...one the blades hit. I would be OK with a bigger space.

I've found that the "Battery 1" page at RADD's http://www.dream-models.com/eco/index.html is a good way to get the thing under control.
Don't let it wander at all from the box.. When it does, shut it down, pick it up and move it back.
It's helping my outdoor flopping a lot.
Can almost get a decent hover from the DF4... wind permitting.

No, no Dave.....fire up the heli for the friends and family. Let 'em see this new obsession. Then they'll either get you nicer toys for Xmas next year.....or a nice padded room w/ soothing music.
Get a new canopy and paint it up in a holiday theme. Maybe a reindeer head motif, complete w/ flashing red LED in the nose! How about Deans antenna antlers?

Duane the heli is being pushed to the left by the blast of the tail rotor. It will have to be flown "right wing low" in order to stay in one place.
Flown, not trimmed. Sure, you can add a little trim, or even bias the mechanical setup this way, but you will still have to fly it.
That's what all those little sticks and knobs and buttons and things are for on that black box with the pretty colored lights.
Sorry, no offense, must be the eggnog.

It is all about a good set up, but start with
Radds.
You can improve the set up when your
replacing parts. Also, Go Slow and have fun.

Doc,
Funny you should mention, fire up the heli for the friends and family. Long story short, we alway celebrate X-mas a week in advance with my kids and grandkids. Reason on X-mas day they have to many other place to visit also, by celebrating early, we get to spend the whole day together, not just a few hours.
Anyway,,,, I DO fire up the heli, they are always amazed.
Family is always number one, helis number one plus.
Great thread, enjoy a little fun once and awhile,
Dave / Choppersrule

Hey all.....I reread my one post and I hope it wasn't offensive in any way. After looking at it later, it seems as if it could be taken as some sort of slur. I absolutely did not mean it that way. I was just trying to make a play on Jellyson's reference to having eggnog. I never even considered how the way I phased it is similar to an offensive word.
My sincerest apologies if anyone read it and saw something mean spirited in the intent. I'm really embarassed by this.

crashcrash, i see how you got your handle...
After RADD's. what? Jellyson's Learning Curve:
First, you just crash.
Second, you just crash every time you lift off.
Third, you just crash every battery pack.
Fourth, you just crash every day.
Then, you go buy a TRex, and go back to step First, above.

Well I for one was extremely offended. And I have a box of spare helicopter parts in "perfect" condition I'll sell you if you beleive that. I have been on this particular thread now for over a year, yes I said a year, and believe me most of you guys can take a rib now and then or I wouldn't put up with you. Shoot, most of you believe I can actually fly these things.
Now speaking of flying, to catch up, my son-in-law picked up a new plane today. Only spent $220 on this one. He's at least using the servos from the old one. We'll probably fly Christmas Eve so we'll see how long this one lasts. Oh yeah, he thinks the elevator link popped off the other one and that's why he had no control. He said it was still responding right and left when it nosed in. But without elevator he couldn't pull out of the dive.
