Fella's, i am finishing up the frame up work on my second CG Extra. The first one did not have the protective film on the canopy. Has any one tried using the protective film as a paint mask? I am thinking of trimming the film off of the canopy frame, paint it and then remove the rest of the film. I have never tried any thing like that before and wondered if any of you have.

Interesting question.....I think that it should work fine, as thats the idea of having the protective film on, BUT I would make absolutely sure that the edges are down properly otherwise it will seep under.
Maybe worth masking off just around the edge to make sure.

I use fine line tap instead of regular masking tape, but the biggest question I have is will the paint eat the protective film covering ???? Some of those paints are purdy harsh.

I think what i will do it pull it up a small amount and use the fine line tape. That sounds the safest. You also bring up a good question regarding compatibility. I kept the back of the canopy cut out area, that will be used as a test before spraying the actual canopy frame. All good ideas and i appreciate the help. The paint is on the way so i should be able to spray it next weekend. I will let you know how it turns out.

From: No City,
Brian,
If your remodel is kicking up a lot of dust, wear a mask and if there's lots of dust with sheet rocking, I'm sure you're hanging plastic to keep the dust away from the family.
Take care and we look forward in the future seeing your progress on the a/c!

Hi everyone.
FYI- I'll be on hiatis until I can finish my remodel on my house. It is nearing the end and I want to get it done. I'll keep poking my head in to see how things are going.
Good luck!

Not looking for anything special. Just like seeing how others build. Cyber, I followed your build that you did for the give away. Gray, I've seen every plane you posted on this forum. You guys both do great work. I've learned a lot from this forum. My extra is only my second build, so I'm lookin to learn. I just wish I could fly it better. Too chicken to try stuff on the extra. I'm gonna rebuild my trainer this winter and hopefully make it a little more aerobatic. Take the dihedral out of the wing and increase the aileron chord, cause I have to rebuild 1/2 of it anyway, and hopefully get a little more competent on the sticks in the spring. Maybe I won't be so afraid to crash a plane that's already crashed if you know what I mean.

Here is a picture of mine as of this morning. Hope to have it ready to cover next week, it is getting close. Basically a stock kit but i have implemented a few things learned for the first i built and flew for 10 years. That is still going too and now belongs to my son. I added a 5 ply doubler at the canopy mounts, after a few years one of the light ply mounts broke flush with the wing saddle. The canopy on this one is removable, after years of being in the sun #1 needed some work to repair the inside of the canopy which was sealed up, not fun, not pretty either. I left the lightening hole wood in the ribs on this wing. Yes, it is slightly heavier. On #1 i could feel the wing getting weaker as time passed and i think a lot of that was due to handling it and the ribs breaking or cracking at the lightening holes. Better to have a slightly heavier plane and a strong structure that will last a good long time. Besides, this is only 1/16" wood, not very strong or heavy to begin with. Just my opinion on that. Up front is a faithful old O.S. 1.08 recently back to Hobby Services for a going through. I picked up the fiberglass cowl at a swap meet last year for $5.00, probably the best buy of the swap meet season for me. Not so lucky on the landing gear. It just came in this week from TnT, very nice gear but a little pricey. Being unemployed i have to watch all my pennies and nickels.

Very nice work. I screwed my canopy down also in order to get inside. Only downside I see is when the sun hits it, you will notice that the plastic expands and the bottom edge gets a little wavy. But when it cools down it goes back flat. I put a white towel over the canopy when it is sitting out in the sun at the field to sheild the sun. How thick is the landing gear? Mine is home made. 1/8" aluminum. I suspect 3/16 would be better cause mine bends pretty easy. Not bad for me (new flyer) cause it acts like a shock absorber
. Or maybe the grade of aluminum I used isn't the good stuff. Eventually I'll upgrade to the TNT.

Big Al Since you need to rebuild anyway have you gave any thought to making a whole new wing thats either full symetrical or semi, I have done this for several people to help them get a trainer to fly more like a advanced aerobatic plane, Since its a trainer wing all the ribs are the same and fairly easy to make them. If you don't have a pattern here is what I do, use the scrap out from a kit where the ribs was to get my form lay it out on paper to start with then after I get what I want transfer it over to a piece of 1/16 ply to use as a template to outline the others. Another thing I use is one of the actual ribs from the trainer, if I can get one to come out clean. Mark the one side then flip it over to mark the other. A easy way to get a wing plan paper is to use some masking paper it comes in varies widths plus on a roll so length isn't a issue.

I will see what types is have made up and take some photos this afternoon. I do it about 6 different ways depending on the planes and the mood I'm in when I'm doing it.
