Sounds like you guys have the courtesy thing down at your field. More clubs need to follow suit.
As far as the "What if's?" We can do that all day long with out finding an answer. Things are going to happen. Look at what happened to that poor guy in Tucson a few days ago.
Should we say, "no more flying when the sun is up?"

I'm pleased with the volume of responces! I should clarify....I wish I had the time to learn to hover, but that's not an option right now. I truely respect anyone that can hover a plane in close. And my hat is off to anyone that has the ***** to hover a thousand $ plane. I simply wanted to get a feeling for the opinions of a bigger group of people, than just the local club members. This has helped me to understand a bit more. It's tough to try to "PLEASE" everyone as a CD at one of these events.
As for the future....who knows? I'm sure it will get wilder, and I'm all for change. I fly everything from 1/2A to Big Birds. It all boils down to respect!!! I agree fully with everyone that has voiced that opinion. We all have to learn to respect our fellow fliers. Large or small, fast or slow. As a CD I will try to address this in the pre-flight meetings from now on. I think it will be good to get a general understanding before everything starts.
Thank You very much for all the GREAT input. I will use this as a guide to form some ground rules before my next event. Maybe the next one will be less stressful on me than the last.
Remember........BE NICE TO THE CD!! WE HAVE A JOB TO DO. THANKS.

If the pilot has a clue and uses PCM, thier fail safe will be set for a low idle...therefore a radio hit would make the plane fall down.

Ditto DK,
If we made a study of model airplane accidents over the years, i am quite sure we would find the lions share would be involving low and average skill level pilots, just flying the pattern or landing. If safety is the main concern, maybe we should all work on our hovering and get that skill level up a bit?
Getting to the courtesy between pilots, we have a long standing tradition of calling out our intentions. You don't ener the runway area without yelling "taking off", "touch and go", "deadstick", "On the field".... That comunication is vital to our safety, and to a large degree promotes courtesy. If someone has been hovering the runway for a long time and you want to land, just yell "landing" and give him a few seconds to get out of your way. Don't assume that just because he is having a ton of fun that he is being rude to you, anymore than your needing to land is being rude to him. This is a give and take sport.

I think it should be mandatory that we all wear helmets ....sholder pads....and the hans device...before we fly...that should go over well in the hotter climates....then what are we going to do about heat stroke???

u may as well close it down. its going no where. i cant believe adults act like such babies. no one can get along. sounds like most the old gys in one of my clubs. for some reason they cant stand a younger gy coming in. they fly in circles thats it. and thats fine i respect each one of them. and nothing against older people. some of my best friends are over 65 to 75. and i like them and they like me. i respect them and so they do to me. i started flying just a year ago. i want to learn 3 d. i own 12 planes now. and most are aerobatic planes. including two 1/4 scale. ive learned to knife snap and do lots of fun things. im in the process of learning to hover. and am getting there. and ive got gyros in my lanier edge to help me. i dont care if its cheating. it called learning to do somthing i love. i road race motorcycles. and have won three champion ships. and i treat no other racer any different. they all get along. they all will help u. yea sure u can get ur once in a while snob. dont we all. but airplane people can be so rude and not nice. the other club im in. has many nice gys. we all respect each other. and just cause im 36 and there 66 doesnt mean a thing. they like to watch me fly and learn what im doing. grant it im not a pro. and cant do it all. but u have to start somewhere. just like racing bikes. u dont start as an expert. u work ur way there. im sure all u gys could come up with somthing to make everyone happy. so u can all have fun. i get tired of planes somtimes. and we wonder why countries cant get along. we cant even get along. theres no reason for it. who cares if u heli 3d sport or just fly or if ur 16 or 90 this is supposed to be fun. life is too short for this. if u live to be a hundred. thats nothing to eternity. they cant get along at the fields. they cant get along on the computer. grow up people.quit acting like a bunch of spoiled babies. and i dont care what u think of me. i respect and do unto others as they do unto me. if u want respect from me then i ask for some to. i had a fella run his trainer off the runway right into my big cap. went over my wing and under my van. at full throttle. hes been flying along time. thank god it did not hurt my cap. but he did not even say sorry or anything. just grabbed his plane and walked away. i wont say what i felt like doing. there are no problems only solutions. so think of some. dont just tell someone they cant fly 3d or heli or what ever think of a solution. at our new field this stuff does not go on. we dont put up with babies and rude people. if we can get along and come up with soulutions so can u gys. a friend and i are training a handicap fella. to fly. he has one arm. and hes flying well. now is someone supposed to tell us he cant fly. because its dangerous. what isnt dangerous. ive crashed at over 140 mph. luckily im hear to talk aobout it. any way take how u want to. and to u 3 d gys. i love it. keep doing it and want more of it. one day i will learn. and for one year of flying i hold my own. and im prowd. and i will learn to hover with my gyros and someday when i can do it without them i will. so all u gys get along. were not in elementary school. well ive got to quit. fingers cant go any more. i just cant stand it when people constantly fuss about things. remember there are no problems only solutions. and the solution is not to try and stop someone from doing what they love but to work together. and enjoy this hobby. yes hobby. ur not winning a million bucks. a hobby somthing ment to be enjoyed with ur friends. to get others envoleved in it. young or old or handicaped. dont look down on someone for the way they want to fly. oh im done. u gys do what u want. im glad i dont fly with some of u. keep it up aerobatic gys im for u. just respect people like u would want respected. im sure its in one ear and out the other to some. man i may quit this hobby. and yes im a ama member too. cya bill

ok but where's the time and place??
tell us ...inquiring minds want to know!!!
the time and place is....IMHO...since i pay dues just like the rest of the members...is when i fly.....as long as theres not 3 or more planes in the air....and the earlier comment about deadstick landings....communication...if you holler dead stick i can pull out of a hover and be out of the way long b4 you try and land....there it all goes back to communication....and flying with a spotter should be mandatory for everyone!

When and where? Ask yourself about the guy that brings a high-start out to the field and needs it to drape over part of the runway. Maybe you'll start to find an answer. I obviously can't tell you, because I don't fly at your club.
Why are people defensive over this, anyway? It's nothing a little maturity and respect can't solve.

wgeffon and all,
I couldn't say it better,
RESPECT + COURTESY....
If only we could communicate w/ the people on the highways (way more dangerous than anything that happens at the feild!)

I think many people feel hovering is dangerous because they can't imagine themselves having complete control of a hovering plane. Just like any other maneuver, the better I get at hovering the less dangerous it is.
Certainly less dangeous than high speed passes!

yeah Wayne, What if my aunt had balls, then she'd be my uncle
......(you just have to love southern sayings) You can what if until the cows come home and just have alot of carbon dioxide to show for your efforts.Actually, I was going to replay my post from the last thread about this when there were only one or two comments, but I held off.
You must have copied my post about TOLERANCE, because thats all that needs to be worked on. But you nailed it on the head. I'm gonna stay out of the rest of this thread, because I have enough poop going on at work today to stress me out. LOLOL
Maybe I should have gone to the conflict resolution class here at work yesterday..........

Personally I love it when other pilots are hovering all the time. I know exactly where they are in the sky and don't have to worry about them. As long as you're not doing it right in front of me...I say hover away! At least I know he can control his plane.
I don't think its an issue of hovering or flying fast or low passes or any other flying style. Its just common f&*#*ing sense and respect for other pilots. Two qualities lacking in many people unfortunately.

Except if your radio glitch sends the throttle to full and full up elevator and a little right rudder.........how is that plane just going to "plop" to the ground then. Think about it for a minute. If I'm flying my jet at 200 MPH straight down the runway from right to left and I get a glitch, the jet is most likely going to continue going right to left, in a relatively straight line. It's not suddenly going to make a hard left into the pits. Even if I get a hard left rudder imput, it's hard to turn a jet giong 200 MPH at 90 degrees What is your logic that says my jet will do more damage than your 35%? Anything can happen and someday probably will so I feel like it's crazy to make these kinds of comparisons.
Any model airplane is capable of damaging property and even killing you from any position, attitude, speed, altitude, slow or fast, hovering or high speed low passes. The circumstances do not matter, your respect for the plane and level of preparation and alertness to these chances are what matters.
Let's not try to point the finger at the other guy, instead try and see what you can do to improve the safety at your field.

It seems to have all been said, but here's my $.02. The SAFTEY ISSUE regarding 3D is a wash in my mind. The safety issue and possibility for a glitch exist in ALL aircraft operating from and returning to the runway. Any plane flying over the runway can suffer a hit, glitch or fialure and come zingin' into the pits . That includes low time pilots, ragged out airplanes and the shiny new 3D machine. All can fail.
Personally I pick my air time carefully and generally put my plane up with like minded pilots and people of similar skill level. And I show alot of courtesy.
