I quess I'll have to do a little more research> I don't know anything about A123 batteries although I have seen them mentioned in articles I just skimmed over it thinking they were for larger planes. Just when I thought I was begining to understand a little about Lipos which I thought were the best because they were usually recommended in the plans. I'll check into them. Terry

Hi Terry,
I feel the 123's will become the battery of choice in due time. Only in our usage for about 2.5 years. Size and weight might of prompted the usage for IMAC but they are ok for 40-60 size. They do require a compatable charger
. There is good info at www.hangtimes.com which is NoBs Batteries website or also at FMA. The cost is reasonable and with no fear of fires.
Just noticed another source; www.sincityjets.com

PS: CloudDancer,
Did you order your Super Cub? I note it takes 1010.00 SEK (Kronor) to equal $140.00. Sounds like alot to me!!

But no have not ordered it. I've done my more major pre-season shopping already and was thinking of maybe getting the super cub much later, but since it's discontinued maybe not.
With the exception of the landing gear it's a nice looking arf.

Hi John, I solved the problem-had a discussion with Lightning Fan on another thread about electrics who after giving me these wonderful formulas (seems to be in the know about batteries) he suggested that I check the voltage on the individual batteries. I must be an idiot for not thinking of that but anyway I did and the 11.1v 2200mah battery only produced 70.5 watts and would barely turn over the power 46 motor. The battery is about 2 years old so I quess that solves that problem. The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow so we will see how she performs. Terry

Hi John-we flew the super Cub this past weekend. It was a little breezy so I had someone with a lot more experience with cubs take off, trim it up and land it for me. It took off with between 1/4-1/2 throttle without flaps. We didn't try anything fancey but it did fly very good and stable. It has the E-flight 46 motor which is more than enough power. I don't think I'll be doing any flat spins but I might try a few standard tail spins. We had it on low rate for aileron and elevator. Terry

Congrat's Terry! Very satisfying to see your efforts resulted in a good maiden. I'm always relieved. A little progress on this end, tail feathers, tail wheel and servos installed, wing done. I'm thinking of putting an OS 70 four stroker in her, Always have had better results with OS. We fly off of pavement and it should be aiborn in about 20 ft. Big heli fly in at our field next weekend so no rush to get her done. Will let you know when I do.

I'm using the OS 70 4-stroke. You will deffinately be able to take off in 20 feet on pavement. I would say 10 feet with 3/4 throttle, maybe less with flaps and also depending on CG. With full flaps and 3/4 throttle im off in less than 10 feet on grass. I have the CG a little far back though. about 3.5 inches from leading edge.

Hi Fizzy, Nice to hear back from you. I flew it with 2 -2200 2s batteries and it was a little tail heavy. I got the 3300mah 5s battery in today finally. The extra weight should even out the CG hopefully and give a lot more flying time. I put a quick disconnect plug on the outside which works great and I was able to reach in through the open windows without to much difficulty to get to the batteries. I wrecked my super sportster however. I got to far down wind and trying to concentrate on one other guy flying and another trying to take-off. I lost sight for a sec and went into a spiral and couldn't seem to get it out in time-oh well I've now ordered the Escapade from Tower Hobbies to replace it. Hope you are having good flying weather out there in California. Terry

To all newcomers...
I just ran into a slight snag and error in this Cub. When assembling the push rod tubes someone had a bad hair day or was upset for some reason. There are three tubes and well placed so the left two are for elevator's and the right/center for rudder, quite obvious by where the servos go. Not until I was hooking up the rods to the control horns did I realize the rudder rod was coming out on the left elevator position and would of required a serious bend and bind to get down to the rudder horn. I anticipated some serious surgery But, I walked away and thought it out to a simple fix. Razor saw in hand and cut the tubes at the back of former guide and switched the rods over, Of course this required disasemble of the clevis's, pull the rods out and reassemble. Kinda a long note to advise anyone else to check it out before you proceed. You can not see where the tubes go at the tail end and exit until you poke though the covering. I trust those of you who have contributed to this thread did not have this problem.

Hi John, I didn't have that problem but I did note that the rudder position was close to the elevator horn and would probably scrub at some point if both were deflected at the same time so I simply cut off the end of the rudder horn and it works fine. Glad you got it fixed. When I have a problem such as yours I sit down, relax and tell myself hey this isn't rocket science and so far have been able to come up with a fix. I had a similar problem with the holes where the wing bolts attach. One hole was 4mm off . I was able to enlarge the hole and then insert a plastic straw with the bolt inserted through it and screwed into the fuselage I then packed wood filler around it to make it solid . When it hardened I cut off the straw and now have a solid hole for the bolt. It seems complicated but wasn't. Terry

I"m new too the thread and the Model Tech Supercub.Ihad the same problem as Tapa and had to cut the rudder control horn. The only other problem I had was with the cleveses that came in the kit, they were brittle and the pins broke so I had to go to Dubro. Some builders has had trouble with the supplied tank but mine has worked ok.Than again I only have just a little over an hour on mine.I powered it with a magnum .91 four stroke and for control I'm useing the Airtronics RDS8000 and Futaba s3004 servo's It flew out of the box with no trim changes ,thats a first for me.I've flown the full scale PA-18 150 and it imatates the real one verywell.Full flap landings you fly a steep approach or drag in with power just like the full scale.I can't say enough about the people at Hobby-People Iordered mine friday on line for $219 Monday morning Igot an email saying it was on sale for $169.Icalled to cancel my order but was told the order was already processed. but they would credit $50 to my credit card, thats service.

Glad you got it flying. I also had a lot of hours in the real super cub-it even had the same color scheme. I used to just drop the door and raise the window and cruise along at about 60-65 and it was quite a thrill. I don't fly real ones anymore so it is nice to fly this one. I soloed it for the first time yesterday and made better landings than the field "expert" which he is but it just seemed to come natural to me with the super cub. I didn't really care for the full flap landing in the model since it wants to float. They are really not needed in our field which is wide open but would be a plus in a confined area which required a "short-field landing". I agree about the service at Hobby People.net they ship very fast and have some great deals. They stand behind everything they sell. Terry

I flew my cub for the first time this weekend. Powered it with a Turnigy 42-60 500KV motor. The 5000 mah 5S pack balances the plane very well and I'm getting about 100 watts/lb out of the system. To get around taking the wing off to replace the battery I did not glue the wind screen in, but rather let the top of the wind screen slide between the wing assembly fuse then used two small servo screws on each side at the bottom - works like a charm and I can get my whole hand inside to connect the battery and make any other adjustments.
I replaced the tail wheel with a custom made rod that will accept a larger wheel, but I think I will end up replacing the whole assembly with one from Dubro.

I've almost finished mounting my floats. I need a little more bracing. I may end up taking the gear off the front and making another brace like the back.

Nice job on the floats-since I live on a lake I may have to try that. What size are the floats? By the way I recieved a nice cap with the RC Universe logo on it, some RC Universe decals and a set of playing cards from them. No note attached. Did anyone else get something from them? TAPA

My floats are the Great Planes .40 sized floats. I did a little extra re-inforcing and glassed and painted them so they weigh a good bit more than needed. I am right at the high end for the .40 sized floats so I would recommend getting the .60 sized for this one (if you glass and paint them). I will post some pictures of it in the water hopefully this weekend (weather permitting).

Try Hobbypeople.net. They stock parts for the Model Tech Super Cub. I didn't see a cowl, but finding everything they have on their site is difficult, so you may need to give them a call.

Thank's R/cer. Do let us know when you have it and fitted. Likewise, I wasn't thrilled and also botched mine a little with the cut out for my Os70. Hobby People did have one listed for $34 bucks but I don't see it now. A little steep when the whole plane cost 139 00 on sale.
