Thank you. That gives me some options to look for with my next build. I felt my extra came out really good as far as being straight and true. I even did an excellent job sanding and smoothing out imperfections, but I kinda dropped the ball on the covering and painting. Not bad, but I want the next project to be better. I think I'm gonna build a Goldberg Ultimate providing my family listened to the hints I gave for a Christmas gift.

The Ultimate is also a great flying plane. Not quite the flyer that the Extra but close and a lot of fun to build. After building 3 of them, let me know if you get one, i can share some tips if you would like.
Speaking of Lusterkote, it is ok paint, it takes some getting used to and has to be put on in thin layers with a few minutes to flash off between coats. Funny you mentioned Missle Red, i just this morning put Missle Red on the cowl. A better name for it might be Missle Orange. It is not as red as the Ultracote, but not too bad either, i guess i am just a bit to picky.

Wolf, your LHS quit stocking the Ultra because they quit importing it. Very hard to get the colors you need, even from Horizon if they still have any. The LK I have had problems with, the Ultra has been no trouble as long as I used there under coat.
Al, just for grins go onto the Klass Kote web site and look at what they offer. It's not cheap but it is bullet proof, a two part epoxy like the old K&B paint. I have cleaned KK with acetone and it didn't even dull the finish. When you see the price just know, it will thin 50/50 so it goes a long way. Radio South has matching paint for Ultra but it isn't cheap either and it's just spray cans.
Some special color matches are just easier to get at my auto paint shop but it can be very high dollar.

Hey fella's, just wanted to share some news with you. As of today my CG Extra is ready to fly. Hurray!!! I do have to fit a muffler that is currently on back order at Tower. It will sit now for a while as I don't fly much in the winter unless it is indoors or a nice day i will go out for a flight or two with a small electric plane or heli.

Very nice job indeed, it very nice to see modeling skills like that still exsist in todays ARF world, Congrats and A big thumbs up!!!!!!!
BTW what engine did you go with, i'm sure you have said but I didn't see it. Looks to be a 2 stroke.
Richard.

Thats to bad Gene, I always hate to see the old trusted stand bys go in especially a plane such as the Kaos. They get some age on the airframe and it doesn't take all that much of a impact to really mess things up. I had a forty size I got used from a fellow and flew the daylights out of it untill one day the engine died in a very bad place, the rest was history, But then you could just buy a new kit , not so now days its all plan build and cut your own. Feel lucky to have such a good friend that had one on hand.
Ya know what they say All planes have a expiration date stamped inside someplace, but i'll be darned if I can find it untill its too late *L*
Good Luck with your new build, Question are you going to do a build thread on it by chance?
Richard.

That is a bummer, sorry to hear that. That is the worst part of the hobby, but you are right, they all go sooner or later. We just do the best we can and hope for later. The Kaos is a great airplane. I had a .40 size in the 80's when Bridi was still going strong. Absolutely loved the plane. Sold it in a move,,,, that was a big mistake. Now you got me to thinking about it, i will have to see if i can find a picture of it sometime. (i will post it if you do a build thread)

As old as the plane was it wasn't stressed out in any places. It had been crashed before, more then once but this was the end of the line for it. You can still get the kit from Joes son {I think it's his son} at Blue Jay. I don't think I will do a build thread but there will be a template sheet of every part in the kit. If I do another build thread I will build it to the bones with photos then post it as a build thread then maybe give some detailed photos of how I cover a plane. The crash was my fault, I couldn't see very well, I just had an eye operation and both my eyes were really fuzzy. I took it way up for a stall turn then turned that into a flat spin. As I waas pulling out my header broke off and the muffler went it's own way and the engine flamed out. The wind didn't help but I was OK with it. I just thought I would mention the templates for the Dirty Birdi though. It's been a while sense I flew one but I recall I liked it as well or better then the Kaos. Like I said, been a while!!

Starting to think about the Extra again.
I am amazed at the way Lanier cut my kit. Grey Beard told me the ribs used by Goldberg are 5/32 inch thick. Mine were 1/16th inch balsa. The airfoil of each rib was inconsisant and the ribs don't even approach matching the plans. I honestly wonder if I have ribs from 3 seperate kits in my box.
Anyhow, with the use of a wing jig, and cuting templates for ribs that hold a consistant airfoil from center to wingtip, I will eventually have a good wing.
The ply looks as if it were ripped by hand. They weren't die-cut or lazer cut. They used a really sad and VERY dull something to get me what I have. The parts to the fuse need to be re-cut measured up to the plans so everything will even fit.
I guess this is turning into a "Scratch Build" project.
I used the GP wing jig for an UltraSport wing in my downtime recently, and I have found it works VERY well.
My build has turned into a soap opera for sure!
My question:
Should I start a different thread to fix my wing, and then finish everything up here?

Naw I wouldn't do that, maybe someone else will have the same problems as you are, this would be the correct place to find the answers.
I thought the lainer kits were all laser cut kits, I know the original kits was stamped out and some items sawed. I wonder if you might have got a older kit, you know old stock NIB sort of a deal.
I have built several of these planes and never have I seen the ribs any thicker than 1/16 inch. Most the time where I can I glue in the lightning holes in the ribs that little bit of balsa is not going to make any diff in the weight of the plane, but makes the rib a whole lot stronger.
BTW what happened to your first wing, I thought you said it wound up straight after all ?
To be honest with you I do check my wings as I build, but I don't put alot of worry into them untill (unless there are really off) I get them covered and finished. Then straighten as needed.
A unfinished wing with a 1/2-1 degree twist is nothing to take out with covering.
Its the bows I worry more about than twists.

I will go in-depth. I will have a little photographer helping as the kiddos are on Christmas Vacation!
Regarding the 1st wing, I can't bring myself to trust it. Plus, it bugs me so bad I start losing interest in finishing the airplane. I need to know it is right.

Upon further discussion with GreyBeard, I have more info.
The original Goldberg ribs and sheeting are supposed to be 3/32 inch ribs and 1/16 inch sheeting. This make a WHOLE lot more sence.
I will have the project started soon, I just need to pick up some 3/32 inch rib quality sheeting, graph paper, and hardwood to cut templates.
See you soon! [sm=tongue_smile.gif]

If I HAD to complain about something with this kit, it would be the 1/16 ribs and sheeting. It works out in end but that extra 1/32 makes for easier building and sanding stock, at least from my perspective. I glued the lightening holes in on this one too. On the first one, i took them out and after a few years the wing did loose some integrity.

I had no complaints wth my kit. It came with nice fiberglass parts and the wood was all die cut (not laser) but they fit very good. I thought the wood quality was good also, but I've only built two RC planes. I've built about a dozen or so contol line planes all SIG but I don't think it's as critical to build the control line planes as accurately as a plane that flies free, so I wasn't as picky when I built those. This was my first Goldberg. I liked it equally as well as the SIGs. A comment I have though is this. It seems to me that many people today want the parts to fit dead nuts perfect out of the box. To me some of the challenge is working with the parts to get the desired outcome that you want. That's where your creativity and imagination comes in. That's half the fun IMO.
The only complaint I have with any kit is the cheap hardware that they put in the box. I'd just rather they left it all out and charged less. I pitch most of it.

Brian and I were talking and I will still wait for his templates but if anyone has a real CG Extra kit I would really like to have a copy of all the parts on a sheet of bond paper for templates. I do have a winter project going on the board real soon but I do tend to build more in the summer anyway so I can wait. I was really surprised, I knew Lanier bout out CG but didn't know they made up any of the Extra kits. Live and learn. If I can get the templates I will make up a copy using seetemp so we will always have them.
BRIAN!!! I was framing up a small plane a week or two ago and decided to use wood glue instead of CA. Mistake!!! As the wood glue was setting up/drying I could watch the wood start to warp!!! The kit I'm building is very old and the wood is super dry so that was one factor but I was in shock as to how fast it started to warp. Just an FYI!!

Carlos I had a chance to play with your cowling some today, Although it fits my plane fairly well that not to say it will fit yours.
I'll finish up some filling and it will be ready to ship back to you.
I used some spring clamps to hold it in place, so you should not have any trouble using screws to do the same.
