Dave you sure are busy in the shop. I see Daniel has been busy working with MGM on a reliable esc for his monster fans. Looking forward to seeing all the new items that show up at Jet Power this year.
Please post a video of this edf Hawk, it should perform well with the DS94

190mm is safe. Wouldn't call it nose heavy, but its not neutral either. (though all flying stab and neutral always looks messy to me) You can go back to 200mm, I have flown them at 205mm, not for me, but nothing nasty.

Yes, they are very happy. Sure someone will post from JP if I finish the marathon. Just back from a few days away with family, so even further behind!

Think my Hawk around 190/195 going to re-check this once all back together as got to check any way with re-painting should not make much difference but better to be on the safe side..
Coming together, got both strobes back on and re- bolted on the intakes, just got to re-spray aerials then tank, JC and tube I know its taken a while what with work and weather but well worth it...

Beautiful work there. But I am struggling just to get the stock model finished! It is amazing to me that this big heavy jet has a useful CG range from 190mm to 205mm, only 15mm front to back, not a problem to do it, but it just seems so small, maybe swept wing jets are sensitive.

I have some scratches in my clear canopy. I had taped the canopy for cutting and fitting but when I removed the tape and installed it with glue I got tons of small scratches where the sides touched the edges of the fiberglass frame going into place. I imagine I can buff them out with the plastic polish set I have for automobile detailing...

Use high number grit 2000 - 3000 plenty of water then I use G3/G10 Farecla rubbing compound then 3M fine compound, that will get rid of scratches in canopy. The strobes I made were done the same way and you can see the finish on them and that's after cutting with 2" cutter.

OK, I guess the wet sanding is necessary to remove the scratches, then polish. Thanks.

I flew the Hawk again today and it flew very well.

I moved the CG from 185 back to 198mm and only put 3/4 tank of fuel in so I could land with somewhere near 1/4 tank after a 7 1/2 minute flight and the landing was excellent.

The turns were also very neutral.

Felt like a different plane.

It did take some down trim and even more once the flaps were deployed, but Wow, what a difference.

I must say that with the CG too far forward, there is little to no window to land this thing. With it at 198, Big difference.

Good for you! Glad you got the CG sorted and it is flying well. It also sounds great that you can fly the Hawk for 7 minutes and only burn 1/2 tank.

With a P-120SX I have a timer set for 11 minutes-roll out start time-gear down 10 1/2 approx, I fly the Hawk scale speed, only full power for verticals, I land with 1/4 tank! It will fly 9 1/2 minutes even with the heavy gas pilots.

That is really neat. I have 116 flights on my Electra as of yesterday, those 5 1/2 min flights T/O to touchdown are getting old! I keep reading about telemetry but the only thing I would be interested is audible fuel or battery pack level warnings. Airspeed, altitude, g force, temps, meh. Or do they already have that?

Well finally got the P120SX back in this morning, thought I would have trouble starting what with empty pipes but she fired up straight away as if it had never been taken out!
Getting the decals on....

That looks absolutely awesome Alan! And the lighting system is fantastic, far superior to anything I've seen commercially available!

Looks beautiful Alan. Well worth the effort.

I just returned from your neck of the woods last night and was surprised how nice the weather was most of last week. Saw quite a bit of sun and mild temps(at least in London and Cardiff Bay).

Thanks guys for the comments, was really nice to hear the JC start up again....
going to spray the tail plane next then the wing, when I placed the tail plane on the fuselage for comparison the difference was not funny... So the tail plane definitely needs to be painted. The wing I knew would have to be painted as the lines from fuselage to wing are now out due to the lines on fuselage now being correct.

Marty yes our weather has not been bad, if you had been here a few weeks back we were hitting 29deg C around 88 F in your money I think!

I know a couple of you have expressed interest in the lighting system and as soon as I get the rest of the painting done I will be able to make some sets if folks want to order them etc

How are you guys measuring the CG? To get a resolution down to a given millimeter, you must be using something than having your buddy assist you and lift the wings by your finger!

Also, I am not sure I understand why 15mm will make such a big difference in the flight handling characteristics of this plane. I am still new to jets and would like to learn as much as possible.

I built this balancing 'device' to balance the Hawk though it sure does help if you have a second pair of hands to help you lift the plane on
Each supporting arm has two bearings to ensure free movement..

Hi Guys

I'm currently building a T45 version to be powered by a P140RX. Any thoughts about mass balancing the stabs? Is this a general recommendation or not necessary?

Cheers

Just use two decent servos in the rear (2 x 8911 in mine)

Finger tips are fine for me, every pilot has a difference requirement. I have flown the Hawk with a huge range, just you need to adjust how you land that first time knowing how the elevator feels. The Hawk I flew last week was the most extreme, ending up with 1lb of lead stuck to the tail fairing!

Balanced stabs are always good, but not needed on this aeroplane with quality servos (original thread starter has 8711 and still flying without an adjustment)
