Been there tried that and got the T shirt that says " I tried to use magnets to fix my floppy gear doors but failed"
Agreed that better geometry is a start but from what I can see the fixing point is quite some distance from the hinge line.
Sandor... Your task is
Find me some meaty cylinders to sort this issue out. I will order 20 to start with, and offer these as free upgrades to any of my Viper Jet Customers who are unhappy with their current set up. My cost inc shipping. I will even fit them for those customers that want to get their VJet to me.
Regards Al

To try & solve the gear door problems, I have ordered a couple of Robart 3/8th inch cylinders with 2.5 inch stroke from Tower Hobbies. These give 11lbs pull at 100psi. I have a spare one here & it is possible to mount the door fixing one inch from the hinge line & still fully open & close the door, so giving much more leverage. If that still not enough, I will combine them with the rare earth magnets. If that fails, I will see if Sandor has a better solution. It will probably be a couple of weeks for delivery to Cyprus from the USA. I wiil report my findings later.

I wonder how much the attachment / anchor point( where the ram bolts to the door) cantake ? When I first got my Viper the rams / cylinders were stuck closed I was trying trying to open the door by hand and I pulled the screws through the door and I had to re glue the anchor point back on the door. In fact I used an air pump to open the other door and that got up to 120ish psi before the door opened with a bang! The rams / cylinders still get tight after a few days of non use, but a lot better now! I dont want to "teach anybody to suck eggs"......, but it might be an idea to check the anchor points and "beef" them up for larger rams? Just a thought. Has anyone checked to see if the gear doors are flexing open? Having said that how far are the gear doors opening in flight?

Hi Hangarman. As the door fixing point will be at about one inch further down the door, a new ram fixing point will be fitted. It will be fixed with small screws & nuts plus hysol. In flight the gear doors do not flex, they just hang fully open. The existing gear door cylinder postion when the door is closed is useless & provides little or no closing effect. the fact that the existing door fixing point is virtually on the hinge line, gives little leverage even if the cylinder was positioned better.

Here is the mod I have done to stop the gear doors opening. I used a Robart 165L cylinder, 3/8ths diameter by 2.5 inch stroke. I used a cut down plastic aileron horn which has three mounting holes as the fixture to the door. It is bolted on & also epoxied. The cylinder has a clevis attached. The distance from the clevis pin to the inner edge of the door is one & seven eigths of an inch. The top of the cylinder is mounted on a short extension level with the top edge of the existing cylinder mount. The cylinder is almost vertical to the door when closed.
In a test at 80psi the door on the unmodified side opened with just a touch of a finger. On the modified side, I would have broken the door if I had pushed any harder. This setup gives great mechanical advantage. The operation of the retract sequence is smooth & the cylinder does not interfere with the wheel going up & down.
Sorry about the quality of the photos. I used my phone camera.

Oh.... that's great! Though why you guys are giving away $135.00 for a work done, that don't do the job?[sm=bananahead.gif] And the need to buy new cylinders and repositioned them after all; Not much sense to me. I prefer to scratch my head doing that freaking doors myself than paying to someone that does not know how to do it right.

Sandor you are right. Life is a learning process. And knowledge is not free. But wow.... too many Vipers with the same problem. I think Anton is late in fixing that little issue. He need to address this issue ASAP. Viper is now a $100.00 more and we still need to do a lot mod. And we all know Anton is not the one who assemble this models.
Ah!!! don't misunderstand me, I do like his products. Waiting a bit more to get my new one. For the same reason. Looking for feedback and findings from others owners.

LIVE HINGES
Ok, I had a look at the wings of my VJ and it appears to me that only one side of the flaps and ailerons are glued in and the other side of the surfaces are not glued. This is my first live hinge setup, is this normal???

Hi John
Thought I would show you what I have done as far as the tags to hold the wing in place I have copied the Euro fixing method by using a bolt through the root rib. Very easy to put together have a blind nut epoxied in on the fusalage side no stress on the rootrib blocks as they are touching each other Hope the Pics explain what I am talking about. will upload some more photos of the cockpit later if this works out ok as it is my first post. Also posted a couple of pics of the trailer and Yac and Elan

No, I orderd some red, green and white ones. (along with a lot of other LED types, to see which ones worked best)
After testing some I did see black spots for a while

i tried the jet-1a also on my nice flying hawk , but the doors also always opened.

more news from the landing gear:
we are working now for a few weeks on the new oleo,s for the Viper
we finnaly agreed here what they are and how they should work..
here is a first "prototype"of foam (we dont want to waste a nice block of 7075 do we)
we expect to have some ready in late december.
the problem was the lenght and still keep our unique design intact , i think we got it..

Sandor,
I will place myself in the front of the line when these are ready
I have the ProLynx oleo's on most of my planes, and if these will work as good as all the other I have, you have a winner !

Nice one Sandor.
Send me a pair of what you think is best and I will try them.
Mmmmm I am still dubious how a trailing link gear will work on this jet!
