heh nicostaffi---how do you like the retracting hellcat tailwheel--which one is it---i have the cmp hellcat...looking for a tailwheel. i have the sierra retracts. ed sarkisian

Nicostoffi-Hi I would rebuild the retract bays anyway if I were you.I installed Robart retracts in mine and the space between the false ribs was not big enough,so I cut them out and boy I'm glad I did. The glue they used was not very good and they came out real easy,never would have held up to a rough landing.I then cut down through the spar enough to clear the air valves using a Dremel tool and a spiral cuting bit.You should now have aprox 25mm of space between a main rib and the edge of the cutout in the wing.I used the ribs I cut out as templates, to make new ones out of 3mm plywood,keeping in mind that you have an inner and outer rib.I spaced these new ribs off the main ribs with 10-12mm hardwood blocks cut to fit tightly from upper to lower sheeting then I epoxied to them to the side of the main ribs. To those I epoxied the new ply ribs,and then I cut out ribs out of 10mm hardwood and epoxied those to the side leaving the bottom of those ribs flat to attach the landing gear too. I wish I had taken pictures of the whole process to show you,but I think you will figure it out.These babies are solid and the whole process took about 4 hrs including figuring out what to do and looking around my shop for materials.Good luck and watch your back! Oh by the way what part of Germany are you from? My wife has family in Munich.

heh bossman-I'm Just getting to read these older backlogged threads---great stuff....-I see you're out by chino---great place. heh---i have the zero also, as well as the cmp f6f the zero is my dad's --80 incher wingspan --nice one..

The more and more I get into this Hellcat (and the P-47), the more I am inclined to modify several areas. I never thought about the "hollow" Robart tires being able to support the weight - maybe I will spring for the aluminum hubbed Robarts that you have....
As far as the the Hellcat's supplied paint scheme and markings - I live very close to the Chino, CA "Planes of Fame" museum that has a nice tricolor Hellcat on display. I will more than likely use that as the basis for this Hellcat. Using some old Top Flite Corsair stars and bars with the red outline as a guide, I think I will end up enlarging them to make my own stars and bars that jive with the tricolor paint scheme. I like using the Model Master paints as they are very accurate and actually, dont require a lot of paint to achieve full coverage. As stated before, the entire plane will be covered with PPG 2060 flat clear (its urethane based) to fuel proof the plane(s)....
I am still trying to decide which way to go for the cockpit - doing as much modifying as I am doing, it seems a shame to neglect the cockpit - we'll see....
As a sidenote, I went ahead and ordered the CMP Zero from Chief Aircraft as Jet Hobbies emailed me that they are out of stock of the Zero. This will bring the total CMP ARF's to 4 - the P-47, Hellcat, Zero and my beloved P-26 Peashooter. Its hard to believe - I have been a kit builder since a kid - goes to show you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!!!

Randy, if you plan to use the regular Robart 4" scale wheels, then you might want to consider ordering foam inserts for those tires. Those 4" tires are mushy and don't support very much weight, and if you take a sharp corner, they will roll of the rim.
The factory supplied decals are for the overall glossy sea blue color scheme since the star and bar decals don't have any blue background in them. The white star and bar decals look strange on the bottom of the gray wing. You can barely pick them out.

I made my own tail wheel. Not as nice as Luke's, but it works flawlessly. I posted several pictures earlier. Regarding wing glassing, there are numerous psots about it. Glassing the cat's wings is really simple. I used 1/2oz cloth and deluted epoxy very sparingly. Brush on the epoxy, place the precut cloth on top and use a soft palstic squeechee to press it down with. Do top and bottom separately and you should have a smooth transition between the two sides. After the resin has cured properly (several days, depending on the room temp) I sand, prime and paint. That's it.

When I saw that brown box on the doorstep(within 36-48 hrs of the order), and it said, zolner(I was like a kid on blessed christmas morning..) Navy: especially copy on your link to (#'s 711 - 714 posts) on someone's ref to fiberglassing wings,..(you 'll have to excuse me, as I'm having a hard time tracking some of the info that comes through on r c u.) This is a tremendous bankvault of information. trouble is , I'm up till 0200 trying to keep up with all this info, and 0400 revile's are kickin me in the tailhook. (i've been flying my "6'o'clock" off...lots of hrs this month--no time to build--just reading e-mail rcu ref infor at the hotels on r c u..)

Glad to be of help. I understand the information overload dilemna. There is so much great info here its hard to digest it all, even if the flight schedule permits. I copied a bunch of the tips into a Word file and grouped them by topic. It's a few months old and is focused only on the tips that I planned to use, but if you want a copy I'll be glad to e-mail it to you.

Luke , just got the parts , thanks as usual they look great , shipping was fast ect ect , but funny story . I been selling candy for over 20 years (46years old) my company just purchased two companys , one was Cap Candy , the makers of spin pops from in variuos licensed characters ect ect .
I asked my wife while travleing if i received any hobby stuff , she said no , just work , you know the usual samples ect ect .
WHen I got home my parts from Zolner Models were shipped in a Cap Candy Case orginally containing Fairly Odd Parents spin pops lol , so not only did my parts come in a case that orginally has candy but they come in a case of a company that we just purchased about 5 months ago . So what my wife thought was candy /work was the great parts , now I wonder if I can get all my hobby purchases shipped in candy cases then wify will think I ma just working my butt off

If you decide to make a pilot production run, I'd take a couple as well. My current Hellcat pilot may need to be replaced due to substandard flight performance!

Gosh Luke it ooks like you've got at least 11 pilots without even saying your going to make a run. Hmm 25 more and you would have the fighter group off a Lexington class carrier.

Great build thread. I generally don't even open ARF threads, but continuing to see who was posting here caught my interest. After reading this thread from end to end in the past 24 hours, I ordered the full set of scale goodies from Luke's site and will order the pilot if he decides to make them. Actually I'll get two since I'm putting his cockpit kit in a 1/8 TF Corsair as well. I don't know what Hellcat these bits will end up going in (probably a build from BT plans) but my experience with Luke's stuff is that you should get it while you can and worry about what to do with it later. Thanks to all for the inspiration!

SMUGator, hate to tell you but Luke made a killer Corsair cockpit kit as well. Maybe if you say please he will do one of those for you.
Luke sorry if I created more work for you but if you are going to have to make one anyway thought he might as well get the right one. My friend Doug has couple of his Corsair cockpits and they are just as good if not better than the Hellcat ones. Hope all is well I recieved your stuff Luke and thankyou very much now I have some backups. Tomorrow will be my maiden on the Hellcat and will let you all know how it goes.

Heh, ref to e-mails, ...there's an issue here , where every time there's an rc univ "post" a que comes to my aol mail account automatically, linking me to the recent "post" ..I'm drowning in e-mails...how do I "disable" that mail-reminder rcu function--it's like a runaway autopilot...as I have > 800 e-mails in a few days.
