Beware of using plastic models as scale reference. Whilst many have improved their accuracy dramatically over the years some of the older molds, which non-plastic modellers may not be familiar with judging, are often far less dimensionally accurate. In particular, the wing folds are often simplified and therefore not based on an real mechanism designed to hold the wing together in flight.

That's not to say it isn't a good starting point for your research but be aware of the limitations in trusting a plastic model.

On the other hand, there are some excellent reference materials out there intended for the super detailing plastic modeller. Osprey books come to mind. That may be a good starting point for wing fold references.

Good luck.

BFD04,

check out this post in the RCScalebuilder Forum... it is for a Skyshark TBM, but the wing fold is really cool!
Post is about halfway down, and continues throughout the thread.

It does just fine with 3.5" - 4" wheels.

WOW, I bought this and 2 other online models a while back and thought I would see what was out there on it. Found this thread and started at page one. Talk about a lot of reading! I have learned so much and some info that might be too late. Like the cockpit kit and other items that look like they are no longer around.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to all those that added to this thread. Thanks to this great info all my planes will look and fly better. Jon

Bob Holmans Brian Taylor plan is very good and the same size. The CMP wing needs to be shortened to be closer to scale.

Hello,
I finished the CMP Hellcat long time ago, but by personal and healthy problems will stop the maiden.
Last Sunday, 19.08.07, the maiden was suddenly done.
I must say this bird is a good looking and near scale flaying " little " warbird.
Weight 5,5 kg ( ca.12,2 lbs ), powered by an Laser 120 with Graupner 15x8 prop, robart pneum.retract, mech.tailwheel retract and the C.G. at the point which is given by manual instructions.

Full speed is a little more as scale and low speed very good handling.Full flaps will given a little deep trim at the rudder.
Only one thing happens, by landing the retracts don't come out, so I must sliding on the grass.
Nothing gets default.

Greetings
Klaus

Next will be the maiden of the KMP P 38

I now have two Hellcats (CMPro 'copies') awaiting assembly now. Unfortunately I have more planes to fix than I either have to fly or build so, they are on the back burner.

What servos are most of you running, in particular the Hitec models? I'm trying to select a cost effective servo to use and the HS-475s appear to be the way to go. Ideally HS-645MG would be a going in but the local pricing would make them worth more than the plane itself (isn't that always the case).

HS-425 would be more than strong enough for this plane. Warbirds don't really put that much stress on a servo.
I am sure others will dissagree especially when it comes to servos but I have been using JR-537 standard ball bearing servos for over 2 years now in this plane and would not change. Well over 75 flights on the first one I built and now about 15 flights on the new plane using the same servos.

I normally use HS-422 with 4.8V packs but am not confident this would suit the Hellcat with a 120FS up front. My cautious estimate is something around 5KG at 4.8V but, I'd like to stick with Hitec as 'it's the devil I know'.

I have HS 425s in mine and they work fine. I have about 10 flights on mine and it flys great.

nicostoffi;
Be aware when you are going to maiden your P-38. This is really, and I emphasize "really" a bad airplane design. We had three of those in our club and lost them all but the last one. That one is still alive, simply because its owner saw ehat happened to the other two. Let me tell you one thing: If you lose an engine in flight, you are done, period. Also when you trim the airplane to make it fly level the elevator will end up in a fifteen degee down position, which looks very odd. This is due to a bad wing incidence in the design of the plane. Overall the plane is too heavy for its size. Too much of a wing loading. But anyway, good luck. Didn't want to scare you, just pre-warn you.

Hello,
I've heard about this problems.
I think the bad wing incidence are changed by the newer versions.
High weight is the bigger problem, I think.
My weights ca. 7,5 kg ( 16,5 lbs ) with two ASP 80 4-stroke.

I will give report, after maiden - so or so

Greetings
Klaus

For those of you who have an OS 120 installed in their hellcat, what 2 blade prop did you find that works the best for you? I have a newly rebuilt pre-surpass (the original FS 120) installed and altho I have a graupner 14x7 3 blade on it, I would like to see what this plane flies like with a 2 blade prop as well. I 'hope' to do the maiden flight this weekend.
Thank you,
John

[img][/img]Well, Im pretty much finished with mine. Ive made 2 flights with it. After the first flight in which I almost didnt get the plane back down due to being tail heavy( I had it cg'd at 127 mm as everyone said- not good for me), I added about 7 or 8 oz of weight to the firewall and that solved my problem. Here is a pic of the finished product:[img][/img]

Very nice John! I've forgotten, what's your motor/prop combination and how does it work?

Never mind, I just scrolled up and found the very info I requested...[&:]

I have a Saito 1.20, and I also used the graupner 14X7. I now have a APC 15X8 and it performs a bit better. The three blade looks and sounds nice, but the two blade has more speed and thrust.
