Brad,
Ella looks gorgeous.. and she has her own wings!! My wings don't look so good. After spending two months on an RV vacation mainly dodging hailstones in Texas. I came back to find I have a warp in the wing at the location of the flaps. The trailing edges of the wing at the flaps have bowed up in the middle giving a slight reflex to the wing at that point. One I could live with but the other is bowed up about 3/16". And I was hoping to fiberglass this thing this week! So to all of you on this thread.. any ideas. As I see it here are my options
1. Forget it.. trim it out... "There are enormous forces at work" to quote a clubmember.
2. Try to take out the warp..any ideas other than clamps and water?
3. Cut the warped section out and replace.. along with a lot of sanding and filling.
4. Start over!!!
5.????
Anybody any Ideas.... people who suggest option 4 will be removed from my good guys book!!
Speaking of good guys.. Nudger.. great job on the door.... now it all fits why not make the canopy powered?..Lot of work but a great Wow factor!!
Well I need a drink now... and things were just coming along nicely.. Let me know if Y'All (got that in Texas..) have any ideas.
Cheers
len
PS. Yes it's probably my fault i must have put down pressure on the trailing edges when i joined the wing sections!</p>

cut an X accross the wing with a number 11 blade, twist the wing to the correct amount then go a little more. Clamp and leave it a week. If all good patch the cuts and then glass.

Len, you say you are ready for glassing. Does this mean you have already lined the flap well? Has this warped as well?
One thing you could try is glass the center section with 2oz cloth out to the end of the flap or near to as mine ended up and make sure you glass the rear 'flap lip'. Lay the wing flat, cover your fresh glass with some food wrap and put some weight on it to flatten it out and let dry. 3/16th doesnt sound like a lot but you will notice and know it is there.
Let us know how you go.
Cheers,
Brad

Here he is so far Kel.
Like I said he is a mess at the moment. He is /will be made up from an Officer and Gentlemen pilot being the legs and arms, a Chinese plastic head and shoulders from a sports pilot and leather helmet and goggles from a B&D (I think) kit pilot. (I'LL double check on the last bit)
I have cut the hair off the head (it was Elvis style) so the rubber leather helmet fits better and will need to shape the replacement with foam. The torso will be final shaped out of pink foam. The white foam is a prototype body. I have tried to make some MK8 RAF goggles with aluminium can material with little success so have to rethink that. I am on the look out for the right cloth to make his flying uniform that will cover his legs as well. I may replace the legs with wire and pink foam. He will have a Mae West, parrachute and harness.
My aim is to have him fill out the cockpit to the (my) right proportions and take on a life like pose both on the ground and in the air.

Hi I B.
I sent you a PM [ private message ] on RCU. My phone number is contained within.
Call me, and I can help you fix your problem. Note, the plane above where it got hit on 72 mghz, and then the repair, and then the change to 2.4 radio.
This will be a super easy fix, especially if you have not laid in your 1/64 ply into the flap-well.
Put some pictures up, so we can see exactly what more has occured, especially sighting straight down the trailing edge, and place your finger or some tape at the point of most deflection.

Mate concerning your top canopy rail,, it looks like it isa slotted square tube with a lip so what ever slides inside can not come out is that correct?
Mine has a totally open top with no lip and I was wondering why it was like this. I will have to screw down a keeper plate along it's length to secure the rear of the canopy. What are your side rails like? are they slotted as well? Mine are not. They are the same as the top rail.
Cheers,
Brad
Mate, I have checked your pictures again and yes indeed your rails are what I would have expected canopy rails to be like. Looks like I dipped out.

Maybe my conversion kit is from an earlier run. Maybe Leo will let me know?

Brad,
Nudge is doing something totally different than I do. He must have cut all the rails out of my fiberglass conversion piece. Look at my instructions to see how I make a (manual) movable canopy. I work with a spring steel wire around the front edge that locks into 2 holes on each side. The top center rail is just cosmetic to look like the channel on the real airplane. If I didn't put it in then people would have complained that it wasn't there, and now that it is in place they will ask "What is that for?" I can't win.
These sliding canopy rails that are out now did not exist 7 years ago when I started making these bubble canopy conversion kits. I have some now that I picked up from Dynamic Balsa. I'll have to see how they look and perform. Maybe someday I will convert the Spitfire conversion kit over to a sliding rail, but not yet.

Hi Brad
Leo is right. To get my powered hood to work properly I had no option but to cut all three channels out and replace them with the correct profile. The brass K&S tubes had the slot cut in them by a dremel drill bolted down to a piece of ply,a hardwood rail to act as a fence guide , and the brass tube fed into the cutting wheel several times to cut the slot.Hope this makes sense.
As for the pilot he could be made out of resin, may be on the heavy side but would be easy to detail. So i am going to have a shot at him,Ive been looking for 2" years and found nothing as close.
cheers Nudge

Hey Guys, I was looking through my pics and came a cross one of a Polish Pilot leaping from a Spitfire and His gear is very simular to the Aces of Iron "Chuck" bust. I believe I will just change a few colors around and that will be "scale" enough for mine.
May you have good luck on your quest. LOL Yea I'm taking the easy way out.
BTW What would the colors be??

Fixing the two front points is all you need. If done right the canopy will bump the front windscreen at the top and that holds the back down. I put a very small plywood tab at the top of mine on the front windscreen to ensure that the hold down effect was always present. It has worked fine for 7 years.
I am not saying I am going to the new rails. I am just saying I have some and I am looking at them. I will probably try them on a Model "C" Mustang I am working on and see if I like them or not.

dremel have a routing tool that clamps to a bench, you can safely and easily cut slots using a cut off wheel in the dremel tool. That is how I made the channels for my P47.
